2 Sports Leisure Vacations / March – April 2011

Just One Man’s OpinionWhat Does it Take to be a

Good Traveler? After 30+ years of traveling with folks

on the road, I have observed that travelers are divided up into many different “ p e r s o n a l i t i e s .” There are people who love having someone else do all the worrying and handling of details. There are travelers who, despite the

fact they are traveling in a group, prefer to enjoy their independence, making the most of free time and stuffing optional activities into their trip. Those are just two examples, there are many more.

At Sports Leisure Vacations, we have had a demographic we have focused on almost since day one. You may have noticed a lot of the folks who make up our clientele are mature travelers. Folks over 50, 60, 70, 80 or even 90 years young, who are soaking up the magnificence of seeing the world and learning about it along the way. You are not finished with life. Far from it, you are enriching each day. While we welcome people of all ages, we know many of the people who enjoy our trips will be seniors. That’s just fine with us.

CompromiseA little known secret is we have the best

demographic as our customers/travelers. You are people who appreciate and acknowledge a job well done, a kindness extended, a little extra consideration. I know many of our family make many compromises with their bodies to be able to travel. You ignore the bad knee or hip or leg and carry on. You deal with personal medical issues that often aren’t apparent to your Tour Director or even to other travelers. I have the greatest of admiration for those travelers. Not only do you help pay my rent, you exhibit a spirit many younger people would do well to emulate.

When you travel with a group, you make compromises. There are pluses and minuses. Someone handles the details. You often get to see and do things you wouldn’t have had the opportunity to enjoy if you had been traveling independently. There is safety and security in numbers. A Tour Director and an experienced staff stands at the ready to assist in case of emergency or just a missed connection in a snow storm.

On the down side, despite our expanding efforts to give you the independence many of you crave, some realities exist. You must leave when the group leaves, and generally follow a pre-determined itinerary. While we can tweak it a little on the road, sometimes even the best suggestion cannot be incorporated into the itinerary while on tour.

When you are flying on a crowded airplane, or traveling/dining/touring with 25-35 people on a motorcoach, there are other considerations to think about. The first, and perhaps most important is personal hygiene.

I remember a number of years ago, when a couple went on a short 3 day excursion to Seattle. They were nicely dressed, but it became apparent once we boarded the motorcoach at the Seattle airport these folks didn’t bathe on a daily basis, nor did they change clothing as often as most of us do. Perhaps my clue should have been when they showed up at the airport for a three day trip with just one tiny overnight bag between them. At the first stop, I took them aside and mentioned my concerns. They said they had no idea. A little shopping and a stop at the drug store for a couple of personal items and we were able to welcome them for the rest of the trip.

Former staff member Scott Farrell called in one day from Alaska to inform me one of the members of his group of eight taking a van tour (very close quarters) had a serious body odor problem. Ultimately, that one was a medical issue that couldn’t be resolved. We had to fly the gentleman and his wife home. Those are situations we as Tour Directors do not look forward to, but it comes with the territory.

In Consideration of Your Fellow Travelers

Recently, I received two tour evaluations addressing this very issue. Seems a couple had been on a tour where one of the passengers in the row in front of them chose to wear a very strong perfume. It caused an allergic reaction in one of the other travelers and was, according to the note, a serious issue for many on the tour. The second evaluation referred to a traveler who may have had an incontinence problem, and either had not or could not attend to it in a timely fashion. Of course, this was an issue for other travelers, who had to deal with the unpleasant odor.

These issues don’t come up often with our groups, but they are incredibly important. I respect the compromises you make to be able to travel, and I will support you, assist you and give you every consideration I can give. Ditto for my staff. Your responsibility is to be aware of personal sanitation, cleanliness and other related issues which might impact those you are traveling with. Remember, you may be ok with wearing the same shirt or blouse for three days, but it might not pass muster with the rest of your travel family.

Truly, this rambling is not directed at one or two, but at all who travel with us. The more considerate we are of each other, the more enjoyable our travels together will be. And that, is Just One Man’s Opinion.

Sports Leisure Vacations / March– April 2011 3

Clayton Placein 1761 with the “resort,” then a crude log bunkhouse, dating to 1766. Everyone who is anyone in US history has bathed there – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Robert E. Lee, right up to the present era to include the Clintons and Bushes (not at the same time, I hope).

Today, The Homestead is no longer crude. Far from it, in fact. A fire in 1901 razed the original lodge. The replacement was (and remains) a grand brick edifice offering all the luxuries and amenities of the era. Countless updates over the past century assures it upholds it’s reputation as not just the first, but also one of America’s finest resorts. Learn more at www.thehomestead.com.

