SUNDAY THOUGHT Matthew 2:1-12

On the Feast of the Epiphany, we celebrate our belief

that through Jesus, the Son of God, we come to know

God and His immense love for each of us. It is so easy

in the course of our busy lives to lose touch with the

awareness that God is with us and loves us. In the

hectic pace of modern day living, God often gets

pushed aside, or sometimes even forgotten about for the

moment. Then one day something happens. It doesn’t

seem to matter whether the event is either happy or sad;

we are reminded that we need Him and we begin to

look for Him again. Often it is at times like these that

God seems so far away and so difficult to find.

Epiphany is one of the days in the Church’s liturgical

year that reminds us that if we are searching for God,

don’t look far away. He is very near. Look within and

you will find Him waiting for you where he has been all

the time … in the quiet of your heart.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 7, 2018

CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Salomone (Solomon) Leclercq, Martyr (1745-1792)

Saint Solomon Leclercq was born Guillamune-Noclas-

Louis Leclercq in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France on

November 15, 1745. His father, a wealthy merchant,

wanted Guillaume to follow him in the merchant trade,

but Guillaume wanted to be like the Christian Brothers

of St. John Baptist de La Salle who taught him at

school. At twenty-one, he entered the novitiate, taking

the name Salomone (Solomon). After his profession,

he taught mathematics for several years at the

scholasticate at Melun.

In 1792 Salomone was serving as the secretary

to the Superior general in Paris when the revolutionary

government began cracking down on priests and

religious who refused to take an oath to uphold the

French Constitution, thereby rejecting the authority of

the pope. After their schools were closed, the Christian

Brothers left the city. Salomone alone remained to

watch over the Paris house. On August 15,

revolutionaries broke into the house and arrested him.

He was imprisoned with other religious at the nearby

Hotel des Carmes, a Carmelite monastery. On

September 2, the prisoners were given the chance to

declare their adherence to the constitution. They

unanimously refused, and were brutally hacked to

death in the monastery garden.

One hundred eighty-eight of these “September

Martyrs” were beatified in 1926 by Pope Pius XI. The

miraculous cure of a Venezuelan girl from the bite of a

venomous snake in 2009 set the stage for Salomone’s

2016 canonization by Pope Francis on 16 October

2016. Saint Salomone Leclercq’s feast day is

September 2nd.

ST. ANTHONY FOOD PANTRY As we begin a new year, we would like to thank

everyone for their generous contributions to our food

pantry in 2017 and we look forward to a prosperous

2018. The requested items this week are paper towels,

spaghetti sauce, tuna, cereal, macaroni and cheese

and jelly. Thank you for your continued suppor t of

this important parish ministry.

EVANGELIZATION TIP The Magi came to meet Jesus by

way of a star. Be the star today.

Let your words and deeds bring

people to Jesus.

SOCIAL CONCERNS

COMMISSION The St. Anthony Social Concerns

volunteers will be serving lunch at the

West Side Catholic Center on Tuesday,

January 16, 2018. Your homemade

desserts are truly appreciated by the people who eat at

the center. Some of the men and women from the

center ask us to package their desserts to take home so

we are asking for brownies (preferably without icing),

cookies, bar cookies, or breads that can be sliced

(banana, pumpkin, etc.). You can drop off your

bakery at the rectory on Monday, January 15, 2018. If

you would like to help us in our mission to serve the

needy and you really don’t like to bake, please

consider a cash donation to help defray the cost of our

meals. Any donations are welcome. Thank you.

If you would like your contribution statement for

2017, kindly fill out the form below and drop it in the

collection basket, or at the rectory office. Statements

Did you know that the traditional names of the Magi are Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar.

RETROUVAILLE Retrouvaille is a three-month program to help couples struggling in their marriages. It has three phases, starting with a weekend experience in which couples learn to re-establish communication and to gain new insights into themselves as individuals and as a couple. Post sessions are held over a period of 12 weeks to further develop and enhance the techniques learned on the weekend. A support group is available offering interaction with other couples who are striving to improve their relationship. The 2018 weekends scheduled are: January 19-21, April 13-15 and September 21-23. CONTINUING IN THE SPIRIT OF

CHRISTMAS

All women of the parish are invited to attend a service project and fireside chat hosted by the Women’s Faith Ministry on Wednesday, January 17 at

7 p.m. in the Hospitality Room. At that time we will take up a collection of adult socks, gently worn or new jackets, long sleeve flannel shirts, warm slacks, hats, mittens, scarves, etc. to be donated for the homeless who are served at St. Malachi. If you are unable to attend but would like to donate items, there will be a collection box in the hospitality room. We will also learn more about St. Malachi's ministry and the history of Benedict Joseph Labre, patron Saint of the homeless. Feel free to invite other women outside the parish to join us for fellowship and refreshments. Please RSVP by Monday, January 15 by calling the parish office at (440) 842-2666 or by sending an email to [email protected]. This program will be cancelled if other events in Parma are cancelled due to weather conditions. Tune in to the news for that information.

TRACK COORDINATOR NEEDED The St. Anthony of Padua Athletic Association has an opening for a Track Coordinator for the 2018 Track Season. Please contact Jerry Towalski at [email protected] for additional information or to volunteer.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 7, 2018

PARISH CALENDARS A heartfelt thank you goes to Mr. John Riczo from the Riczo Funeral Home and also a St. Anthony parishioner for once again providing our parish with calendars for 2018. His continued generosity to the parish is deeply appreciated. As we begin a New Year, it’s a good time to say thank you to all our kind and loyal bulletin sponsors. Our patronage is one good way to show our appreciation.

CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Incense: Incense is an aromatic substance used in the liturgical prayer of the Church. When burned, the incense produces rising smoke and gives off a perfumed aroma. It signifies the zeal with which the faithful should be consumed, the good odor of Christian virtue, and the ascent of prayer to God. Incense was one of the three gifts given to Christ Child by the Magi.

CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER “For by gold the power of a king is signified, by frankincense the honor of God, by myrrh the burial of the body; and accordingly they offer Him gold as King, frankincense as God, myrrh as Man.” — St. John Chrysostom.

SO MANY PEOPLE TO THANK!

The people of St. Anthony have once again shown themselves most kind. We at the rectory have been blessed with cards, gifts and goodies. We have attempted to thank you individually, but if you have been missed, please accept our most sincere thank you! We make a promise of prayers in return.
