DIOCESAN EVENTS

RESPECT LIFE CORNER The Spiritual Works of Mercy: During this Lenten season, instead of giving up something, perhaps a focus on giving yourself to others would be more beneficial to your soul. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, the Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to help our neighbors and their spiritual needs. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: The Spiritual Works of Mercy are counseling the doubtful (everyone has

moments of doubt, how can you help guide them), instructing the ignorant (learn about our faith, volunteer with

PSR or faith formation), admonishing the sinner (be supportive, we are all in need of God’s loving correction), comforting the sorrowful (be open to listening, sometimes your presence is the biggest comfort), forgiving

injuries (participate in the Sacrament of Penance), bearing wrongs patiently (try to let go of grudges, place

your hope in God), and praying for the living and the dead (prayer is powerful, request a mass intention for

someone going through a difficult time or someone who has recently passed).

I was born into a Catholic family, but it was not until the eighth grade, after

I had received Confirmation, that the faith came alive for me, when (the)

idea of priesthood first crossed my mind. During sophomore (year) at

Franciscan University, I began a four-year wrestling match with God about

my vocation. The moment of clarity came in prayer during a silent retreat.

Adult Faith Formation House

Pope Francis: Rejoice and be Glad!

No matter where life finds you today, holiness is within reach! Join us this Lent as we read and discuss Pope Francis’ latest work, Rejoice and Be Glad, in which the Pope guides us, with wit and insight, to live our call to holiness in today’s world. From how to avoid false forms of holiness, to finding inspiration in the lives of the saints, Pope Francis explores the heights and depths of practical Christian holiness. He invites all Christians to discern and generously respond to one’s personal mission. Make this Lent a time of prayer, spiritual reading, and discussion among fellow Catholics, as we journey with Pope Francis toward the joy of holiness. Contact Karen Seaborn at [email protected] or 939-6426, ext. 22, to sign up for this Lenten series.

From the Catechism…Matrimony Let’s look at a few more paragraphs from the Catechism of the Catholic Church regarding the consent given by the bride and groom through which they enter into Marriage: 1630 The priest (or deacon) who assists at the celebration of a marriage receives the consent of the spouses in the name of the Church and gives the blessing of the Church. The presence of the Church's minister (and also of the witnesses) visibly expresses the fact that marriage is an ecclesial reality. 1631 This is the reason why the Church normally requires that the faithful contract marriage according to the ecclesiastical form. Several reasons converge to explain this requirement: - Sacramental marriage is a liturgical act. It is therefore appropriate that it should be celebrated in the public liturgy of the Church; - Marriage introduces one into an ecclesial order, and creates rights and duties in the Church between the spouses and towards their children; - Since marriage is a state of life in the Church, certainty about it is necessary (hence the obligation to have witnesses); - The public character of the consent protects the "I do" once given and helps the spouses remain faithful to it. 1632 So that the "I do" of the spouses may be a free and responsible act and so that the marriage covenant may have solid and lasting human and Christian foundations, preparation for marriage is of prime importance. The example and teaching given by parents and families remain the special form of this preparation. The role of pastors and of the Christian community as the "family of God" is indispensable for the transmission of the human and Christian values of marriage and family, and much more so in our era when many young people experience broken homes which no longer sufficiently assure this initiation: It is imperative to give suitable and timely instruction to young people, above all in the heart of their own families, about the dignity of married love, its role and its exercise, so that, having learned the value of chastity, they will be able at a suitable age to engage in honorable courtship and enter upon a marriage of their own. So, we see that marriage preparation consists of more than meeting with a priest and a Pre-Cana Day, but includes the formation that young people receive in their families and in the Church. Since the bride and groom publicly state their promises to enter into marriage, normally a Catholic must enter into a marriage before a priest or deacon (or bishop) and at least two witnesses. Please check with me or another priest or deacon if you have any questions about this. An engaged couple should please contact a priest or deacon soon after announcing their engagement. Please also check with a priest or deacon if you are Catholic and have been married outside the Church. The marriage can be convalidated.

- Fr. Von Deeke

The Third Sorrowful Mystery

THE CROWNING WITH THORNS

1. Pilate asks, "Are You a king?" Jesus answers: "I am a King, but My

kingdom is not of this world."

2. In the praetorium, the soldiers place an old purple robe on Jesus in

mockery of His claim to be a king.

3. They fashion a crown out of thorns, and forcefully press it down upon

His head.

4. In His bound hands they place a reed, as a sceptre, in mockery of His

kingship.

5. Kneeling before Him in derision, they spit on Him, and cry out: "Hail,

King of the Jews!"

6. Taking the reed from His hand they strike Him on the head, driving the

thorns more deeply into His scalp.

7. Pilate brings Jesus before the people, hoping His pitiful sight will soften

them: "Behold the man!"

8. Their response: "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!"

9. Our Blessed Lord submitted to this terrible humiliation to make

reparation for our pride.

10. Father, by the merits of this painful humiliation, have mercy on us and

on the whole world.

Spiritual Fruit: Let us pray that the Lenten season will give us the opportunity to

pray and sacrifice more in order to grow closer to the Risen Christ.

“UNPLANNED” at Waterloo Cinema this weekend Unplanned is the inspiring true story of one woman’s journey of transformation. All Abby Johnson ever wanted to do was help women. As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, she was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions and counseled countless women about their reproductive choices. Her passion surrounding a woman’s right to choose even led her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in. Until the day she saw something that changed everything, a baby fighting for its life. This led Abby Johnson to join her former enemies at 40 Days For Life and become one of the most ardent pro-life speakers in America. Abby was a woman who was deeply involved in Planned Parenthood until she saw the truth. She left Planned Parenthood and now speaks out on behalf of life. Because of the content and nature of the abortion industry, the MPAA has rated this movie "R" and it is not suitable for younger viewers. Scenes that expose the truth about abortion are difficult to watch, both the procedure itself and the bloody "normal recovery" for a woman who uses the RU486 abortion pill. Parents are advised to see it first and consider watching and discussing it with older children. Tickets available at Waterloo Cinema: Saturday, March 30: 10:00 AM, 12:20, 2:40, 5:00, 7:20, 9:40 PM Sunday, March 31: 12:30, 2:50, 5:10, 7:30 PM Let us pray for all victims of abortion: children, mothers, fathers, families, and friends, that those innocents who have lost their lives may be with the Lord, and that those involved may turn to God and experience his mercy and forgiveness, as we share God’s love with all.