This wonderful resort is featured in our late-spring Washington, DC and The Homestead package, scheduled for April 28-May 4. After four days of seeing all the wonders our nation’s capital has to offer, we’ll head to the hills for the last two nights. Your amenities include a credit to enjoy your choice of resort activities from a forest carriage ride to horseback riding; archery to fly fishing; falconry to mountain hiking. Oh yes, and you can still take the waters in the vintage 18th century pool house. Read the itinerary on pages 40-41 of the 2011 catalogue, find it online at www.sportsleisure.com or call the office for more information.

So now we’ve discovered the first and last, but what about the greatest resort? Most will agree that auspicious title must go to the venerable 5-star/5-diamond Greenbrier. Tucked away in the tiny village of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, The Greenbrier is also built around a naturally heated and “fragrant” mineral spring. As with

The Homestead, resort and spa activities abound, but they boast one very large historical difference. Buried below the resort is the once top-secret Cold War bunker, large enough to hide, protect and sustain the entire executive, legislative and judicial branches of our national government in the event of nuclear invasion. You can tour this, or visit the newest Greenbrier amenity, a Monte Carlo-style casino. So very civilized! Learn more at www.greenbrier.com.

This fine resort is featured in our autumn Rails, Trails and Music of West Virginia package, scheduled for October 19-26, hopefully timed to afford us the beauty of fall foliage in addition to all the tour’s great destinations and attractions. Read the full itinerary on page 56 of the 2011 catalogue, find it online at www.sportsleisure.com or call the office for more information.

I look forward to seeing you in “them thar hills” at one or both of these luxurious resorts later this year. I’ve visited each location numerous times in the past. As the tour planner and escort, I welcome your personal questions or comments. You can reach me at [email protected].

America’s First, Greatest and Last Resorts

Back when I was a kid, my first “real” job in the hospitality industry was working at Six Flags over Georgia. I was Reggie the Rat, park mascot. (Aren’t you impressed?) Immediately before the park’s exit was a hot dog stand called The Last Resort. I always thought that was a great name – one I might use if I ever become a restaurateur. Can’t you see it? Maybe it’s located in Key West, just to the left of the place where US 1 disappears into the surf. Sadly, I didn’t return to Six Flags the next summer. Warner Brothers bought controlling interest and I lost my job to Bugs Bunny. They told me I didn’t have quite the right build for the costume. ‘Bet you’ve never met anyone before who can honestly say he lost his job to a 6-foot-tall rabbit! Nowadays, this would be cause for a discrimination suit! The Last Resort didn’t return, either. It was replaced by a stand that sold pictures of people screaming their heads off as they began their drop down the coaster’s steepest hill. I still remember it fondly.

America’s first resort is a horse of an entirely different color. The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia, is nestled away in the section of the Appalachian Mountain chain known as the Alleghenies. The area is rich in geothermal activity, so traveling there to “take the waters” has always been a popular pastime dating back to the Colonial era. In fact, the first pool house was built

Dear Mark,We have been SLV members for several

years, but Frank and I must now say farewell to traveling. Frank is on oxygen full time now. Our trips with Sports Leisure will always be among our very fondest memories. Thanks to you, we have visited cities and towns we would never have even thought of seeing! Especially that Mystery Trip to Fargo, ND!

Anyway, please cancel our membership and save some pennies on your distribution costs. We will keep abreast of your activities through friends who are still traveling, and, of course, through your television spots. You are a unique organization and Sacramento is so fortunate to have you!

Thanks again for the memories, and we wish you continued success as you take folks hither and yon. Sincerely,Frank and Marjorie Stotenburg

Ed. Note – Yes, I remember the Mystery Tour to Fargo several years ago. Fargo is the home of the Dairy Queen Dilly Bar, don’t you know! As much as I hate receiving “retirement letters,” this one brings back some wonderful memories. Marjorie and Frank, we wish you the best. You were always terrific travelers, an asset to every group you were a part of. After this edition, we will take your name off the mailing list. Perhaps you’ll listen in on the radio on Sundays from 2-3pm, and stay connected with your Sports Leisure friends.

Hi Mark,Thanks again for taking time to speak to

our group. The members really enjoyed your presentation. They commented afterwards on how funny and informative you were. Your door prizes and handouts were a huge hit as well! Wishing you all the best on your travels.Take care, Diane KnightFWSC

Ed. Note – It was a pleasure talking to the ladies in Folsom. They have a wonderful group, one of the most lively meeting I’ve attended. They were exchanging books and white elephant items were for sale and all sorts of thing were going on. They even laughed at my corny stories.

