DIOCESAN EVENTS

RESPECT LIFE CORNER Easter Joy – This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad! The darkness of the winter

is gone and the gloom of Good Friday is behind us. Today is a wonderful day to celebrate Christ’s

love for us. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: Let us go forth today with a song in our hearts. After you

leave Mass, do you ever have a few lines of a hymn that stick with you the rest of the day? The song

resonates in your heart so much that you want to sing it or carry the tune in your heart the rest of the

day. That’s joy! Let’s share it! Share joy with everyone you encounter today – smile, be happy, greet

strangers, go out of your way to be nice to people. Slow down. Appreciate the small moments of joy

today, and then share it with others.

Easter is our greatest feast of the Liturgical year. Our redemption has been accomplished and Jesus has overcome death and sin. This is what we commemorate through each celebration of the Eucharist which allows us to receive our Lord in Holy Communion. We must pray, encourage and work to promote more priestly vocations so that we can continue to have the opportunity of receiving Holy Communion. Look this week to encourage a young man to consider entering the seminary to discern a priestly vocation.

ENCOUNTER THE RISEN CHRIST We prayed, fasted and gave alms – and now we celebrate Easter joy! Our Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl challenges us as we encounter our Risen Lord to bring the hope of Resurrection to a world in need. Don’t forget to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl if you haven’t already. There is a basket at the front entrance to church.

The First Glorious Mystery

THE RESURRECTION

1. The body of Jesus is placed in the tomb on the evening of Good

Friday.

2. His soul descends into the realm of the dead to announce to the Just

the tidings of their redemption.

3. Fearing the body of Jesus will be taken, the chief priests place guards

at the tomb.

4. On the third day Jesus rises from the dead, glorious and immortal.

5. The earth quakes as the angel rolls back the stone, the guards flee in

terror.

6. The holy women coming to anoint the body of Jesus are amazed and

frightened to find the tomb open.

7. An angel calms their fears: "He is not here. He has risen as He said."

8. Jesus appears to Mary Magdalen and Peter and two disciples on the

way to Emmaus.

9. That evening He appears to the apostles behind locked doors: "Peace

be unto you... do not be afraid."

10. Jesus breathes on them and gives them the power to forgive sin.

Spiritual Fruit: Spiritual Fruit: Let us pray that the resurrection of our Lord

Jesus will give hope and joy to Catholics and Christians around the world to unite

and pray for an end to violence and oppression.

EMAIL PHISHING SCAM

Beware…there is an email phishing scam targeted at church-goers!! The basics of the scam are that church members get an email from their minister requested them to make a contribution to the church by buying and sending in gift cards. The emails seem harmless enough. They have the local pastor’s name and an email address that looks legitimate, but upon further inspection, the email address is actually different than the one the church normally uses. In some instances, the sender’s name may look correct but is missing a single letter. In a new version of the scam, the phishers are using text messaging to try and fill up the collection plate in their favor. One report out of Delray Beach, Florida, asked the victim to purchase several gift cards, take a photo of them, & send these photos to the “pastor.” That sounds innocent except for the fact that gift cards contain numeric code that allows the scammers to turn the gift cards into actual purchases. In the case of the Delray victim, the phishers landed a really big fish -- $10,500 in gift cards! “The key to protecting yourself from this scam is to first be skeptical whenever you get a request to wire money or make a payment through any form of gift card because once money has been wired or sent in the form of a gift card, it is gone forever, which is why these are favorite methods of payment for scammers,” warns Steve Weisman of Scamicide. “As for gift cards, once you provide the numbers from the gift cards, the scammers utilize the gift cards to make purchases that they quickly sell in order to get cash.” “No church solicits gift cards nor does the IRS which is why when someone is posing as a religious institution or the IRS asks for a payment through a gift card you can be sure it is a scam. The second thing that we all should do is always confirm the legitimacy of any request for a donation of any kind before making a payment,” Weisman said. Be cautious...despite the lack of confidence consumers have in the government, the government can actually be of help in situations like this – especially the consumer friendly Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

1. Don’t text back. Legitimate companies won’t ask you to verify your identity through unsecured channels, like text or email.

2. Don’t click on any links within the message. Links can install malware on your device & take you to spoof sites to try to get your information.

3. Report the message to your cell phone carrier’s spam text reporting number. If you’re an AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, or Bell customer, you can forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) free of charge.

The best advice might be to forward any suspicious emails or texts to the FTC via

[email protected]. The FTC recommends that you also cc the organization impersonated in the email/message!

From the Catechism…Matrimony

Let’s look at some paragraphs from the Catechism of the Catholic Church regarding the grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony: 1641 "By reason of their state in life and of their order, [Christian spouses] have their own special gifts in the People of God." This grace proper to the sacrament of Matrimony is intended to perfect the couple's love and to strengthen their indissoluble unity. By this grace they "help one another to attain holiness in their married life and in welcoming and educating their children." 1642 Christ is the source of this grace. "Just as of old God encountered his people with a covenant of love and fidelity, so our Savior, the spouse of the Church, now encounters Christian spouses through the sacrament of Matrimony." Christ dwells with them, gives them the strength to take up their crosses and so follow him, to rise again after they have fallen, to forgive one another, to bear one another's burdens, to "be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ," and to love one another with supernatural, tender, and fruitful love. In the joys of their love and family life he gives them here on earth a foretaste of the wedding feast of the Lamb: “How can I ever express the happiness of a marriage joined by the Church, strengthened by an offering, sealed by a blessing, announced by angels, and ratified by the Father? . . . How wonderful the bond between two believers, now one in hope, one in desire, one in discipline, one in the same service! They are both children of one Father and servants of the same Master, undivided in spirit and flesh, truly two in one flesh. Where the flesh is one, one also is the spirit.” (Tertullian, AD 160-220) So, we see that God gives grace, that is, strength and help, won by Jesus on the Cross, to married couples to strengthen their union and help their love to grow.
