From what I have gathered, it has been many, many years since our Chapter sponsored a progressive meal like this. Thanks to the help of the Weber, Crisel, and Nagamatsu households, there was a great turnout with plenty to eat.

This three stop tour along Imperial Highway from La Mirada to Yorba Linda allowed everybody to tour houeholds and garages as well as to get a bit closer as friends. Not everybody drove their trucks but that wasn’t the idea. The main thing was to get as many people out as we could and from that point, with 22 people in attendance, this was actually one of the best attended outings we have had in quite some time. Like always, if you didn’t attend, it was your loss!

Always a great hose, the “RING MASTER” Rudy Weber was the driving

North/South Run... by Gene & Karen WolcottWe started our drive on Thursday around 8:30 AM. We arrived at Avila Beach Golf Resort around 1:00 PM where we met up with Gene Espey and Ron Garcia from the Sacramento area.We had met them in 2011 at the North/South Run and found we all love golf along with our trucks! Had a fun round although the course was quite challenging.

After golf and after Ron getting a jump for his truck from Gene, we all headed to Morro Bay and to check in at our hotel, Best Western Plus-San Marcos Inn, one of three hotels in Morro available for the North/South. We all checked in and then off to dinner at The Great American Fish Co. in Morro. Had great meal, although quite late, around 9 PM. On way to dinner spotted Rudy and Edith Weber at gas station. Said our hellos and then off to dinner.

Friday met at 8:30 AM at Dolly’s Donuts along with 30 other trucks for the Mystery Cruise which was led by Laurie and Kurt. Great couple and great cruise. Our cruise was to Estrella Warbirds Museum/Woodland Automobile Collection in Paso Robles. Great venue, both the museum and collection. After a couple of hours lunch was available for $9 per person, a buffet set up especially for all of us. Good lunch. The museum fee had been paid for by Laurie and Kurt.

On our return drive to Morro everyone took their own route. We ended up in Harmony, population 18. Quaint place with a winery. We walked around, had a cool drink and then just sat in the shade visiting with Laurie and Kurt and Edith and Rudy. On our return to Morro we checked in at La Serena Inn where we received our goodie bag and t-shirt.

At 6:00 PM we lined up in front of La Serena Inn, about 40 trucks in all. Our first stop was Eddie’s Custom Car Shop where we checked out his shop and they provided food and beverages. Eddie enjoyed having all the trucks park in front of his shop. He is a relatively new business, just open six years. After Eddie’s we headed to Embarcadero and cruised for about an hour. It sure looked great seeing all the trucks cruising and we got a lot of attention from all the locals plus anyone in town for the weekend. After cruising we all parked and then headed to ice cream shop for a free ice cream and two cookies.

On Saturday we were up early as the Show-N-Shine began at 8:00 AM. It was held at Tidelands Park. Lunch was available on site, reason-able, hot dogs or pulled pork. The venue was great, we were all parked on grass, 70 plus trucks, what a sight. It was good to see Dale and Gloria Beverley at the park even though they were without a show vehicle. The show ended at 3:00 PM.

The dinner and awards were held at the Community Center at 7:00 PM. Karen and I were the only two from Pickups Ltd Orange County. Rudy did receive an award for one of top 20 of show. Food was good and awards well deserved. We sat with our friends from Sacramento, Gene Espey and Ron Garcia and also Ron’s son and daughter-in-law joined us as they had driven up for show from Burbank.

In summary, it was a great show/cruise. The hotel accommoda-tions were great and served a great continental breakfast each morning. The committee handling the parking did an excep-tional job, very organized for all events. Tidelands Park was a great choice for show, as well as the Mystery Cruise with lots of interesting military displays and aircraft. The automobile collection had some great classics.

We had great weather for the North/South, no fog on show day made for a sunny and warm day. It would be great to see a better turn out for our club. They do a lot of work putting this event on. Let’s support them.

