Because He loved us first, we seek to do His will The prayer theme for this month is Family. "God in his deepest mystery is not a solitude, but a family, since he has in himself fatherhood, sonship, and the essence of family, which is love." (Pope Saint John-Paul II, homily January 28, 1979) This week we pray especially for single parents, separated or divorce couples and those who are widowed. Lord, we ask your blessing on our parents, our children and extended family. We love one another, because You loved us first. Help us to forgive one another, to support one another, to work and play together, but most of all, to pray and grow together in Christ. Lord, provide our family with the strength never to be afraid and to stand up for what is pleasing to You. Jesus, you are the Good Shepherd, gather our whole family into your flock. Unite us and give us peace as we seek to follow you. Amen.

Ayúdanos a perdonarnos los unos a los otros, a apoyarnos, a trabajar y recrearnos juntos; pero sobre todo, a orar y crecer juntos en Cristo. PART II All Branches of a Single Vine The Participation of the Lay Faithful in the Life of the Church as Communion The Ministries, Offices and Roles of the Lay Faithful When necessary the Pastors (Bishops) can entrust to the lay faithful roles connected to pastoral ministry but that do not require the Sacrament of Orders. (e.g. in the absence of lectors or acolytes, laity may serve in the ministry of the word and distribute Holy Communion) The Holy Father is careful to point out that the word “minister” refers to one who has received sacramental ordination. Simply exercising a “ministry” does not make one a minister. The Second Vatican Council says that only the Sacrament of Orders gives the ordained minister a particular participation in the office of Christ, the Shepherd and Head, and in his Eternal Priesthood. The Fathers of this Synod on the Laity have appreciated the contributions of the laity in circumstances of necessity. As a consequence of the liturgical renewal the laity themselves have become aware of and are more disposed to fulfill appropriate roles. The liturgical celebration is indeed one of the entire assembly. It is natural that the tasks not proper to the ordained ministers be fulfilled by the lay faithful. Along with its expression of gratitude, this Synod voiced its concerns as well about a too indiscriminate use of the word “ministry”, the confusion and equating of the common priesthood and the ministerial priesthood, and the lack of observance of ecclesiastical norms. It expressed a concern over the arbitrary interpretation of the concept of “supply” and a tendency towards a “clericalization” of the lay faithful that risked the creation of a parallel ecclesial structure of service not founded on Sacramental Orders. John Paul II remarks how the Synod Fathers sought a clarity of expression and more precision of terminology when referring to the unity of the Church’s mission in which all the baptized participate, and the substantial diversity of the ministry of pastors that is rooted in the Sacrament of Orders. All the while they wished to respect the various ministries and roles in the Church rooted in Baptism and Confirmation. The Synod expressed its concern that Pastors, in instituting such lay roles, base them upon Baptism. They voiced concern that Pastors also guarded against a “facile recourse to presumed situations of emergency” to “supply by necessity” where objectively it did not exist or where alternative possibilities could have been created. The Holy Father expresses the Synod’s concern in saying that the various ministries and roles pertinent to the lay faithful ought to be exercised in conformity to their specific lay vocation which is different from that of the sacred ministry.
