If we wish to truly follow Jesus, we, too, must decide to turn away from worldly power and riches and put God at the center of our lives. Lent is our time to prune ourselves of earthly things. Ask God how he is calling you to serve.

STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION

The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God—we want control, power, and answers to all of life’s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The man and the woman ate the fruit of the one tree that God had told them to avoid, and their shame overtook them (Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7). Psalm — Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned (Psalm 51).

Lenten Penance Service

Our Parish Penance Service has been scheduled for

March 4, at 7pm. We encourage everyone to take ad-

vantage of this sacrament. We will have several priests

available. Students who will be receiving their First

Reconciliation are scheduled to begin at 6pm. Their will

be 2 priests available since we have so many students.

Attention St. Boniface Seniors How good it is to gather and mingle with each other and to share a meal. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By the First Sunday of Lent, many people have given up on “giving up.” Yet experiencing hunger for favorite things is a sign of a desire to face our deepest hungers. We do not embrace fasting as individuals, but rather as the community’s way of life in this sea-son. Sometimes it helps to see Sunday as an oasis in the Lenten desert, a place where fasting is not as strictly observed. If we count the days of the Lenten calendar, starting backward from the end of Lent on Holy Thursday, it is difficult to measure the forty days. Many are surprised to learn that the Sundays are counted as part of Lent, but are not counted in tallying the forty days of the Lenten fast. For that, we count the fast backward into last week, beginning on Ash Wednesday. So, until today we have been in the Len-ten fast, days that function as a kind of overture to a symphony of conversion. Today Lent solemnly begins, marked in many places by the sending of catechumens and candidates to the bishop for the call to the Easter sacraments. To-morrow with them, we embrace the Lenten fast again. Today we are exactly forty days from the opening of the Paschal Triduum on Holy Thursday. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

VIRTUS “Protecting God’s Children for Adults”

Will be held at Warner Robins on Saturday, March

14, 2020, 09:00am - 12:00pm. Training will be held

at Sacred Heart School in Social Hall Room 102.

This training is required for all volunteer and paid

adults 18 and over who in the course of their ministry

come into contact with minors: Choir, Ushers, EM’s,

Altar Servers, Faith Formation, Youth Group, etc.

We welcome all adults to attend as we are all called

to be Good Stewards to All God’s Children!

Registration is required prior to attending via online

at VIRTUS.org to receive credit for the session. No

one under the age of 18 is allowed due to the sensitive

subject matter. Please arrive early, there will be no

admittance once the session begins and latecomers

will be asked to reschedule.

Faith Formation News First Reconciliation rescheduled for 6 pm on March 4 In response to parent requests, Fr. Martino has rescheduled First Penance for 6 pm on Wednesday, March 4. Parish penance will still begin at 7 pm so feel free to bring your child then if that time is more convenient for you.

First Communion retreat set for April 25 The next First Communion retreat is scheduled for Satur-day, April 25, 2020, from 8:30 am to noon in the educa-tion building. If you require childcare for siblings, please sign up on the list outside the second grade classroom. We need a head count so we can make arrangements for care-givers. First Communion will be celebrated at the 11 am Mass on Sunday, May 3, 2020.

CCD needs YOU! Beginning August 2020, we will need four new catechists. If you are a confirmed Catholic, VIRTUS-compliant, with a sense of humor, gentle spirit and the willingness to joy-fully teach, guide and listen to children, you are qualified! 2020 Confirmation date set Confirmation will be celebrated at the 5 pm Mass on Sat-urday, December 5, 2020, the second weekend of Advent.

SAINT KATHARINE DREXEL (1858-1955) March 3 Born into Philadelphia society, Katharine was an infant when she lost her mother. Her father remarried and the couple taught their daughters that their wealth was a “gift on loan” to be shared with the poor, whom they fed and cared for in their home. Invited by priest friends to witness firsthand the destitution on Native American reservations, Katharine resolved to devote her inheritance to this apostolate and enter a contemplative order. When, however, in pri-vate audience, she begged Leo XIII to send missionaries to staff the schools she was building, the pope replied, “My child, why not become a missionary yourself?” Katharine renounced a twenty-million-dollar fortune and founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, adoring Christ present in the Eucharist and ministering to Christ suffering in victims of racial discrimination. Her Sisters established over sixty schools nationwide, including Xavier University, New Orle-ans, the first dedicated to professional education for African Americans. In 2000, John Paul II canonized “Mother Drexel,” praising her “excellent example of practical charity and generous solidarity with the less fortunate, long the distinguishing mark of American Catholics.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
