This past May, after years of study, ten men were ordained to the priesthood for our Diocese. As they prepared for their vocation, they were supported by family and friends. When you make a pledge to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, they are also supported by you since Appeal funds are used to help meet the cost of priestly formation and education. Please support our seminarians by making a pledge to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal today. For your convenience, you can make an online gift at www.2016 appeal.org.

My Dear Parishioners, This is the LORD’S DAY and the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Responsorial Psalm for the liturgy is taken from Psalm 98 with the response being, “The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice.” Justice is what the Lord will bring with Him on that last day when time is no more and all will be judged. Prior to this day

the Lord is merciful to us and He calls us to act in like manner with one another. In the 25th chapter of the Gospel of Saint Mat-thew we find that the manner in which we are compassionate to others will be used in our judgment, when justice will prevail. Each year as we come to the close of the liturgical year we are reminded of such things, the end, judgment and eternity. Since the glorification of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta this past September, I have been drawn to explore her writings and the spirituality from which they came. One of the sayings from Mother Teresa is: “The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service and the fruit of service is peace.” Saint Teresa’s prayer life was the incu-bator from which was born the wonderful work of service she performed around the world to help the poor, the sick, the elderly, the abandoned and the unborn. Without the faith-connection with God she would not have been so blessed with strength and in-spiration which made her a champion in the eyes of God and in the eyes of all people. The struggles and the sufferings which Saint Teresa endured in order to do this service have now merited her life with Christ our God. SERVICE is what we are called to offer. The Lord Jesus said that He Himself did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life in ransom for many. Service to those in need does bring peace within the heart of the servant, the one who is being helped and within the community. We have some service related happenings occurring here at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish and Saint Cecilia Parish. In both of our parishes a WINTER COAT DRIVE is taking place this weekend for distribution to the needy prior to the colder temperatures arriving. Many who will receive these coats are the homeless who spend many hours outdoors. At Saint Cecilia’s a FREE TRADE SALE is taking place this weekend and during the parish retreat. The candy sales items help those living in poor nations earn a living so that they can provide for their families. Another way by which we can help those in need this month is by supporting the FATHER JEAN CLAUDE FOUNDATION. The spirit of Father Jean Claude, our beloved parochial vicar who had died all too soon, will come alive when his brother, Father Jonas St. Martin, will visit Saint Cecilia Parish on the weekend of November 26-27 and will speak at all the masses. We will be invited to support the foundation which will sponsor a poor child in Haiti or a young woman in distress so that their lives may experience the justice we all seek. As we await the Day of Judgment when justice will be meted out, let us show mercy to that in need so that mercy will be shown to us. God bless you! Father Zig

580-St. Cecilia

Frances Xavier Cabrini was born in Lombardy, Italy, in 1850, one of thirteen children. At eighteen, she desired to become a Sister but poor health stood in her way. She helped her parents until their death, and then worked on a farm with her brothers and sisters. One day a priest asked her to teach in a girls’ school and she stayed for six years. At the request of her Bishop, she founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart to care for poor children in schools and hospitals. Then at the urging of Pope Leo XIII she came to the United Sates with six Sisters in 1889 to work among the Italian immigrants. Filled with a deep trust in God and endowed with a wonderful administrative ability, this remarkable woman soon founded schools, hospitals, and orphanages in a strange land and saw them flourish in the aid of Italian immigrants and children. At the time of her death, in Chicago on December 22, 1917, her institute numbered houses in England, France, Spain and the United States, and South America. In 1946, she became the first American citizen to be canonized when she was elevated to sainthood by Pope Pius XII. PRAYER: God, through the work of St. Frances Cabrini you brought comfort and love to the immigrants and those in need. May her example and work be continued in the lives of those dedicated to you. Amen. Taken from, Lives of the Saints, Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999 New Jersey
