They have chosen to use SmartBall ® under license from Pure Technologies Ltd as a critical element in their pipeline leak detection program. A test inspection was performed in October 2008 to demonstrate the capability of SmartBall ® to detect leaks in an operational pipeline. Artificial leaks were created in the 10-inch gasoline pipeline. A leak of 1.9l/min was made known to Pure Technologies, a smaller leak of 1.1l/min was used as a ‘blind test’. Both artificial leaks were detected and located to within 3m of their true location over a total inspection length of 28km. This was despite the fact that the valve, that was opened slightly to represent the leak, was some distance from the pipeline. No natural leaks were present in the line. Leak rate estimation is an approximation based on calibration leaks and was found to be within ±15% of the measured rate at the test sites. CLH accepted the trail as successful proof of the tool’s capabilities and confirmed SmartBall ® as their preferred method of leak detection. Acoustic Log of 1.89l/min Leak
