    Parish Family Prayers

Because He loved us first, we seek to do His will The prayer theme for this month is Family. "God in his deepest mystery is not a solitude, but a family, since he has in himself fatherhood, sonship, and the essence of family, which is love." (Pope Saint John-Paul II, homily January 28, 1979) This week we pray especially for children, youth, and young adults. Lord, we ask your blessing on our parents, our children and extended family. We love one another, because You loved us first. Help us to forgive one another, to support one another, to work and play together, but most of all, to pray and grow together in Christ. Lord, provide our family with the strength never to be afraid and to stand up for what is pleasing to You. Jesus, you are the Good Shepherd, gather our whole family into your flock. Unite us and give us peace as we seek to follow you. Amen.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, pray for us!

(The Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful People) POST-SYNODAL APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION

Published 12.30.1988: Pope St. John Paul II

PART II All Branches of a Single Vine The Participation of the Lay Faithful in the Life of the Church as Communion The Mystery of Church Communion Ministries and Charisms: The Spirit’s Gifts to the Church The Second Vatican Council says that the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, lavishes diverse hierarchical and charismatic gifts on all the baptized. She calls each to be, in an individual way, active and co-responsible. Ministries, Offices and Roles The ministries as they now exist in the Church are a participation in the ministry of Jesus Christ himself. The Apostle, Paul, is clear about the ministerial make-up of the Church in his time. He says that God has appointed first apostles, second prophets, and third teachers. (cf 1 Cor 12:28) In a somewhat expanded statement he speaks similarly in Ephesians. (cf Eph 4:7, 11-13) These and other New Testament texts indicate the diversity of ministries as well as of gifts and ecclesial tasks in the early Church. The Ministries Derived from Holy Orders In the primary position in the Church are the ordained ministries; the Sacrament of Orders. The mission of the apostles, even as it is now entrusted to the pastors of his people, is a true service referred to in the Scriptures as “diakonia,” service. From Christ through the Sacrament of Orders, in an uninterrupted way, the ministries receive the authority to serve the Church. Acting “in persona Christi capitas” (in the person of Christ, the Head) they gather the Church in the Holy Spirit through Gospel and Sacrament.. The ordained ministries are a grace for the entire Church. The Holy Father now makes a very significant point: “These ministries express and realize a participation in the priesthood of Jesus Christ that is different, not simply in degree but in essence, from the participation given to all the laity through Baptism.” He notes that the Second Vatican Council recalls how the ministerial priesthood has the royal priesthood of all the laity as its aim and is ordered to it. They for their part must acknowledge the ministerial priesthood as necessary for their participation in the mission of the Church. The Ministries, Offices and Roles of the Lay Faithful John Paul II begins here by noting that the Church’s mission of salvation is realized not only by the ministers of the Sacrament of Orders but also by all the lay faithful. In fact, because of their Baptismal state, the laity participates in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly mission of Christ. Pastors should foster these ministries, offices, and roles of the lay faithful that derive from Baptism, Confirmation, and most especially from the Sacrament of Matrimony. Dcn.
