PARISH AND COMMUNITY LIFE

Stewardship Prayer Dear Heavenly Father,

My parish is composed of people like me; I help make it what it is.

It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them.

It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to many causes,

if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship,

if I invite and bring them.

It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith,

and a parish with a noble spirit, if I, who make it what it is,

am filled with these same things. Therefore, with Your help, O God,

I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all things that I want my parish to be.

Amen. Author unknown

Join us for our next BUILD Night of Worship on Friday, October 23rd, from 7-8:30 pm. Come enjoy fellowship and worship, with a Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration and live music. All are welcome.

What is Eucharistic Adoration? Simply put, Eucharistic Adoration is an opportunity to be in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. What could be better than that?! As Catholics, we believe that Christ is truly present in the Eucharist: body, blood, soul, and divinity. In Adoration, the Eucharist is exposed in a special vessel called a monstrance, and placed on the altar for us to adore and worship. It is a very powerful and intimate way to pray! You can gaze upon the Lord face to face and offer prayer and thanksgiving, say a rosary or Chaplet of Divine Mercy, read scripture, journal, or just be still, listen, and keep Him company. What an incredible opportunity to grow in relationship and love with the Lord!

FILIPINO MINISTRY Have we thought how challenging this unprecedented time is? The Filipino Community through the St. Angela Merici-Filipino Ministry managed to get in touch & work continuously it’s goal & mission. As a ministry, we work on evangelization, stewardship & socialization, we all did these with the strong -willed determination, cooperation & solidarity of the members coupled with the availability of technology. We communicated thru e-mails, messenger, text messages, sometimes Fb & we do our meeting & prayer thru zoom just like most of us. Evangelization-from the time of lockdown, March 19,2020 up to the present, every night@ 9 pm, our families pray together the rosary, novena & prayer requests & intentions from everyone. During our nightly prayer we involve the participation of our young children recite the rosary, learn the scripture associated with the mysteries of the rosary. Each member of the “prayer warrior” take turns to lead the rosary every night including some youth. Stewardship-more SAM Fil members are stepping up to serve as ushers, lectors ,sacristans & mass captains during weekdays & weekend masses, also some as baptism hosts. Socialization-we celebrate virtually birthdays, graduations, anniversaries & other special days thru messenger & zoom.

We continue to actively participate in church activities observing the CDC guidelines during this Covid time

TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.

It is a rare person who enjoys paying taxes. But they exist. My dad was one of

them. The son of immigrant parents, he was grateful for the success he was able to achieve in the United States and felt privileged to contribute to sustaining the work of our country. Refusing to pay taxes is a legiti-mate, if largely unproductive, act of civil disobedience when you believe that the taxing authority is ex-ploitive or oppressive. But the hypocrites who posed the question to Jesus about paying the tax to Caesar were neither grateful for the Romans nor interested in protesting against them. They simply wanted to trap Jesus. And as usual it backfired on them! When Jesus said “repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar” He meant that if you accept Caesar’s coins and what it purchases you owe him a return. The payment of the tax was essential for living peacefully as a subject of the Roman Empire and exercising the rights associated with that status. But these self-appointed guardians of Jewish religious law were concerned with their religious status and resented Jesus’ challenges to them. Thwarted in their efforts, one wonders if they possibly heard or understood the more indicting half of Jesus’ response—repay to God what is God’s. As we draw this passage into our own life we can consider the coins we possess. Jesus recognizes, and the Church affirms, that we properly live in the world. It is reasonable to want to live peace-fully, to exercise the rights of citizenship, to ease our way through difficult circumstances. We want to “belong”, to enjoy security, and to provide for those we love. We need coins with the picture of past presidents on it. But do we possess any coins imprinted with the im-age of God that we can return to God? We ourselves bear the image of God through our creation, though sometimes we forget what that means. Like the Thessalonians in today’s Second Reading we have been loved and chosen by God; given great graces. The very best way we can repay God for all that we have received is to return our lives by building up the kingdom of God through love, compassion, forgiveness, and acceptance wherever we are. If you were able to empty your pockets and place all your coins on the table, which pile would be higher—those stamped U.S. Mint or those with you as the image of God, accumulated by living faithful to the purpose for which you were created? With which do you really feel more secure navigating through life? It is a rare person who enjoys paying taxes. May God give you the wisdom to be grateful, and to trust that returning to Him all that you have received is a joyful privilege. kathleen⁺AMDG⁺

TAKE IT TO HEART It is not enough for a Christian to condemn evil, cowardice, lies, and use of force, hatred, and oppression. He must at all times be a

witness to and defender of justice, goodness, truth, freedom, and love. He must never tire of claiming these values as a right both for himself and others.

–Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko (1947-1984) Diocesan priest who spiritually and actively supported the Solidarity union movement and was killed by Polish security police.

The Texas Attorney issued a related consumer alert in regards to these scammers. In an effort to minimize the impact of these fraudulent actions, pastors are encouraged to remind their member-ship that priests/churches would never make such appeals to the parish community. Please ad-vise parishioners to notify the church office immediately if they receive any unfamiliar donation requests.

FAMILY LIFE MINISTRY QUILTPLUS MINISTRY

Have you ever wondered when quilting started and how it has evolved into a popular sewing craft today?

“The art of quilting took a big leap forward in the mid-1800s with the development of the sewing machine. Though the early machines were hand or foot activated, they eliminated the need to hand stitch a quilt. As time passed, quilts evolved to become more decorative or colorful, often using all new fabrics of similar weight and feel rather than a hodge-podge of reused materials. During WWI, women were urged to make quilts to save the blankets for the men fighting over seas. WWII

saw quilting as a way to raise funds for the Red Cross with the creation of signature quilts….. What are we creating that will become history for our family, for our community, ...…..?”

One wonderful way is making “Prayer Quilts” for our parishioners who are needing spiritual comfort and warmth! Be a part of this ministry to become history for the St. Angela Merici Parish Community!!!

The history of quilts began long before European settlers arrived in the New World. People in nearly every part of the world had used padded fabrics for clothing, bedding, and even armor. With the arrival of the English and Dutch settlers in North America, quilting took on a new life and flourished.

“The term "quilt" comes from the Latin culcita, meaning a stuffed sack. The word has come to have 2 meanings. It is used as noun, meaning the 3-layer stitched bedcovering. It is also used as a verb, meaning the act of stitching through the 3 layers to hold them together.”

(https://www.quilting-in-america.com/History-of-Quilts.html) (https://www.ablockaway.com/long-history-of-quilting-explored.htm)

Quilting can be traced back as far as ancient Egypt, though there are quilts found late BC and early AD years. In the 12th century, it became more evident when the Crusaders would wear quilted garments and by using them under their armor, they would serve as comfort, protection, and warmth. “Evidence of many more quilt works were found in Europe throughout time and many, though described as obviously beautiful works, were usually made to be used. One of the earliest decorative quilts made in the 14th century is the Tristan Quilt. Made in Sicily, it is one of the oldest surviving quilts in the world. You can find a section in the V&A Museum in London, England and another in the Bargello Palace in Florence, Italy.”

As a craft, quilting came to America with the Puritans. “Quilts were made in those early days in America to serve a purpose, to provide warmth at night and to cover doors and windows to help reduce cold. Quilts were functional, with little time for women to create decorative quilts. Often times money and other resources were limited so quilts were made with what was available, often old clothing no longer needed by family members. Worn quilts were patched together or cut apart to make another usable quilt. Those early quilts tell the history not only of early American quilting, but also the early history of the country.”

Whole Cloth Quilt— Popular in the early 1800s. Beauty of the quilts is in the stitching and cording.

Appliqué Quilt—Popular in the mid 1700’s peaking popularity around 1850. Since fab-rics were expensive, only the wealthy could afford to buy them to use as quilt appliqués.

“When the Amish settlers started to populate the farmlands of Pennsylvania and the Midwest, they did not quilt and came with the feather beds that they had used in Europe. Over time, though, they adopted the ways of the earlier settlers around them, developing the distinctive Amish quilt style that we know of today. Many variations of the quilt were developed during these early times to adapt to the conditions of their lives in early America. One was the style of a comforter where the layers are tied to keep the layers from shifting or bunching. Another was a summer quilt which was created without the warm middle material, resulting in a lighter quilt for the warmer days.”
