Did you know that in 1767 Fray Junipero Serra was sent to Loreto, Baja California by the Spanish Inspector General, Jose de Galvez, as the President of the Baja California Missions? Fray Palou and Fray Crespí were also assigned to these missions. It was at La Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó (the first Jesuit mission founded in Baja California in 1697 and the beginning of the El Camino Real). For the move into Alta California, Serra was in the company of Gaspar de Portolá, the military Governor of California. Blessed Junípero Serra

will be canonized on September 23, 2015 during a Mass in Washington, DC.

Reflecting on God’s WordOften we are unable to identify the truth in our lives. Is our passion love or lust? Is our financial security greed or wise preparation? Is the raising of our children good discipline or carving them into our own image and likeness? Is our religiosity superstition or faithfulness to the tradition? Do our dreams nurture the Kingdom of God or the Tower of Babel? In other words, is it from God or is it from the Other Side? So we look about us, and because our neighbors’ lives seem little different from our own, we put into any self-help harbor that seems able to shelter us from aimless drifting.Most of us, I suspect, wonder if there is anyone who knows the deepest truths, whether they be about life or about our world or even about ourselves. So we find ourselves gathering about Jesus, though even then some may do so half-heartedly—at times trusting that he will have some sort of answer and at other times wondering if he indeed does, yet not knowing where else to go. And so we gather, like sheep around a shepherd, simply because every other voice has been heard and found wanting.

When Catholicism encounters a culture, it tends to approach the culture with a measure of respect for its key customs, especially those touching family life. Around the world, these long established customs are often received into the liturgy, sometimes with a new level of interpretation. From Old Mexico, the custom of the lasso (“cord”) has migrated across borders, and is now firmly established in the marriage liturgy of Spanish speaking Catholics in the United States. It’s a large cord, sometimes resembling rosary beads, looped around the necks of the newlyweds in a figure eight shape. It is a great honor for a person, normally a godparent or close relative, to place the lasso around the shoulders of the couple, groom first. The lasso, a symbol of profound unity, remains in place throughout the liturgy until removed, usually by the priest. The bride keeps the lasso as a memento of the day, a sign of her ties of love to her husband in heart and home. The tender ministry of the godparent in this ceremony clearly links this sacrament of vocation with baptism. It’s not unusual to see the lasso made of fragrant orange blossoms, harking back to very ancient pre Christian rituals seeking the blessings of fertility and happiness.

IV. DECLINE IN THE QUALITY OF HUMAN LIFE AND THE BREAKDOWN OF SOCIETY43. Human beings too are creatures of this world, enjoying a right to life and happiness, and endowed with unique dignity. So we cannot fail to consider the effects on people’s lives of environmental deterioration, current models of development and the throwaway culture.44. Nowadays, for example, we are conscious of the disproportionate and unruly growth of many cities, which have become unhealthy to live in, not only because of pollution caused by toxic emissions but also as a result of urban chaos, poor transportation, and visual pollution and noise. Many cities are huge, inefficient structures, excessively wasteful of energy and water. Neighbourhoods, even those recently built, are congested, chaotic and lacking in sufficient green space. We were not meant to be inundated by cement, asphalt, glass and metal, and deprived of physical contact with nature.45. In some places, rural and urban alike, the privatization of certain spaces has restricted people’s access to places of particular beauty. In others, “ecological” neighbourhoods have been created which are closed to outsiders in order to ensure an artificial tranquillity. Frequently, we find beautiful and carefully manicured green spaces in so-called “safer” areas of cities, but not in the more hidden areas where the disposable of society live.46. The social dimensions of global change include the effects of technological innovations on employment, social exclusion, an inequitable distribution and consumption of energy and other services, social breakdown, increased violence and a rise in new forms of social aggression, drug trafficking, growing drug use by young people, and the loss of identity. These are signs that the growth of the past two centuries has not always led to an integral development and an improvement in the quality of life. Some of these signs are also symptomatic of real social decline, the silent rupture of the bonds of integration and social cohesion.
