Faith in Action: Interiorizing the Faith written by Dr. Edward Sri
Knowing the truths of the Faith is not enough. Someone who memorizes the Scriptures and understands the Catechism is not necessarily close to God. Certainly, we must understand the Catholic faith intellectually, but we also must allow God’s revelation to penetrate our hearts and shape our lives.
Mary is a model for this “interiorization” of the Faith. When Mary witnessed the amazing events surrounding the birth of her Son, the Scriptures tell us that she “kept all these things, pondering them in her heart” (Lk 2:19). On a basic level, the notion of keeping and pondering in the heart indicated that she sought to understand the meaning of the mysterious events at the dawn of the New Covenant era (see Gen 37:11, Dan 4:28).
But the phrase tells us something more. In the Psalms and Wisdom literature of the Bible, to keep and ponder in the heart implies not just a correct interpretation of God’s words and deeds, but a faithful living out of God’s revelation. For example, Psalm 119:11 says, “I have laid up thy word in my heart that I might not sin against thee.” Here, the Psalmist ponders God’s Word in his heart so that he may live according to that Word.
Therefore, we learn from Mary that it is not enough to know God’s Word intellectually. We must interiorize God’s Word and allow it to shape our lives. We need to take God’s Word to prayer, meditate on it, and apply it to the situations we face each day. We, like Mary, should keep the Word of God and ponder it in our hearts, so that we may walk in his ways.
Action Step: This week, select a passage from the book of Psalms, and ponder each phrase slowly and prayerfully. Let God’s Word speak to you!
