STANDING BEFORE THE CRIB

Throughout the history of salvation, God’s words came through messengers, human and angelic; but in the fullness of time God said, “Jesus” and God’s word became flesh, “pitching his tent” among us. Standing before the crib I see Jesus. Many of us have our own nativity sets con-taining the crib of little Jesus and together with our children, we watch and ob-serve this annually. Present in our church this Christmas, I see the child Jesus. In him I see God who has lavished his generosity upon me; but when I look at my-self, I am ashamed to see a “kindergartner” in an adult body. In him, I see a God who humbled himself to my human level. But I have been like a virtual empty vessel that rattles noisily when it contains a coin. I see Mary. She is beautiful because the goodness of her heart. Beauty without goodness is worse than wine that intoxicates the holder and the beholder. I see St. Joseph. He is silent even when Mary is near. This silence is not the absence of sound but of self. Each had surrendered themselves to God in the manger. Our world regards silence as a deficiency. Therefore some media houses keep us awake even on Christmas Eve, keep us awake until dawn playing “Silent Night”. I survey the crib. I see what we regard as essential for modern civilization. There is no door nor a window (which we modern day folks keep shut even during day-time). There is no watchdog that welcomes guests entering a modern house by barking at them. Mary is not wearing slacks, which is not slack enough these days. St. Joseph is not smoking a cigarette, while some of us consume packets a day, as if they contained all the vitamins necessary. And yet, though civilized things are absent from the crib, we have, here the first civilized persons in the world: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. After all, what use are civilized thing without civilized individuals? Many civilizations before ours have been destroyed, not by enemies from outside, but by people inside. I hear Mary telling Joseph, “I hear people gossip about us having a baby without living together as husband and wife.” Joseph says, “Don’t worry, Mary. Worry never accomplishes anything except wrinkles, which gives another thing to worry about. Leave gossip alone, those who gossip are caught in their own mouth-trap.” Mary says, “God could have given us a cradle for the baby.” Joseph says, “My dear, at least we have this crib. Some people are so poor that even cockroaches shun them. One advantage of being poor is that it does not cost much. And though those who sleep on the floor never falls out of bed, riches are not always a blessing.” Mary says, “Joseph don’t speak loudly; the baby is sleeping.” Joseph says, “Yes we must not disturb him. He sleeps so soundly even in poor swaddling clothes.” Of course, it is man’s conscience and not his mattress that have most to do with his sleep. I touch the floor of the crib. It’s very cold. We have become so cold towards one another that God has become a human being to warm us up. Often, we are neither cold nor hot, but lukewarm and a lukewarm Christian makes a good bench warmer although a poor heart warmer. I kiss the feet of the child Jesus. All the legislation in the world cannot abolish kissing. The word “kiss” was invented by poets to rhyme with bliss. So when I kiss Jesus, I kiss the eternal bliss, but I must take care that I do not kiss as Judas did.

DE PIE ANTE LA CUNA A través de la historia de la salvación, la palabra de Dios llegó a través de mensajeros, humanos y angelicales, pero en la plenitud de los tiempos dijo Dios, “Jesús” Y la palabra de Dios se encarnó lanzando su cubierta entre no-sotros. Parado frente la cuna veo a Jesús. Muchos de nosotros tenemos nuestro propio nacimiento el cual tiene la cuna del niñito Jesús y juntos con nuestros hijos, la observamos año con año. En esta Navidad veo al niño Jesús presente en nuestra iglesia. En Él veo a Dios quien ha derrochado su generosidad en mí; pero cuando me veo a mi mismo me avergüenzo de ver un cuerpo de adulto atrapado en un niño de “kinder”. En El, veo como Dios se ha humillado bajando a mi nivel humano. Sin embargo solamente he sido un vaso vir-tualmente vacío que solamente hace ruido cuando contiene solo una moneda. Veo a Maria. Ella es hermosa por su corazón bondadoso. La belleza sin bon-dad es peor que el vino que intoxica tanto como al dueño como el que lo acompaña.Veo a San José. El calla cuando María está cerca. Ese silencio no es la ausencia del sonido sino de uno mismo. Cada uno de ellos se ha en-tregado a Dios en el pesebre. Nuestro mundo considera el silencio como una deficiencia. Por lo tanto algunos medios de comunicación nos mantienen des-piertos hasta en la Noche Buena, nos mantienen despiertos hasta el atardecer tocando la canción “Silent Night”. Yo analice este pesebre. Veo esencialmente lo que consideramos para una civilización moderna. No tiene ni puerta ni ventana (quienes nosotros hoy en día en esta vida moderna las mantenemos cerradas durante el día). No tienen un perro que le ladre ni quien le de la bienvenida a un huésped al llegar a esa casa moderna. Maria no tiene puestos pantalones de vestir, los cuáles no son suficientes en estos días. San José no está fumando un cigarro mientras que muchos de nosotros consumimos paquetes en un día, como si tuvieran todas las vitaminas necesarias. Y sin embargo las cosas civilizadas están ausentes de la cuna, aquí tenemos las primeras personas civilizadas en el mundo Jesús, María y José. ¿Después de todo de qué sirven las cosas civilizadas sin personas civilizadas?. Anteriormente muchas civilizaciones han sido destru-idas pero no por enemigos de otros lugares, sino por ellos mismos. Escuché a María decir a José, “Yo he escuchado a la gente que anda hablan-do de nosotros, que tendremos un niño sin vivir juntos como marido y mujer”. José dijo “no te preocupes Maria. El preocuparse no llega a nada con excep-ción de las arrugas, qué eso sí sería de qué preocuparse. Deja el argüende en paz, esos que andan con esas cosas caen en su propia trampa”. Maria dice, “Dios podría habernos dado una cuna para el bebe”. Jose dice, “Querida Ma-ria, al menos tenemos este pesebre. Algunas personas que son tan pobres que ni las cucarachas las rodean. Una de las ventajas de ser pobre es que no nos cuesta mucho. Aquellos que duermen en el piso, nunca se caerán de la cama, las riquezas no siempre son bendiciones.” Maria dice, “Jose, no hables tan fuerte; que el niño duerme.” Jose dice, “Si mejor si no interrumpimos su sueño. El esta bien dormidito aun en pobres pañales.” Claro, es la conciencia del hombre y no el colchón lo que no lo deja dormir. Toco el fondo del pese-bre. Esta frio. Nos hemos convertido en personas frías cuando tratamos a nuestros semejantes, que Dios se ha hecho humano para darnos calor. Regu-larmente, no somos ni fríos ni calientes, más bien como agua tibia y Cristianos tibios son calientabancas con pobres cálidos corazones. Beso los pies del niño Jesus. Todas las leyes del mundo no podrán detener “el besar”. En ingles la palabra “kiss” que es beso o besar, fue inventada por poetas para que rimara con la palabra en inglés “bliss” que significa felicidad. Entonces cuando beso a Jesus, beso a la felicidad eterna, pero necesito tener cuidado de no besar como Judas lo hizo. Con esto mis queridos hermanos y hermanas, LES DESEO UNA FELIZ NAVIDAD.
