DIOCESAN EVENTS

RESPECT LIFE CORNER Respect Life Corner –The gift of free will, In Sirach 15:15 We are given a choice every day by Our Father; to

trust in Him in all things and to accept His unfailing love, or to stumble on our own accord, “If you choose you

can keep the commandments, they will save you. If you trust in God, you will live.” What a double-edge sword

our free will is! We can choose between fire and water, life and death and good and evil. Our Father longs for

us to choose Him, but He will never force us. If we place our lives in His hands, He will fortify us with every

grace through Baptism (water) and help us turn away from sin through our trust in Him. With free will comes

great responsibility, not only for ourselves, but the world around us. Attending Mass, spending time in

Eucharistic Adoration, receiving the sacraments are a few ways to put on the armor of Our Lord as we head out

into the world each day. In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us plainly about the pitfalls of sin, “Whoever is angry

with his brother will be liable to judgment.” Learn, Act, Connect and Pray- It’s our job as God’s children to be

peacemakers. Pray for those who have hurt you throughout your life. If you have been in the wrong, reach out

and make a phone call or send a note and apologize. Remember to do your best to live in right relationship with

others. The kingdom of God is here on earth and it begins with each one of us!

The Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal 2019 …Blessed to receive, chosen to give

Our parish participation goal for the 2019 appeal was 58 households and our financial target was $6,000.00. Pledges to Date: 39 $6,220.00 103% of Total Goal

Life is about saying “yes” to the things that help you to grow in holiness and no to the

things that don’t. Life is about searching for the best version of yourself. Today’s

culture doesn’t have a vision for the human person. The goal of today’s culture is

consumption as we no longer are the consumers---we are being consumed. It is time

for us to start thinking about where our lives are leading and to where God is calling us.

The ways of the world lead to confusion. God’s way leads to clarity, order and to a

meaningful living with joy. Life is a choice we all have to make. So, fulfill God’s

vision for you and answer his call with a “yes”.

The Fourth Luminous Mystery

THE TRANSFIGURATION

1. Jesus took Peter, James and John up a high mountain to pray.

2. Jesus was transfigured before them.

3. "His face became as dazzling as the sun, his clothes as radiant as

light."

4. This was to fortify their faith to withstand the coming tragedy of the

Passion.

5. Jesus foresaw the 'scandal of the cross,' and prepared them for it by

this manifestation of His glory.

6. Moses and Elijah (representing the Law and the prophets of the Old

Testament) were conversing with Jesus about His passion.

7. "Do not think I have come to destroy the Law or the Prophets... but to

fulfill them."

8. From a cloud came a voice: "This is my beloved Son, listen to Him."

9. Jesus admonishes them not to tell the vision to anyone until the Son of

Man rises from the dead.

10. We too will behold the transfigured Jesus on the Last Day.

Spiritual Fruit: Let us pray for the respect for life from conception to

end of natural life & for all women contemplating abortion, may God

lead them to seek alternatives.

Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians Here is chapter two of Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, from which our second reading is taken on Sunday, February 9th, and Sunday, February 16th, from the Good News Translation: 1 When I came to you, my friends, to preach God's secret truth, I did not use big words and great learning. 2 For while I was with you, I made up my mind to forget everything except Jesus Christ and especially his death on the cross. 3 So when I came to you, I was weak and trembled all over with fear, 4 and my teaching and message were not delivered with skillful words of human wisdom, but with convincing proof of the power of God's Spirit. 5 Your faith, then, does not rest on human wisdom but on God's power. 6 Yet I do proclaim a message of wisdom to those who are spiritually mature. But it is not the wisdom that belongs to this world or to the powers that rule this world - powers that are losing their power. 7 The wisdom I proclaim is God's secret wisdom, which is hidden from human beings, but which he had already chosen for our glory even before the world was made. 8 None of the rulers of this world knew this wisdom. If they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as the scripture says, "What no one ever saw or heard, what no one ever thought could happen, is the very thing God prepared for those who love him." 10 But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, even the hidden depths of God's purposes. 11 It is only our own spirit within us that knows all about us; in the same way, only God's Spirit knows all about God. 12 We have not received this world's spirit; instead, we have received the Spirit sent by God, so that we may know all that God has given us. 13 So then, we do not speak in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, as we explain spiritual truths to those who have the Spirit. 14 Whoever does not have the Spirit cannot receive the gifts that come from God's Spirit. Such a person really does not understand them, and they seem to be nonsense, because their value can be judged only on a spiritual basis. 15 Whoever has the Spirit, however, is able to judge the value of everything, but no one is able to judge him. 16 As the scripture says, "Who knows the mind of the Lord? Who is able to give him advice?" We, however, have the mind of Christ.

The Third Commandment: Remember to Keep Holy the Lord’s Day Let’s summarize what is taught in the Catechism of the Catholic Church about the Third Commandment: Remember to Keep Holy the Lord’s Day, as is done in the Catechism itself: 2189 "Observe the sabbath day, to keep it holy" (Deuteronomy 5:12). "The seventh day is a sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord" (Exodus 31:15). 2190 The sabbath, which represented the completion of the first creation, has been replaced by Sunday which recalls the new creation inaugurated by the Resurrection of Christ. 2191 The Church celebrates the day of Christ's Resurrection on the "eighth day," Sunday, which is rightly called the Lord's Day. 2192 "Sunday . . . is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church.” "On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass." (Code of Canon (Church) Law) 2193 "On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound . . . to abstain from those labors and business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is proper to the Lord's Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and body." (Code of Canon (Church) Law) 2194 The institution of Sunday helps all "to be allowed sufficient rest and leisure to cultivate their familial, cultural, social, and religious lives." (Vatican Council 2 - 1965) 2195 Every Christian should avoid making unnecessary demands on others that would hinder them from observing the Lord's Day. Let us pray that we may all help each other to worship and thank God by participating in Mass each Sunday, that we may refrain from unnecessary work, and that we not make demands on others to work on Sundays. Let us pray that Sunday may be a day when we find rest and spend time with our families and those who are close to us. - Fr. Von Deeke
