St. Anne Parish Mission Prayer Almighty Father, we thank you for calling us to live together as the family of St. Anne Catholic Church. Generations ago you lit the fire of faith through a mission to the children of immi-grants in a small stone church. Lord Jesus, we ask you to help us to follow you and humbly serve you by welcoming and serving those most in need of your love. Fill us with your Holy Spirit and light our path. Keep us attentive to your word in the Scriptures and help us to recognize Christ in the breaking of the bread. May the lives we lead be our offering of love to you. We make our prayer in unity with all the Saints, especially through the intercession of St. Anne the grandmother of Jesus. Amen.

THE CHOSEN REMNANT Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testa-ment prophets. He speaks in today’s first reading of im-pending judgment. But the Lord will leave a “remnant” in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity. Paul’s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too self-confident, he says, too sure of themselves. He ad-monishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have. Today’s Gospel comprises the open-ing of Jesus’ “Great Sermon.” As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beati-tudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God’s king-dom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, per-secution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here speaking to God’s chosen “remnant.”

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — You humble of the land, seek justice and humility, and the Lord will be your protection (Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13). Psalm — Blessed are the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs! (Psalm 146). Second Reading — God chose the weak of the world, those who count for nothing, so that whoever boasts should boast in the Lord (1 Corinthians 1:26-31). Gospel — Jesus taught from the mountain: Blessed are the poor in spirit (Matthew 5:1-12a).

Meals for seminarians For the past seven years Little Rock area parishes have volunteered to provide supper every Tuesday for the seminarians and those discerning their call to the priest-hood at the diocesan formation house. Over time this pro-ject has become a concrete way for seminarians and dis-cerners to experience the Catholic community’s encour-agement and support of their vocation. St. Anne will pro-vide the formation house meals every Tuesday in Febru-ary. We need three or four cooks who will prepare supper for the ten seminarians and deliver it to the formation house at Holy Souls Church, Little Rock. If you want to help please phone the parish office as soon as possible.

Mexican Consulate Representatives Representatives from the Mexican Consulate will come to the MLV center on Wed.
