PASTOR’S CORNER Happy Easter everyone! Our time of prayer, penance, and offerings for the poor has come to an end. Now we rejoice that the Paschal Lamb, who was slain to overcome our sins and death, has truly risen and is alive among us. We are a blessed people and alleluia is our song, especially in this Easter season. We can sing and dance, hug, and shout for joy because Jesus is truly risen from the dead! This belief unites us as a chosen people, purchased at a great price and yet dedicated to live out Gospel truths. We can use our celebrations as a springboard to greater service and works of charity to many in our church and local community. Thanks to all who’s hard work made for beautiful liturgies this past week. Thanks, too. for the offerings for the Rice Bowl collection and for Our Holy Father’s collection. Lastly, thank you for sharing your time, talent, and treasure with our St. Joseph Church parish family. Enjoy today’s feasting and share God’s blessings with all our brothers and sisters in the Lord. Happy Easter!

Fr. Mike Garvey

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT: 50 DAYS OF JOY & GRATITUDE Pope Francis reminds us in The Joy of the Gospel, “Christ’s resurrection is not an event of the past”. We are reminded this Easter Sunday of the ever-living joy the resurrection brings. Often this joy gets lost in daily life and struggle. We are called to reclaim the joy of the resurrection and to be grateful for all God has done in our lives. We then can respond more authentically with our time, talent, and treasure. How can I grow in joy and gratitude this Easter season?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Our tradition has a way of honoring age-old customs, and is patient with how practices unfold in different places. The name of today’s feast illustrates this well. English is a Germanic language, and our word “Easter,” or German “Oester,” points back to the pagan goddess Eoestre, the star of the vernal equinox feast. The Greek title “Pasch” reaches back in a more helpful manner to the Hebrew “Pesach,” or “Passover.” “Paschal Triduum” may be slow to replace “Easter” in our vocabulary, but it is clearer about the mystery we celebrate today, the culmination of three days laden with mystery and meaning. You can hear the older term, and the resistance to English influence, in the Irish “Casca” and Scottish “Pask.” Romance languages stay close to the deep paschal tradition, with the French “Pâques,” Spanish “Pascua” and Italian “Pasqua.” Memories of our pagan past with “Oester” will not soon fade away: even Japanese Christians are under her spell, for today’s feast is called “ I-suta.” Swahili, a young language, takes the more traditional route with “Pasaka.” Each language yields a rich insight into the feast. Spanish includes a sense that today is a “big Sunday” by adding the designation “Pascua” to the greatest feasts, such as “Pascua de la Natividad” (Christmas). Once Christ is risen, every step of life’s journey is illuminated by the light of the Pasch!

BISHOP’S APPEAL FOR CATHOLIC CHARITIES AND CHURCH THANK YOU to all who made a commitment to the 2015 Bishop’s Appeal. To date 85 households have collectively committed $23,011.20. Parish Council meetings are usually held the third Wednesday of each month (September-May) at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. Ask yourself, “What gifts do you possess which will enhance the work of Pastoral Council?”. If you have an interest in serving your parish in this manner, please fill out a nomination card inserted in last weekend’s bulletin or available in the Narthex and place it in the Narthex collection box or contact the Parish Office by April 13.

WHY THE CHURCH ALWAYS NEEDS MONEY

Every need is an unfailing sign of life and growth. Body, mind, and soul have their needs and they must be met continually. A ministry that is constantly in need of funds is alive and growing and going somewhere. A dead ministry has no need and will not bother you.

THIRD ANNUAL PSR BAKE SALE The 6th & 7th grade students of PSR are sponsoring a Bake Sale to benefit the poor of the world on Sunday, April 12, after each of the Masses. Donations of baked goods

are needed (simply bring to their table in the hallway before Mass). Proceeds will be divided equally between St. Joseph Cares, Appalachian Experience, Catholic Charities, and Catholic Relief Services. Your support is appreciated.

TOTALLY CATHOLIC FUNDRAISING It is our privilege to offer you an opportunity to purchase beautiful imported hand-made Italian, Czech and Mexican rosaries, and a large variety of Catholic medals, crucifixes, necklaces, and bracelets. An assortment of First Communion, Confirmation and RCIA gift items are included. Please come past our display after Masses April 11/12 & 18/19 and see what we are offering. Your purchase of these quality items supports our parish youth activities and programs. Thank you for your support!

FIRST COMMUNION RETREAT The First Communion Retreat is on Saturday, April 18, 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. beginning in Hughes Hall. Please bring a drink or snack to share. If you have any questions, please contact Peg Haney at 330-274-2268 or [email protected]. First Communion will take place on Sunday, May 3, at the 11:15 a.m. Mass.