If you would like Clayton or myself to speak to your club or group, giving some tips on travel and weaving some stories from our 31 years on the road, just give our office a call. Our calendars fill early with our tour directing, but we’d love to accommodate you on our schedule. We can bring a couple of door prizes and as a courtesy, offer your members a complimentary 6-month membership in our Travel Club. It’s about as soft of a “sell” you’ll ever experience. There is no charge for the presentations.

Dear Mark,Recently I was reading the magazine

they stick in the back pocket of the airline seat and they were talking about gratuities you give when traveling. I took note of the amounts suggested for housekeepers, knowing you often remind us they are the hardest working people in the hotel ($2 a day was the suggestion). They suggested $4-8 a day for Tour Directors and about half that for drivers. I wanted to know if Sports Leisure has a suggested amount for these gratuities. Do you recommend a different amount for day trips? What about when we have two tour directors?

Love the trips, wish I could go on them all. Maybe when I retire next year I’ll be able to travel more. Hope so.Eve Bransitch

Ed. Note: Thanks Eve, for your questions. Obviously, gratuities are important for anyone who works in a service industry. That includes housekeepers, tour directors, drivers and a lot of other people you come in contact with on vacation. We try to simplify your travel by covering many of those gratuities for you (limo driver, skycap, bellman, servers at meals).

We leave the driver gratuity up to you

(when you have a driver for an extended time). Because our drivers and tour directors work as a team, I am hesitant to endorse a policy that suggests the driver receive a smaller gratuity than the tour director. I’d rather leave that up to the individual.

For the record, we have recently revised our suggested gratuity amounts to $5-$7 per person, per day for extended tours for tour staff (right in the middle of what you saw in the magazine). For day trips, I would suggest $2-$4 to each staff member. If you have two tour directors, the two staff members will split gratuities equally in all cases. Some people throw in a little extra when they have two directors and the service reflects it, some don’t. It is never expected of you.

I’m not real comfortable talking about gratuities in length, but I know they are tremendously appreciated by our staff and by our drivers, especially Greg. They are a monetary expression of your appreciation of good service, and no matter the amount, we all say thank you.

Mark -I just looked at the Jan/Feb Traveler and

I sure am envious of all you Sacramentans who can take advantage of the wonderful day trips Sports Leisure offers. See you in Hawaii on November!Lea Goyne, San Diego

The Human Side Learn, Laugh, Reflect

Good Advice – Parking in the Minnesota Snow

A man and his wife sat down with their morning cups of coffee and listened to the weather report on the radio in St. Cloud.

“There will be 3 to 5 inches of snow today,” the announcer said. “You must park your cars only on the odd-numbered sides of the streets.”

The man said, “Geez, ok, you betcha” and headed outside to move the car.

The next day the announcer said, “There will be another 2 to 4 inches of snow today. Park only on the even-numbered sides of the streets in the city.” The man shook his head and headed outside again.

Two days later, the announcer said, “There will be 6 to 9 inches of snow today. Park only on…” Right then, the power went out and the radio went dead. The man muttered, “What am I supposed to do now?”

Without looking up from the newspaper, his wife replied, “Why don’t you just leave the car in the garage today?”

Oops… Wrong StoreA customer walks up to a store clerk and

asks, “In what aisle could I find the Polish sausage?”

The clerk looks at him and says, “Are you Polish?”

The guy (clearly offended) says, “Well, yes I am. But let me ask you something. If I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian? Or if I had asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German? Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish? Or if I had asked for a taco, would you ask if I was Mexican? If I asked for some Irish whiskey, would you ask if I was Irish?”

The clerk says, “Well, no, I probably wouldn’t!”

With deep self-righteous indignation, the guy says, “Well then, why did you ask me if I’m Polish because I asked for Polish sausage?”

The clerk replied, “Because you’re in Home Depot.”

Speaking of expanded service from Lincoln and Rocklin, we will be offering pick-ups from those cities for a selected Billy Elliot trip (Wed., Sept. 7) and Mary Poppins in Sacramento (Sat., June 18).

The Ways You Can “Sports Leisure” are Expanding

I know many of the people reading this edition of The Traveler are not currently active travelers. There are many reasons. Personal health, the health of a loved one (including pets), financial considerations, time, just to name a few. I hear from many of you how much you enjoy the newsletter,

because it allows you to follow your Sports Leisure friends even when you can’t be there in person.

As the amount of information available on our web site continues to grow, that offers another opportunity to share the fun of dreaming about travel without ever leaving your home. We post fun things there all the time, so make sure you check in from time to time if you are a computer-oriented traveler at www.sportsleisure.com.

