David is helping people get more from their active lifestyle. Lead Designer across TomTom Sports’ growing range of wearable fitness products. He’s been peppering jokes and philosophy into design practice for years at Nokia, Microsoft and now TomTom.

The Virtues of Endurance: UX Design for Sport Wearables

Our users are preoccupied with being better. Endurance is their shared value, an end in itself and virtue we’ve latched on to in Design for sports wearables at TomTom. Our interfaces humbly ask to be secondary, and work best expecting no attention spared from the effort at hand. "Endurance Design" imagines each sprint as a marathon, a flow where excellence can simply begin with exercise. It reminds us how and why we’re used. Sharing these design principles, practical strategies, exercises and best practices driving TomTom’s next wave of wearable fitness products.

Using Data to Drive Strategy Change

In a world immersed in sports data, it is important to tell the difference between data overload and actionable data. The role of Performance analyst has evolved greatly over the years and with a view of complimenting the core skill set of the analyst, we at Munster Rugby setabout embracing data analytics in order to provide a deeper insight into performance outcomes and measurements. In conjunction with Rugbyanalyser54, we set about designing a data set or coding structure that would measure all elements of possession with or without the ball in order to “Paint a Picture”.

Data Driven Athlete Recovery

With the explosion of ways in which to capture performance data on our athletes and ways to gain insight into the loads being placed on them, are we taking the appropriate measures to understand not only what is being placed on our athletes but how they’re responding to it.   While recovery is always an important topic within sport, is the approach we’re taking with our athletes always the most appropriate and advantageous to enhance subsequent performance?
