Fr. Mass' Column 6-19-16 > Happy Fathers’ Day to all the fathers of the parish. Like Mothers’ Day, this day is a secular holiday that can give us pause to reflect in faith on the significance of father-hood. Being a father, indeed being a parent, is sharing in the creativity of God Him-self. It is God who gives life to all things and sustains that life in His love. Fathers are the cooperators in this project and the “instruments” God relies on to create life and share love. When Jesus teaches us to call God our “Father”, He not only reveals to us something about God, He also challenges all “earthly” fathers to love selflessly and generously. More than simply being responsible for the physical well being of their children, fathers are also responsible for bearing God’s providential, unconditional love to them. They share in the very fatherhood of God Himself. We honor all our fathers today and pledge them our support and prayers. > Fathers’’ Day Spiritual Bouquet cards are still available in the vestibule. You can en-roll your father, living or deceased, in a year-long “novena” of monthly masses here at St. Louis de Montfort. Fill in the information on the outside envelope, insert an of-fering and place the envelope in the collection basket, either today or next weekend. There is a Fathers’ Day card with another envelope inside the outer envelope that can be given to a living father. >We will have our next town hall meeting on Monday evening, June 20, at 7:00 PM in the church. This will be my last town hall meeting with you before my time here at St. Louis de Montfort comes to an end. We will review all that we have accomplished in our first six months in the Archdiocesan TURN AROUND program. We will introduce our new principal, our new Parish Music Director, and our new Coordinator of Religious Education at this meeting. > There will be a second collection next weekend for “Peter’s Pence”. This collection goes to support the work of Pope Francis throughout the world. Please be generous. > Beginning July 1, there will be two changes in our Sunday offering programs. For those who use envelopes, there is a new company providing them. You should have already received a mailing with envelopes for two months instead of one month. Your envelope number remains the same. If you have not received your envelopes, please call the parish office [708-599-5300]. For those who use “E-giving”, we are switching over to “Give Central”, effective July 1. There is information in this week’s bulletin on how to register for Give Central. Current users of “E-giving” will also receive an email with a link to Give Central and instructions for registering with them. Those who are currently using envelopes and would like to try electronic contributing can follow the instructions in today’s bulletin. If you have any difficulty with the process, you can call the parish office for assistance.

Message of the Week – The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 9:18-24

In the Gospel reading for the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we hear Jesus pose a question to his disciples: “Who do you say that I am?” In responding to their answer, Jesus defines the essence of Christian discipleship. One of the fundamental questions that each of the New Testament Gospel writ-ers address is the question of discipleship: what does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? In the Gospel of John, for example, disciples are defined as those who bring others to Christ. The story of the Samaritan woman at the well (Jn 4:4-42) is a prime example of Johannine discipleship. In today’s Gospel reading from Luke, discipleship is also clearly defined. Anyone who wants to be called a disci-ple of Jesus “must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow” him. Following Mark, Luke sets up the question of discipleship within the larger narra-tive context of Jesus’ first Passion prediction and the question of Jesus’ messian-ic identity. Jesus initially asks his disciples, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” Notice that the crowds rightly perceive Jesus as some sort of prophet, similar to Elijah and John the Baptist. But Jesus-as-prophet is only one aspect of his mes-sianic identity. Jesus then asks the disciples: “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answers for the others, “The Christ of God”—God’s Anointed One. Scholars have long debated why Jesus “rebuked” Peter and the other disciples for Peter’s cor-rect answer. Many conclude the answer lies in what Jesus says next: the first of three Passion predictions. “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.” The problem with Peter’s response was with how Peter and the other disciples likely defined the Jewish messiahship. Jesus saw suffering at the heart of his identity as Christ—an aspect of God’s anointed One that the disciples and the crowds had not considered and would have probably rejected, despite (as heard in the first reading from Zechariah) Israel’s prophesies. What probably startled and certainly challenged the disciples was Jesus’ insist-ence that his followers must likewise anticipate suffering: “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” For Luke, discipleship was not a call to martyrdom; it was a call to orient the daily sufferings in life, in whatever form they take— anxiety, fear, doubt, an-ger, sadness—through the prism of the cross of Christ: self-sacrifice and abso-lute dependence upon God Question of the Week: What challenges you most in Luke’s definition of discipleship?
