Legion of Mary’s Travelling Madonna

The St. Angela Mreici legion of Mary s looking for good Catholic homes to visit. Her presence in your home, along with intercessory prayers to her, will enrich your family's lives. Her son cannot deny His mother any request. If you would like to have her come and stay with you, please contact Jane, 741-9359, Joan, 839-0694, or, Mary, 831-7537. She usually stays for 2 weeks, depending on requests for her. Thank you.

REMEMBER THAT JANUARY IS THE MONTH OF THE HOLY CHILDHOOD OF JESUS!

CHRISTMAS THANKS I want to thank all of you who were so kind to me this past Christmas; the many who sent cards and kind wishes, all of you who sent up cookies, pastries, and confections of sundry types and kinds, and all who were generous and thoughtful enough to make some other kind of gift. I tried to thank as many of you as I could individually, but now I would like to do it collectively, and, at the same time, to impart my best Christmas blessings to you all. THE PASTOR’S HIP (part II) This coming Thursday is when I submit to the knife and have my hip replaced. I ask your prayers, and knowing how kind and good you are, I’m confident that you will supply them. I hope to be back here in ten days or so, but I’ll be somewhat limited in what I’ll be able to do. I hope to have coverage while I’m gone, although, as I mentioned last week, there will be some disruptions. and so, I’m an-nouncing that next Sunday, the Masses here will be covered by… …CROSS CATHOLIC OUTREACH The priests who represent this Catholic charitable organization have been here before, and I sched-uled to have them come to our parish several months ago (anticipating that I would be in DC for the an-nual Pro-Life March). This year, Fr. Paul Farin, representing Cross Catholic Outreach, will visit us next weekend, covering for me, and making his appeal on behalf of the poor and needy of the world who are served by this worthy organization. Please welcome him in your charity! HAPPY BIRTHDAY… …to Dominican Sr. Marie Bernadette of France, who, as I just saw on the internet, is celebrating her 110th birthday (and 90 years in the Dominican Order). An actuary once told me that nobody in the Unit-ed States lives longer than women in religious life; apparently it obtains in other countries, too. There’s much to be said for a life of prayer and self-sacrifice! QUIZ-A-CATHOLIC Let’s dig deep into the ancient, pre-Vatican II past of the Church and see whether or not you can conjure up the names of these extremely obscure items that are no longer in use (if you get any of these right, you probably need to get out more!): 1. A low candlestick with a short handle held at a bishop’s side when he read the Gospel. 2. A gift from the Sultan, a fan made of ostrich plumes and carried in papal processions. 3. The platform in front of the altar on which the priest stands. 4. A leafy branch used for sprinkling holy water. 5. The title given to the one who takes the narrator’s part in the reading of the Passion. 6. A flat canopy of wood which is hung over the altar and #3. 7. An ornamental curtain hung behind the altar, attached either to the wall or the canopy. 8. The four “minor” orders, received in the early stages of seminary training. 9. The three “Major” orders, received in the last stages of seminary training. 10. The platform and chair upon which the pope sat while carried in solemn procession.

What a beautiful evening! Thanks to our won-

derful, generous fellow parishioners and the de-

lectable dinner provided by Don Krause and

family we rang in the New Year with flair!

The March for Life Pilgrims, the Knights of

Columbus and the Ladies Auxiliary wish to

thank all who attended our dinner celebration.

Please keep our Pilgrims in your prayers as we make our final preparations and travel to D.C. later this month to witness to the sanctity of eve-ry human life. In the church lobby we have avail-able Novena prayers to be said for our March for Life Pilgrims. If you begin the Novena prayer on Jan. 19th, you will finish on the day we will be marching in D.C. Thank you so much!!

Annual Respect Life Mass/Cathedral Basilica

If you are unable to attend the March for Life in Washington, DC, please consider attending a beautiful Life liturgy at our Cathedral Basilica next Saturday, the 21st, at 9:30 am. The Mass is followed by an optional Prayer Procession to the nearby Planned Parenthood facility in the West End. The rosary will be prayed along the way and in front of the facility. Instead of the proces-sion, you may remain in the Cathedral to say the rosary.

Cross Catholic Outreach, Rev. Paul Farin Next Weekend, January 21/22

Father Paul Farin of Cross Catholic Outreach will be visiting our parish next weekend to speak at all the Masses on behalf of the poor in devel-oping countries. Cross Catholic Outreach was founded to create a meaningful link between par-ishes in America and the priests and nuns work-ing in the Church overseas in the Caribbean, Af-rica, Asia, Central and South America.

The 2016 St. Vincent de Paul Society Annual Report for St. Angela Merici

In an effort to be good stewards of the contributions made to the SVDP Society, we continue to make home visits in teams of two Vincentians to assess the needs of our clients. From January 1 to December 31, our members made 215 home visits. In addition to the home

visits, many contacts are made by phone. There were 824 persons helped by single or multiple visits to a household.

There were 523 Vincentian hours involved in those home visits plus the many phone hours re-quired.

Assistance was given to 74 families to avoid Laclede disconnection. Assistance was given to 173 families to avoid Ameren disconnection. Assistance was given to 4 families to avoid MO-AM water disconnection. Through the Beds for Neighbors program we were able to get beds for 13 families. The LDI prescription program enabled us to help 4 families with medications. In addition to utility assistance we were able to give people Thrift Store vouchers to help with

clothing and household furnishings. We were able to get these vouchers because of the terrific response on April 2/3 when the SVDP truck was in St. Angela’s parking lot, collecting clothing and household goods.

We continue to be one of the largest contributors to the TEAM food pantry with our monthly Food Drives. We also take food boxes to some of our clients, including the Thanksgiving baskets donated by the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and the Pillars Nursing Home staff.

Because of the very generous response to the Advent Giving Tree, we were able to give gifts to many of our families and to the Perpetual Help Center where they are greatly appreciated.

In 2016, we disbursed $31,118 donated by St. Angela Merici parishioners in the parish envelope, the brown envelopes at the back of church, the Thanksgiving Mass collection and the Men’s Club Pizza Sales. We were also able to utilize funds from other resources such as, the Hardee’s Rise-n-shine fund raiser, the SVDP North District, the Marian Foundation, and “twinning” with other parishes.

We are very grateful to the parishioners at St. Angela Merici for their financial contri-butions, the Food Drive donations, the Advent Giving tree gifts, and the Spring clothing and household collection. We appreciate your support in this ministry.