Endless Summer! Most of you know that I have been a high school teacher for the last 22 years after having been a union ironworker for ten years prior. As a teacher I have been fortunate to have at least expe-rienced summers off from teaching school. Summer for teachers is usually about six weeks or less depending if you are involved with summer school or teacher workshops. I would look forward to those summers to get things done because once school started full time, I found I made very little progress on any of my hob-bies. This summer I decided to extend it for good and retired from teaching school in pursuit of the “Endless Summer”. So far it has been an incredible experience. I began it with rebuilding three automatic transmissions to get some of my projects jump started, and have now transitioned into working on one of my 56’s, as well as several honey-do’s. It is great just knowing I don’t have to put my tools and hobbies away when September arrives this year.

60th Anniversary of the 1956 F-100 at the F-100 Supernationals in TennesseeConsider making this event in 2016! Now with the time to pursue hobbies I am planning to attend the 2016 Supernationals in Tennessee in May 2016 with my cur-rent truck build (Check the pic). It has stepped up as a priority now with me having the time to work on it. I mentioned it at our last club meeting and had several members interested. Any more club members interested in attending let me know and we can start planning the trip starting next year. If you are even thinking about going start preparing your truck now. Based on our past travels to the East it will be an experience we will remember for a lifetime.

North / South August 15th and 16th 2014This year’s North/South Run was held again in Morro Bay. There was a noticeable increase in attendance from last year with around 70 trucks sharing the green grass of Morro Bay State Park. The weather was beautiful for this time of year. Friday’s Mystery Cruise was to the Arciero Auto Museum, just outside of Paso Robles on State Highway 46. Orange County members in attendance besides Gloria and me included Rudy and Edith Webber, and Gene and Karen Wolcott. Honorary members Bob and Jerri Busick were also there. They have been attending since the first North South Run in 1970. Next year rumor has it that the 45th North/South Run will be held back in San Luis Obispo at the Embassy Suites.

Since its inception in 1999, National Collector Car Appreciation Day has been gaining in popularity across the country. Originally the initiative of The SEMA Action Network or SAN to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society, many municipalities have now issued proclamations naming the second Friday & Saturday in July as the day to officially recognize those growing legions of car collectors and their unique vehicles.

The U.S. Senate has helped launch Collector Car Appreciation Day by passing Resolutions each year at the SAN’s request. The previous resolutions were sponsored by automotive advocates Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC). There is also a trend

to celebrate collector cars during the entire month of July. Pickups Limited figured that the best way to join in was to attend our weekly favorite... Donut Derelicts in Huntington Beach.

As usual, we were not dissappointed with the turnout. Many of the regulars including Gary “CHOPIT” Fioto were on hand along with a vintage Ice Cream truck (yes he was sell-ing goodies), a tricked out old Ford PU complete with a tilt bed. The appliance service guy even showed up from the past!

It was a great morning that was successful in driving home the point of driving your cars and having fun!

The day I lost Big Red... by Bobby Flores

On May 19, 2014 at 10:30, I was driving down Brea Canyon Road when the engine shut off. I was able to coast into the center island, but that was about all I could do. I tried to restart truck but nothing happened. I got out of the truck to check under the hood and to my horror discovered the engine was on fire!

I called 911 immediately but it took them 24 minutes to arrive. By then then the damage had been done. There was no saving Big Red. If only I had a fire extinguisher I could have saved my truck. The important thing is no one was hurt but I’m still heartbroken. That truck gave Anita and I so much joy. We miss our truck.

The moral of the story is to always carrya fire extinguisher in your cab.I know I will.

Thanks to all of you who are helping me find a new truck. I’m still looking. I know I’ll find one some day. Big Red is hard to replace.

During a recent vacation to all points north including Canada, I realized just how far we have all come in the world of transportation. Our trip alone included rides with Amtrack, Boeing, Mercedes, Duck (DUKW) Boats, and Ford with a bunch of Nike walking tossed in.

