Fr. Stan’s Utterances Once again, we come to the familiar gospel passage of Martha and Mary with Jesus from the Gospel of Luke. We heard it many times in our lives, but what does it really mean spiritually for us today in our lives? First, let us unpack this gospel. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life as he mentions in the Gospel of John. Therefore, it is certain that the only one thing that is needed for a meaningful and spiritual life is to always stay close to Jesus at all time possible. “Jesus, I Trust in You” as it is entitled on the Divine Mercy Image of St. Faustina Kowalska. Do we trust in Jesus everyday? Discipleship with Christ is the only thing needed. To be a disciple means that we need to be disciplined; focused on Christ. Have you ever looked at the deep-

er meaning of words? This is called Etymology. For example, discipline and disciple clearly have something in common. Did you know that the etymology of the word discipline comes from the word disciple? From Latin “disciplina” means teach-ing and learning, and from the word “discipulus.” We get the meaning of disciple. Therefore, our task here on earth is to make a disciplined choice to shape our lives accordingly as disciples; meaning, to keep Christ first always in everything we do, to live from His love and for His love. Jesus doesn't congratulate Mary because she won the lottery or is climbing the world of career, success and power. Mary chooses to submit to the Lord, to be by His holy feet to learn more from the Lord how to inherit eternal life! Martha, on the other hand, has a divided heart of daily work and prayer. She loves Jesus, but she still depends on her own strength to earn His love in return. She hasn't learned that what matters is not so much what we can do for Jesus as what our Lord has done and wants to do for us. Jesus kindly teaches her in this encounter that the greatest thing she can do for him, the one needed thing, is to let him rule completely over her heart, to take her place at his feet and listen to His words. Now, let us look deeper with the eyes of Jesus. Obviously, he loved both Martha and Mary. The at-mosphere is casual, friendly, almost like a typical party setting in our times. Martha is doing all the work, and Mary is just sitting at Christ's feet listening to him converse with the Apostles. It's understandable that Martha would get perturbed. Feeding all those people is no small task, and she could have used her sister's help. So she tries to get Jesus to tell Mary to lend a hand, but Jesus doesn't. He actually commends Mary and reproves Martha. Why? Christ was glad to be served, but he was even gladder to be loved. He yearns for our love! At the last judgment, He will be less interested in our résumé of achievements (Martha probably had a great résumé) and more in the love with which we achieved them with His help of course. He was happy that Mary wanted to listen, sit and spend time with Him. Martha, on the other hand, seems to be paying attention to Christ by serving him with physical needs; like He is hun-gry and we need to feed Him now. However, Martha was thinking more of herself than of Him. The truth is, Jesus comes to feed us with His words and through Holy Eucharist. As Jesus mentions in Holy Scripture, when he re-bukes Satan in the desert, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on the word of God.” This is why Martha was upset. If she had been trying to please Christ, she would have been glad to do the extra work while her sister enjoyed Christ's conversation. But Martha has become so preoccupied with getting everything done just right that she has forgotten why it's worth doing it in the first place. So when she complains, Jesus seizes the opportunity to remind her that wanting to be in control of everything can sometimes get in the way of what matters most: loving Him. So, how do we apply this gospel into our everyday lives today? Everyday we are faced with the choice to be more like Martha or more like Mary. We can make our own achievements our highest priority, like Martha, or we can make knowing, loving, and living Christ our highest priority. This morning, we have all chosen to come and listen to the Lord and eat His body. What will we choose tomorrow morning? Tuesday? It isn't hard. It's a matter of spending ten minutes with Jesus before getting distracted with daily activities and watch-ing sports. It could be ten minutes of reading and reflecting on a passage from the Bible or a paragraph from a Catholic book. We all have bibles, but do we spend the time reading the holy word of God that He may talk to our hearts and tells us what His will is for us? We become what we read! It could also be praying a decade or the entire rosary before we go to bed. We need to spend more time with Mary everyday because as St. John Paul II the Great said, “It is through Mary that we go to Jesus, and through Jesus to the Father and Holy Spirit.” Jesus wants us to choose the better part, to depend more on Him than ourselves, so that we may do His will and not our will be done. Today, let's promise that we will. “Ora et Labora” as the Benedictine Rule of St Benedict states us to do everyday, which means, pray and work at the same time. Not one over the other, but togeth-er as body and soul praising God! I would like to take this time to thank all of our parishioners for your outpouring of kindness and acceptance. I would like to thank the Knights of Columbus for all their work they are doing for the parish and I am very grateful they are helping our great parish! Thank you so very much for your kindness and warm words. I cannot express how much all of you mean to me as I keep you in my prayers. Please invite somebody who has left our parish or has stopped coming to church to kindly come again so we may be one spiritual and large family worshipping God together as we all journey closer towards Heaven and eternal life with the Holy Trinity. St Louis de Montfort, pray for us! Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us! Have a terrific week everybody and enjoy life!
