DIOCESAN EVENTS

RESPECT LIFE CORNER God’s Gift of Forgiveness – The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is one of the means by which our relationship with Jesus Christ and the Church is healed, restored and ultimately strengthened. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: Even before anyone of us can consider seeking forgiveness in the Sacrament of Penance, we know God is already at work in our hearts. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life” (Jn 3:16). By reflecting on that familiar passage, we can begin to grasp the significance of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. When was the last time you celebrated the sacrament? How can we be effective instruments of God's mercy if we do not regularly experience that mercy in a most personal way?

The 2018 Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal Commitment Weekend

This is commitment weekend for The Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal and we encourage you to support this diocesan-wide appeal which supports 14 ministries and programs that serve thousands of people every day throughout our Belleville Diocese. Your one-time gift or pledge can be made today or in the weeks ahead utilizing the response card you received in the mail or one of the in-pew envelopes. Donations can also be made online at www.diobelle.org. Every gift – large or small – is truly needed and appreciated. Please reflect prayerfully on how you and your family have been blessed and consider supporting this year’s Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal – its success depends on you! Thank you for your consideration and generosity. Mr. Ryan Grohmann will speak to us regarding the CSMA at both Masses the weekend of March 17th and 18th.

I was born into a Catholic family, but it was not until the eighth grade, after I had received Confirmation, that the faith came alive for me… when (the) idea of priesthood first crossed my mind. During sophomore (year) at Franciscan University…I began a four-year wrestling match with God about my vocation. The moment of clarity came in prayer during a silent retreat. How could I resist it any longer? Steven DiMassimo, seminarian, Diocese of Raleigh; Columbia Feb. 2018

We encounter Andrise, a teacher in Haiti who knows the importance of forming young people who will give back to the community – and their country. Reflect on the role teachers have played in bringing you closer to God and your community. How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities?

The Third Sorrowful Mystery

THE CROWNING WITH THORNS

1. Pilate asks, "Are You a king?" Jesus answers: "I am a King, but My

kingdom is not of this world."

2. In the praetorium, the soldiers place an old purple robe on Jesus in

mockery of His claim to be a king.

3. They fashion a crown out of thorns, and forcefully press it down upon

His head.

4. In His bound hands they place a reed, as a sceptre, in mockery of His

kingship.

5. Kneeling before Him in derision, they spit on Him, and cry out: "Hail,

King of the Jews!"

6. Taking the reed from His hand they strike Him on the head, driving the

thorns more deeply into His scalp.

7. Pilate brings Jesus before the people, hoping His pitiful sight will soften

them: "Behold the man!"

8. Their response: "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!"

9. Our Blessed Lord submitted to this terrible humiliation to make

reparation for our pride.

10. Father, by the merits of this painful humiliation, have mercy on us and

on the whole world.

Spiritual Fruit: that the Lenten season will bring all of us closer to our Savior Jesus

Christ and that we take the time to reflect on His Suffering and Death. May we all pray

that people of all faiths come together during this Holy Season to pray for peace and

unity among all people.

125th Anniversary of the Construction and Dedication of Our Church Building In the next year and a half, we will be remembering the 125th anniversary of several milestones in the construction and dedication of our current Saint Augustine of Canterbury Church building. Originally, near our present cemetery, west of Hecker, our parish built a log church, in 1824, and then a stone church. The stone church construction began in 1835. The church was consecrated on November 11, 1838 by Bishop Joseph Rosati of Saint Louis. This is commemorated by a brick marker and plaque near the front of our cemetery. This stone church was rebuilt in the 1850’s. In the 1890’s, it was determined that the stone church near the cemetery was “very unsafe and not worth further expenditure of money,” according to History of Saint Augustine of Canterbury Parish 1824-1974, by Josephine C. Wittenauer. The decision was made to build a new church, our present church, in the village of Hecker. “The change of location was strongly opposed by a number of parishioners.” Despite the disputes, Rev. John Schlotmann oversaw the construction of the church. Key dates include: - April 11, 1893 – The cornerstone was laid by Right Reverend John Janssen, Bishop

of Belleville. The limestone for the foundation was donated by John Benjamin

Harbaugh, of the parish. The sandstone for the walls was donated by Albert

Degenhardt, from the property of George and Matilda Blackburn.

- October 1893 – Carpenters began construction of the roof of the church.

- August 15, 1894 – The first Mass was celebrated in the new church on the Feast of

the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Father Schlotmann privately blessed

the church before this Mass.

- August 16, 1894 – A Requiem High Mass was celebrated for those benefactors who

had died during the time of the construction of the new church.

- October 10, 1894 - Right Reverend John Janssen, Bishop of Belleville, dedicated the

church.

The 125th Anniversary of the Dedication of our Saint Augustine of Canterbury Church will be celebrated in October 2019.
