PARISH AND COMMUNITY LIFE
Stewardship Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, My parish is composed of people like me;
I help make it what it is.
It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them.
It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to many causes,
if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship,
if I invite and bring them.
It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith,
and a parish with a noble spirit, if I, who make it what it is,
am filled with these same things. Therefore, with Your help, O God,
I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all things that I want my parish to be.
Amen. Author unknown
REMEMBERING Fr. Bob Duggan, c.s.b with gratitude
Five years ago today, Fr. Bob Duggan, who served as a regular assistant at St. Angela Merici from 2010-2015, was born into eternal life. He came in our fledgling years, to say Mass on Tuesday’s at noon and on Sundays. At the time Fr. Bob was serving at St. Basil’s Novitiate in Sugarland and had time to participate in our parish life. Today is also St. Francis of Assisi’s feast day and the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A in which our Gospel challenges us all to be good tenants who care for the vineyard entrusted to us by the landowner. Jesus forcefully warned the scribes and elders that they would be replaced if they failed in their responsibilities. We can be especially consoled today in our continuing grief to have had such loving care in our vineyard from Fr. Bob. He prayed with us and taught us. He sat in our kitchens and we in his. He could with equal ease talk about anything and stand at our side in silence. We witnessed his pride and humility being challenged and his essential kindness and gentleness in response. He heard our confessions and we heard his. We loved being in the vineyard with Fr. Bob. We are grateful and blessed that he remains in our hearts. Kathleen

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The Church rightly reserves each Sunday, the Lords Day, for celebrating the paschal mystery. It is the first and most holy day of all! As a result however, the memorials of the saints that fall on Sunday in a particular year give way to the Sunday feast. And so this
year the memorial of St. Francis of Assisi doesn’t appear on the Roman Calendar. Hopefully though, St. Francis receives a mention in homilies somewhere this year, because his life of loving faithful response to God was exact-ly the opposite of the tenants in today’s Gospel parable. In the parable Jesus told the chief priests and scribes about a landowner who planted a vineyard and made great efforts to insure a good harvest. Then the landowner left the vineyard to the care of tenants and went on a journey. At harvest time when the landowner sent his servants to obtain his produce, the tenants maltreated and killed not only the servants, but also the landowner’s son, hoping to acquire his inheritance. Reminiscent of the treatment of the prophets sent by God, and foretelling His own destiny, Jesus asked them “What will the owner of the vineyard to do those tenants when he comes?” The crux of the Gospel is that Jesus warns those who have re-sponsibility for tending God’s people they will be punished and replaced if they fail to honor the privileged mission of service they have been given. St. Francis of Assisi was from a prosperous family, but after experiencing a conversion, he renounced his frivolous life and embraced simplicity and poverty. Francis heard the words spo-ken to him from the Byzantine crucifix at the little chapel of San Damiano: “See to the repair of my house, which is falling into ruin.” Initially understanding the message literally, Francis spent several years restoring churches. Finally, he came to realize that his mission was not to rebuild churches, but to rebuild The Church itself, which was perilously close to falling apart and deeply in need of reform. St. Francis was scorned and branded impractical for preaching to Muslims, combat-ting heresy, and modelling the Gospel message of peace and universal love of all of creation. But the power of his example earned St. Francis the distinction of being regarded as the “Second Christ.” Jesus challenged the chief priests and scribes for failing in their responsibilities as caretakers of the people of God, especially for the violence they inflicted on anyone who challenged them. We are all—lay persons, reli-gious, and clergy—tenants entrusted with the vineyard. Like those in the parable and those at the time of St. Fran-cis of Assisi, we get into trouble when we forget that we are caretaker tenants working for the owner of the vine-yard. Where in your life are you an instrument of division or subtle violence rather than of peace? What are you clinging to that is not yours or claiming that you know is false? Where are you unwilling to risk ridicule in order to speak and do what God calls you to? Hear our own San Damiano crucifix calling down to you—See to the re-pair of my house, which is falling into ruin. How will you respond? kathleen⁺AMDG⁺
TAKE IT TO HEART He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not
intending it if I do but keep His commandments. --John Henry Newman (1801-1890)
John Henry Newman was an English theologian and poet, first an Anglican priest and later a Catholic priest and cardinal. He has been called the “absent Father of Vatican II” because his writings on conscience, religious lib-erty, Scripture, the vocation of lay people, the relation of Church and State, and other topics were extremely influential in the shaping of the Council’s documents. Although Newman was not always understood or appreci-ated, he steadfastly preached the Good News by word and example.

Imposter priest email/texting scams In recent months, there have been numerous reports in Texas of individuals impersonating a parish priest and soliciting donations – normally in the form of gift cards – from members of their congregation. The Texas Attorney issued a related consumer alert in regards to these scammers. In an effort to minimize the impact of these fraudulent actions, pastors are encouraged to remind their member-ship that priests/churches would never make such appeals to the parish community. Please ad-vise parishioners to notify the church office immediately if they receive any unfamiliar donation requests.