The Travel Guys 2nd SeasonFor those not as savvy when it comes to

technology, and heck, even for those who are, there is another way to get your dose of travel and entertainment news. Just turn your radio to KFBK, 1530 AM on your dial at 2pm each and every Sunday afternoon. That’s when The Travel Guys are on the air. Our own Mark Hoffmann co-hosts along with longtime radio veteran and friend of Sports Leisure Tom Romano. It’s the only locally-produced travel show on the radio.

While it’s a general interest travel show, there’s always a Sports Leisure flavor. Clayton, Scott and Chris have all appeared as live reporters from the road on previous shows. (Think about it, your friends could hear about your trip before you get home to tell them!) So even if you aren’t traveling right now, you can travel with us every week on the radio, because we’re having the same kind of fun we have on the road on the air.

Every week, two lucky Travel Club Members names are announced, and they have until the following Tuesday to call our office and claim a $100 Tour Certificate. So make sure you, or one of your traveling friends are listening. Show tickets and other great giveaways are planned. Last year, a lucky listener in our Mystery Spot Contest went to Hawaii.

On a recent edition of The Travel Guys Radio Show, we had the opportunity to visit with the artistic director of the Ramona Pageant, the outdoor recreation of a piece of California’s early history. Performed in the Inland Empire town of Hemet each

The Barber Pole, or Once Over Lightlyspring, it’s a true community event. Dennis Anderson gave us some information on the Pageant I’d not heard before.

On that same show, Peter Candela of the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce dropped in to regale us about: ”A Taste of Pismo,” a special event each April which highlights the food, wine and culture of the area. “A Taste of Pismo” is also featured on an April Tour.

Each week, The Travel Guys features at least one Sports Leisure destination. To hear the interviews mentioned above go to www.sportsleisure.com and click on US and Canada tours, then scroll to the Ramona Pageant or Pismo Beach tour. Or, go to www.travelguysradio.com to listen to any or all of our previous shows.

What’s This Facebook Thing?“Social media” is one of the current buzz

phrases on our planet. It refers to the ways people are communicating these days. It’s become such an incredible way of sharing information, it’s playing a role in world political events. At Sports Leisure, we do have a Facebook page, and on it you will find pictures from recent tours, often posted while the trip is still on the road. Once again, it’s a wonderful way to “travel” with us without ever leaving your home. Check us out on Facebook, and feel free to post a comment if you like.

How Does This All Change Sports Leisure Vacations? We hope for the better. Communication

has always been the way of the world, and today there are a multitude of ways for people to communicate. Our company is expanding the ways we communicate, to take advantage of some of the technology available. But if you don’t own a computer, or use one rarely, your newsletter will still be there and we’ll still pick up the phone when you call. We are the same company. Except by exposing ourselves (goodness, that almost sounds nasty) to more people in more ways, we can offer an even wider array of destinations for you to visit.

Spring Preview Day to Benefit KVIE

Literacy ProgramAs has become a custom of ours, we

are asking those attending the Spring Preview Open House at KVIE to bring a book for a child. KVIE’s free children’s book program distributes around 10,000 books each year through its Ready To  Learn literacy program. Free books also reach needy children through partner organizations and community events. This program has been under pressure this year, because of stretched finances at PBS.

Bringing a book (or even two) is not required. It’s just one of the little ways our travel family works together to try and make a difference in our community. Books will also be accepted on the bus during the month of March, if you are not attending the Open House on April 1 or 2. Books are needed that are appropriate for children up to age 8 in English, Spanish, or Bilingual (hardback or paperback). Sample titles/categories include:

Sesame Street books

Clifford books

Dr. Seuss or The Cat in the Hat books

Other non-PBS Kids show book samples:

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

If You Give a Pic a Party

Where the Wild Things Are

Curious George books

I Spy a Butterfly

I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont

The Art Lesson by Tomie dePaola

Check with your grandchildren in grade school to see if the you can order books through the Scholastic Book Club. If you order online your grandchild’s class will receive a free book as well.

The Tour Calendar (Previously Announced Tours)

Be a part of Portland’s Rose Festival in June

For over one hundred years, the Portland Rose Festival has served families and individuals from Oregon and beyond with events and programs that spotlight the riches of the Pacific Northwest’s heritage and environment while offering colorful examples of many international cultures. Attended by more than two million people, the festival is annually one of the top three most highly decorated events by the International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA) and in 2007 was named Best Festival in the World.

On the heels of the successful Lewis & Clark Exhibition of 1905, Mayor Harry Lane decided the city should have a festival of roses. In those early years, horse-drawn floats, aquatic events, and fireworks highlighted the festival. Following the 1907 event, a group of 10 businessmen formally organized the Portland Rose Festival as a nonprofit organization (now called the Portland Rose Festival Foundation) to plan and finance the annual event. In 2007, the Rose Festival featured a Century of Celebration in its most elaborate incarnation ever.

