Your generosity allows us to renew the Lord’s House, our spiritual home. I know that the completed work will be beautiful and inspirations. I ask all parishioners to join with me in making a dona-tion to the renovation fund. I know that the Lord will richly bless you for the generosity you show to His church.

Catechists Needed “Do you want to do a good deed? Teach the young!”

~ St. John Bosco As we prepare to open another year of religious education classes for the youth of this parish, we are again in need of cate‐chists (teachers) and classroom aides. Fear not, this is not your work, but God’s. If you are nervous about teaching and the stress or work that might be involved, don’t worry help is avail‐able. If you are interested in helping or just curious about helping, please let us know. We also have a need for teachers and aides that have a back‐ground in special education. This has been an underserved ministry for many years. We have a new special education pro‐gram and we are in need of staff with more specialized back‐ground in this field. Please contact Jim Clancy at the parish office for more details. 973‐627‐0313 ext 17 or [email protected]

“The first classes for the Rite of Christian Initiation begin at 9 am Oct 2 for families with children who have not yet received 1st commun-ion in the Catholic Church and are beyond 2nd grade and at 11:45 am Oct 2 for baptized Catholics beyond

10th grade who have not received Confirmation and for per-sons who have renounced the Catholic Faith and now desire to return and for all non-Catholic persons interested in entering the Catholic Faith.”

My Dear Parishioners, As we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day on this 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time the Scriptural texts speak of the suffering which accompanies faith. Indeed the Prophet Jeremiah suffers because of his fidelity to the vocation to which God has given him. In the Gospel the Lord Jesus tells His listeners that they will experi-ence upset in their relations with others all because of their allegiance to Him. In the epistle reading believers

are encouraged to know that they are surrounded by” a great cloud of witnesses”, the company of heaven who had run the race and now share in the victory of the righteous. Yes, suffering accompanies us in our faith journey through life. Conducting ourselves according to the Commandments and Evangelical values proclaimed by the Lord will put us at odds with others and the world in which we live. This will bring divi-sion and will distinguish the followers of Christ from those who reject Him. This division will be seen in families, neighborhoods and the work places where authentic Christians are to be found. Called to be different can be a scary and difficult invitation. Strength is found in the Epistle to the Hebrews which says, “…Let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on JESUS, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.” By keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus we will gain the courage to live honorably, generously and with great virtues. Once we take our gaze from Him we will be seduced by the lures of the devil which will lead us into the dark places which bring disaster. Many are headed in this dark direction but we must stay the course which has been run by the saints before us, that great cloud of witnesses who are cheering us on to the finishing line in heaven. Our parish church is the place where we are surrounded by the images of the saints, the great cloud of witnesses, who remind us of their intercession each time we enter this holy house. Our renovation work is coming to a conclusion. The church has been painted, the exterior doors have been refurbished, the floors are being treated and the art work in being applied. Soon all will be completed. We are honored with the Bishop’s presence in our parish this Sunday and I am hoping he will be returning soon to bless our completed work. I am not sure when we will return to the church for Holy Mass because there is still some cleaning which needs to be done and some other minor items which need to be addressed. But I do know that it should not be long. You have all been very patient and cooperative with our worship in Hayes Hall. I would like to thank the ladies who launder the Mass linens regularly and who recently laundered all the altar server robes. Our thanks to: Kathy Gorman, Catherine Haynes, Rose Marie Hester, Louise Naclerio, Stella Rychlicki, Peg Whalen and Deidra Zink. Also my thanks to John and Diana Sullivan for the work they had done at the church this past week. May the Lord richly bless them! Have a good week! (and, God bless you!) Father Zig

580-St. Cecilia

The son of Geysa, the fourth Duke of the Hungarians, and of Sarboth, his wife, who had both been recently con-verted to Christianity, St. Stephen was born in 977 at Gran, then the capital of Hungary. After a Christian educa-tion under the care of St. Adalbert, Bishop of Prague, and of Theodatus, a virtuous Italian Count, he succeeded his father upon the latter’s death in 997. He established a solid peace with all neighboring nations and then turned his attention to rooting idolatry out of his country. His methods were those of persuasion and exhortation, but many of his subjects, on account of their attachment to the religion of their ancestors, rebelled and besieged their King in Vesprin. St. Stephen prepared himself for battle by fasting, almsgiving, and prayer, and though his forces were inferior in number to those of the rebels he nevertheless completely routed them. The work of propagating the Faith now went on with renewed vigor. Churches, monasteries, and Bishoprics were founded, and the King sent an embassy to Rome to obtain from Pope Sylvester II the confirmation of his foundations; and, in order to gratify the wish of his subjects, he also besought for himself the title of King. The request was granted, and the Pope sent a rich crown to the holy King. The prelate who brought the crown from Rome anointed and crowned St. Stephen king in the year 1000 The devotion of St. Stephen toward the Blessed Virgin Mary was such that he placed all his dominions under her special patron-age. In war, which he never undertook without necessity, he was always victorious, nor was he ever the aggressor. His time was divided between the duties of religion and those of his station; he kept his soul constantly recollected in God, and in the midst of the world he practiced great mortification and humility. He died August 15, 1038. PRAYER: Almighty God, Your Church flourished through the efforts of St. Stephen when he reigned on earth. Grant that she may now be defended by him swelling gloriously in heaven. Amen Taken from, Lives of the Saints, Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999 New Jersey
