Registration open for our Middle School and High School youth ministry. We are committed to helping your teens grow in faith no matter the current circumstances.

The EDGE is a vibrant middle school youth ministry program of relevant and interactive catechesis for our young people which follows the catechetical components put forth by our Archdiocese. The program - which is for youth in grades 6–8 will provide opportunities for gathering together for prayer, learning the Scriptures, small group discussions, community service, fun social events and always…FOOD! The program - for youth in grades 9–12 will provide opportunities for teens to learn about the Catholic faith, while spending time with other young people who strive to live an active Catholic life. Each week will consist of music, teachings based on the faith themes put forth by the Archdiocese, small group pro-cessing time, food, games, prayer and fellowship. We hope that all youth, from both public and private schools, will join us in growing their faith answering the call to be disciples of Jesus Christ. In this way, they will strengthen the "young" Church of St. Angela Merici. Taking our teens beyond Confirmation! For all high school teens who have been confirmed and want to go deeper! We have elements of further catechesis mixed with giving back and being His hands and feet. They must register with Faith Formation and will attend LifeTeen as part of the Beyond program.

Spiritual Life

Christian spirituality is not one dimension of the Christian life, it IS Christian life. For more information contact Kathleen Messina at [email protected]

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Henry in California submitted a helpful hint to Heloise that appeared in last Friday’s newspaper about preventing weeds from growing in his garden. He said that he places about three sheets of newspaper on the on the ground between the rows, wets them down with a heavy soaking of water, then puts a thin layer of straw

down on the newspaper. Evidently, the newspaper keeps weeds from growing between the rows. During COVID many of us have been doing a lot of gardening. When sharing tales and produce with our friends, the challenge of weeds is always part of the conversation. Interestingly, weeds are right up there with wheat in Jesus’ story in today’s Gospel. In His explanation of the parable to His disciples Jesus explained that the wheat are those who know that they need Him, hear His word and live according to it, whereas the weeds are those who deny Him and try to destroy the faith of others. He tells them there will be a sorting of good and evil at the end of time, but it is God who does the sorting, God who judges. So Jesus seems much less concerned about weeds than we are, and advises His listeners to leave them alone. Jesus’ parables intentionally are at one and the same time, timeless, familiar, and confounding. In our heightened awareness this year to our exterior and interior gardens, this parable may illuminate in a new way some fruit-producing truths for us. We can begin by admitting that, as weeds and wheat manifest themselves in human life, they exist in varying proportions within each of us. Try to listen to God’s message to you in this parable by reflecting on one or another of these questions: Are there weeds I’ve pulled too soon—thinking, for example, that anger is only bad, that a sinful church

cannot be redeemed, that a relationship that seems toxic is immune to saving love? How hard is it for me to tolerate ambiguity, to trust in the slow work of God, to believe

that all of creation is moving toward fulfillment in Christ? God didn’t make a mistake when He created weeds. They fertilize the soil, increase and

retain moisture, act as shelter, attract beneficial insects, and often are quite beautiful. Consider that weeds achieve the purpose for which God created them. How can the presence of weeds within me actually encourage and guide me in seeking God?

So let’s keep talking about weeds in our gardens and acknowledging the weeds in our life. But don’t let them obscure all that is beautiful, good, holy and thriving. Wet newspaper and straw may help our backyard gardens, but personal prayer, the sacraments and spiritual direction surely help us use everything in our lives to fulfill the purpose for which God created us. Praise and thanksgiving to God for all of creation! kathleen⁺AMDG⁺

TAKE IT TO HEART It is the Holy Spirit’s job to convict, God’s job to judge, and my

job to love. –Rev. Billy Graham William Franklin Graham Jr. (1918-2018) was an American evangelical preacher and an ordained Southern Baptist minister who became well-known internationally in the late 1940s. Like all of us, he moved through life with a mixture of weeds and wheat within him, and certainly had a complicated relationship with Catholics and Catholicism. Nonetheless, he was among the most influential Christian leaders of the 20th century and helped shape the worldview of a huge number of people who came from different backgrounds, leading them to find a relationship between the Bible and contemporary secular viewpoints.

PARISH AND COMMUNITY LIFE

Stewardship Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, My parish is composed of people like me;

I help make it what it is.

It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them.

It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to many causes,

if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship, if I invite and bring

them.

It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith,

and a parish with a noble spirit, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things.

Therefore, with Your help, O God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being

all things that I want my parish to be.

Amen.

Imposter priest email/texting scams In recent months, there have been numerous reports in Texas of in-dividuals impersonating a parish priest and soliciting do-nations – normally in the form of gift cards – from mem-bers of their congregation. The Texas Attorney issued a related consumer alert in regards to these scammers. In an effort to minimize the impact of these fraudulent actions, pastors are encouraged to remind their membership that priests/churches would never make such appeals to the parish community. Please ad-vise parishioners to notify the church office immediately if they receive any unfamil-iar donation requests.
