VERY IMPORTANT PARKING LOT NEWS PLEASE READ!!

At every school, in every district, there is one major complaint... The school parking lot. YouTube has made people famous by their rants about their school parking lot. Sadly, the parking lot at Linwood/Sojourner is no different. Parents, we continue to have issues during drop off and pick up time in the parking lot. I recognize that there is a lot of congestion and that it can cause

stress, but I need you to be calm. We have parents upset at each other and our staff, and simply being unsafe. Linwood/Sojourner is a large campus with many children. That means there are a lot of students to get in and out of the building on a daily basis. Linwood Avenue is an extremely busy road backs up quickly for a variety of reasons. It takes a lot of time and patience to get everyone in and out of our little parking lot.

1. PULL FORWARD!! Please pull up as far as you can. DO NOT stop at the front door to let your child out. It just backs everything up onto Linwood Avenue.

2. DO NOT get out of your car and then let your child out. If your child needs help getting out of the car in the morning, please find a place to park.

3. Please set a good example for the children with your behavior.

4. PULL FORWARD!! Please!!

5. If you live within a bus service area, your child is welcome to take the school bus. This would alleviate you having to come get them. You might also consider parking in the surrounding church parking lots and walking to and from your car. We also have a crossing guard/Safety Patrol to assist you crossing Linwood Avenue.

6. There should be ONLY ONE line of cars. When you create a 2nd line, then NO cars can pull out or through the parking lot.

7. PULL FORWARD!! AS FAR AS YOU CAN!!

It is only in working together that this issue will become better. If you would like to volunteer to help guide traffic, I will HAPPILY train and give you a vest, a flag/sign, and my unending gratitude. Thank you for your care and concern for all of our students.

MARCH 2017

MARCH IS NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH!

Fruits and vegetables are a great source of vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. They can help children to grow and develop, increase their vitality and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Encourage children to eat vegetables and fruits by making it fun. Provide healthy ingredients and let kids help in preparation, based on their age and skills. Kids may try foods they avoided in the past if they help make them.

Kid-Friendly Veggies and Fruits 1. Smoothie creations. Blend fat-free or low-fat yogurt with fruit pieces and crushed

ice. Use fresh, frozen, or canned fruits (try bananas, berries, peaches, and/or pineapple). If you freeze the fruit first, you can skip the ice!

2. Delicious dippers. Whip up a quick dip for veggies with yogurt and seasonings such as herbs or garlic. Serve raw vegetables like broccoli, carrots, or cauliflower. Fruit chunks go great with a yogurt and cinnamon or vanilla dip.

3. Frosty fruits. Frozen treats are bound to be popular in the warm months. Just put fresh fruits such as melon chunks in the freezer. Make “popsicles” by inserting sticks into peeled bananas and freezing.

4. Bugs on a log. Use celery, cucumber or carrot sticks as the log and add peanut butter. Top with dried fruits such as raisins, cranberries or cherries, depending on what bugs you want!

5. Homemade Trail Mix. Use your favorite nuts and dried fruits, such as unsalted peanuts, cashews, walnuts or sunflower seeds mixed with dried apples, pineapple, cherries, apricots, or raisins. Add whole-grain cereals to the mix, too.

6. Personalized pizzas. Set up a pizza-making station in the kitchen. Use whole-wheat English muffins, bagels, or pita bread as the crust. Have tomato sauce, low-fat cheese, and cut-up vegetables or fruits for toppings. Let kids choose their own favorites. Then pop the pizzas into the oven to warm.

Go to www.ChooseMyPlate.gov for more hints and information.

North Clackamas opens enrollment to school choice Applications accepted until March 31

After a successful open enrollment period last year, North Clackamas is opening its doors again to students from outside district or school boundaries for the 2017-18 school year. Allowing transfers across school boundaries offers school choice to current students residing in our district. Over the past four years, Open Enrollment and Interdistrict Transfers combined have generated 130 students to the district (approximately $1,058,000 annually moving forward). This allows North Clackamas Schools to hire additional teachers.

There will be a total 300 openings available within the district’s elementary, middle and high schools beginning in the 2017-18 school year: • 50 openings each at Milwaukie, Clackamas and Putnam High Schools (Grades 9-11) • 25 openings at New Urban High School (Grades 9-12) • 20 openings at each of the two middle schools: Alder Creek and Rowe • 10 openings at each of seven elementary schools: Ardenwald (grades K-5 only), Bilquist (grades K-5 only), Happy Valley Elementary (grades K-4), Lewelling (grades K-5), Milwaukie Elementary (grades K-5), Oak Grove (grades K-5), and Whitcomb (grades K, 1, 2, 4 and 5).

The district is accepting open enrollment applications beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, March 1 until 5 p.m. on Friday, March 31, 2017. Families will receive notification of placement by May 1, 2017 for the 2017-18 school year. For questions, contact Judy Vigil at 503.353.1907 or go to www.nclack.k12.or.us/schoolchoice. Talented, caring and dedicated educators focus on students, inspiring and empowering them in a safe, supportive environment to provide a solid foundation and personal development and growth. Students can select learning experiences in combinations customized to meet their interests and needs. Offering a unique education experience in Oregon, North Clackamas is home to the largest professional-technical program in Oregon, high-demand bilingual schools, and Clackamas County’s first International Baccalaureate program. Students are seeing continuing expansion of more than 150 high school electives, 11 Right Brain Initiative schools, numerous advanced college credit offerings, magnet school options and dozens of sports and activities. “We believe we have a relevant and challenging curriculum,” said Superintendent Matt Utterback. “Our educators promote high expectations, cultural understanding, and productive study habits. We are setting the pace for education in Oregon and providing pathways to success for our students.” For additional information and FAQs, pick up an open enrollment flyer from a local participating school or go to the website at www.nclack.k12.or.us/schoolchoice.