The Grand Floral Parade is the crown jewel of the festival, anticipated annually by both locals and festival guests. In 2011 the parade will offer an extravaganza of the Rose Festival’s theme, “Carnival of Roses,” displaying the colors, variety and excitement of a Mardi Gras-style carnival celebration. Sports Leisure’s tour features reserved inside seating at the Memorial Coliseum. Parade guests inside the coliseum are treated to natural light as the curtains are dropped to allow the view of the outside world to come inside! Not to mention, those inside are protected from any wet weather!

Of course, the festival is just a part of several unique itineraries that Sports Leisure has put together to suit anyone interested in traveling to Oregon this summer. Tours of 3 to 12 days are available, most of which include the Rose Festival and the Grand Floral Parade. See all of our tour offerings on this page or for the complete itineraries, see our 2011 catalog.

There has long been a debate between the supporters of Yellowstone and Yosemite, or perhaps it should be said the states of Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and California, for the claiming rights to which is the home of the “first national park.” It is always an interesting and fun conversation to get started. If President Lincoln signed a bill on June 30, 1864 creating the Yosemite Grant and President Ulysses S. Grant signed the billed creating Yellowstone Park on March 1, 1872, how is it that Yellowstone is our first national park and Yosemite is our third?

Yellowstone began with John Colter, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Colter returned in 1807 with stories of a land where a man could go fishing in one spot, then turn and cook his fish in a hot spring without moving; that there was a beautiful canyon so deep that a “man could shout down into it at night and be awakened by his echo the next morning.” He told of walking across areas where the “earth was so hot that mud boiled and steam rose from the ground.” The journalists and naysayers jokingly referred to his stories as “Colter’s Hell”. Yet one man, N.P. Langford wrote, “I had indulged, for several years, a great curiosity to see the wonders of the upper valley of the Yellowstone. The stories told by trappers and mountaineers of the natural phenomena of that region were so strange and marvelous that… I [organized in 1870] an expedition for the express purpose of exploring it…” Upon his return from his trek along the Yellowstone and Madison Rivers, over the Beartooth Mountains and down to the “firehole” with geysers, mudpots, fumaroles and hot springs, Langford went East on a lecturing circuit sponsored by Northern Pacific Railroad and he said of Yellowstone, “there is a majestic harmony in the whole” of it that all must see. And the push for Yellowstone as a public park was born.

Check out Sports Leisure’s entire itinerary for Yellowstone, Geysers and Ghost Towns, which includes this majestic park, on this page, online at www.sportsleisure.com or on page 48 of our 2011 tour catalog. Give us a call if you’re interested!

(And join us on either our Yellowstone or Yosemite tours to find out the rest of the story… Who’s first, who’s third, and by the way, which is our second national park? And why.)

British Columbia’s Skeena Train:From Ocean Foam to Mountain Peaks

VIA Rail’s Skeena makes a daylight run across western Canada providing two days’ majestic rail travel through mountain ranges, forests, valleys, along rivers, and into one of Canada’s premier national parks. Moving at a stately pace, the train covers 700-odd miles between Prince Rupert, British Columbia and Jasper, Alberta in roughly 19 hours over two days. The train is small with two travel classes, and it’s restored early ’50s cars are retro-sleek. The train embarks from Prince Rupert, the island town at the line’s western end. Soon passengers are rolling through rain forest and by coastal mountains, and dozens of waterfalls, including 1,500-foot Emanon Falls.

Following the Skeena River the train passes through several small towns, skirts Seven Sisters Mountain, crosses trestles and bridges, and goes through eleven tunnels before arriving at Prince George for the evening. Along the way passengers may spot an eagle or a bear before farms and meadows replace coastal scenery.

After spending a comfortable evening at a hotel in Prince George, the geographical center of British Columbia, the Skeena continues its journey along the Fraser River, through forest and farmland, and past several more very small towns. Near the small town of McBride, mountains once again loom. Mount Robson, the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies and probably the one attracting the most clouds, presents several photo opportunities before entering Jasper National Park. The huge natural range is home to moose, bears, mountains, and glaciers. Without disturbing any elk that may be wandering among the tracks, the Skeena glides to a stop in the small town of Jasper.

The Skeena is featured on Sports Leisure’s Circle British Columbia journey. See brief details on this page, view the complete itinerary online at www.sportsleisure.com or see pages 26-27 of our 2011 tour catalog, It’s All About the Journey.
