A mother’s work is never done.
Vivian and I were walking in the mall recently and ran into a woman
that Vivian had known from work. They were catching up about life
in the past year and the woman made a comment about knowing why
she couldn’t lose weight. “I have three granola bars in my purse right
now.” Now if I had three granola bars on me, you’d know that I
couldn’t lose weight because I’m constantly snacking. In fact, I’ve
probably never had three granola bars on me because by the "me I
grabbed the third one, one of the first two would be gone (it’s like
magic I don’t even understand). But that was exactly her point. It
wasn’t that she was constantly snacking throughout the day. See, this
woman we were talking to was a mother. In the busyness of her
morning she would get the kids ready, get herself ready, and by the
"me she remembered she hadn’t eaten breakfast, they were headed
out the door. Her quick fix was to grab a granola bar and toss it in her
purse to eat later, but later never came. When the hustle and bustle
of ge,ng everyone ready for the day was over there was s"ll… the
day! While we could all admit that this “model” of living is not a
sustainable one, the reality is we all know people living like this right
now and may ourselves struggle with it at "mes.
A mother’s work is never done.
I s"ll remember an interview I heard several years ago of John Max-
well. It was at a Chris"an leadership conference I a3ended. When an
author of several books on leadership speaks to leaders you can bet it
will be good. One sentence s"cks out in my memory while all the rest
have faded. I’ve repeated it several "mes, in several instances, to
many people in different states. Maxwell, in that interview with
thousands of ministers, elders and church leaders listening said,
“Never let your work for God outweigh God’s work in you.” How
true that is for leaders who can get so focused on their call that
they neglect their health and wellness. How true that is for
mothers (and fathers, too!) who can get so focused on their fam-
ily that they forget to bow their knees “before the Father, from
whom every family in heaven and on earth is named” (Eph.
3:14b-15).
The Lord’s work is never done with us un"l we reach perfec"on.
This goes beyond the health that can be helped with granola
bars to spiritual and emo"onal wellness that comes from being
close to God. Would your priori"es show that God’s work in you
is more important than all the things God has for you to do in-
cluding raising up godly children? I’m coming to realize how
important self-care is. You cannot give others what you do not
have yourself. If you want to be there for your children, your
spouse, your friends, your congrega"on, you’ll have to take care
of your rela"onship with the Lord first. To priori"ze anything
above this bond will not only hurt us, but will damage those rela-
"onships that get above God. We all want to give wise counsel,
but how connected are we to our Counselor, the Holy Spirit?
We all want to have the right words, but how oBen do we dive
deep into the Word? I s"ll reflect on moments when I saw my
mom reading her Bible before her children were normally
awake. Children need a mother’s love and help, but they also
need a mother who knows the love of her Savior and where her
help comes from.
“Never let your work for God outweigh God’s work in you.” -

SpringBreak
By Vicki Gough
What a wonderful outpouring of support for our Spring Break
lunch program. We opened the fellowship hall April 3-7 from
11:00am—noon to feed children. We averaged 12 children a day
and delivered to 5 more. While we had hoped to feed more, it
was a great opportunity to visit and get to know be3er some of
the children in our community. Thanks goes to those who helped
prepare, serve and clean up, and/or provide items for the meals:
Vicki Gough, Talisha Jones, Carol Cooper, Toby and Debby Dul-
worth, Pastor Aus"n and Vivian Sco3, Shirley Orazine, Mary Cun-
ningham, Linda Ryan, Georgia Davis, Nancy Graves, Sara Vaughn,
Sondra Dunn, and Freda Wagner. -
Some of my favorite Easter memories growing up come from East-
er egg hunts. My family made a big deal out of dying eggs, it was
an all evening affair. Pictures will prove that if you were not big
enough to reach the table, you just sat on top of it to join in all the
fun. I am not sure if growing up I was more excited for the process
of dying eggs, or knowing that the next day all of my cousins and I
would get to hunt them. There is just something about the energy
that builds up in a room of children anxiously awai"ng to hear the
word, “Go!”
It was beyond refreshing to see that same joy on so many chil-
dren’s faces Saturday, April 15. LaCenter Chris"an was able to
help host LaCenter’s city Easter egg hunt this year. There were
several volunteers to sca3er the 4,000 eggs across the park. By
noon the basketball courts and sidewalks were lined with children
of all ages, clinging to their baskets, as they looked out at the sea
of eggs anxiously awai"ng the word, “Go!” Though it took nearly
an hour and a half to sca3er and hide the eggs, it felt like seconds
for all of the kids to gather them. All of them keeping their eyes
wide open for the two golden or two sequined eggs in their age
group, since those led to prizes! The city had large prizes for each
age group, and the church prepared two prize baskets per age
group.
While we had several volunteers to aide in hiding the eggs and
keeping the hunt running smoothly, we had just as many to be
helping hands in the church’s fellowship hall se,ng up refresh-
ments. From cupcakes and cookies to sandwiches and chips, the
church was ready to serve. There was a steady stream of guests
coming in from the Easter egg hunt to collect prizes, grab a plate,
and simply enjoy community fellowship. It was wonderful to see
so many tables full of people stopping to enjoy one another’s
company. With the turnout from this year, I can only hope that
the opportunity to host next year’s Easter egg hunt will present
itself to LaCenter Chris"an again. -