Everything was moving along smoothly when I spot-ted a matte black F-100 model in a shop in Seattle’s Pike Place Market. That’s when it hit me and I started to chuckle... We are all a bunch of nut cases when it comes to any type of transportation. Ever since we were kids making push cars with our buddies or riding skate boards down that hill, every one of us totally enjoys whatever mode of transportation we have available. The more outrageous, the better we like it! THINK ABOUT IT!

You guys have heard me joke with Dale from time to time about him being “The Smartest Man I Know”. It’s a little running thing I have had for several years as my way of paying homage to somebody that has extreme talent and most of all, common sense. If you go back several years, that title belonged to my good friend Jim Keeter. I met Jim through my “other” car club, the Mini Owners of America. We all knew that Jim was something special and a bit off center like the rest of us when he showed up with his beautiful vintage Mini Cooper “S” that included a Vintage Air package... NOBODY DOES THAT.

Well you see, Jim and his wife Kathy both retired and moved to the Pacific North West so that the could have a bit more room for his “stuff”. Besides having a beautiful house with plenty of land, he has oneof the most outrageous workshops you will find.

Jim will explain that he “NEEDS” all of the space you see here for his projects which currently include a ‘32 Ford roadster and a ‘56 F-100 (See the Barn Find article in the September/October 2009 newsletter).

The bottom line is I was forced to “strip” Jim of his title since he moved away form civilization, moving the ”title” on to Dale... The joke may continue but we all sure miss his talents and friendship here in So Cal. Jim’s secret to success is simple... Show up for work every day and just work hard,

Check out the photos and enjoy a man’s dream come true.

Here is a shot of Jim at Donut Derelicts with his 1930 Model “A”. This is a replica of his the car he had in high school at Long Beach Poly. He built this from memory and some old photos used for reference. This car was featured in the March 2005 issue of Rod & Custom which is still available online. He has also attended one of our Safety Checks with it.

Here is a weekly event that we don’t get to very often.it’s the Friday night cruise atBob’s Big Boy in Burbank.

This Bob’s restaurant was built in 1949 by locals and is the oldest remaining BOB’S BIG BOY in America. The building may have the designation as a “California but these is no way to catalogue the huge number and variety of people and vehicles that rolls through this place on a given evening.

We left our Cerritos meeting place just before 1:00pm which may seem early to some of you, but add the one hour crawl through LA Friday af-ternoon traffic to the fact that tons of people show up each week and the early start was quite logical. When we arrived, parking was already scarce which spread us about the lot, but as time passed, there was actually a large roll over of people and their vehicles.

It wasn’t until 7:30 or so that things really got going with the “third shift” or participants coming through. We saw everything right down to the folks that had three cats riding on the dash and parcel shelf of their Olds.

Maybe this isn’t for everybody every week, but it sure is fun to attend once in a while.

Bob’s Big Boy, Burbank TRY SAYING THAT FAST A FEW TIMES - by Chris Travers

Bob’s is unique in that there seems to be three different “shifts” of people and cars throughout the evening. Come early and stay late to see everything.

If it’s British like this really cool Lotus, it either leaks or has electrical issues... OR BOTH! This is an Overhaulin’ car from an early 2013 episode.

Not everything was strange.

The Road Kings have some really

nice cars.

The Rest of Bobby’s Story... With the help of a good friend, we found our new truck on line. Hemmings website has many, many vehicles for sale but this yellow truck made a strong first impression. After much research and many, many phone calls the truck was shipped to us from Florida. Our hope is to have many, many safe and happy trips in our new truck. Thanks to all of you who helped in our search for the replacement of Big Red... Bobby

One of my favorite things about being a part of Pickups Limited of Orange County is the spontaneous thingsthat we sometimes do. A case in point was a phone call I received from Dusty this past Sunday regarding some photos that he had taken the Friday before on our trip to Bob’s in Burbank... (Thanks for those by the way)-check out page 14-15. As soon as he had finished saying that he was on his way over, I suggested that we should “invest” (WASTE) the rest of the afternoon at Ecology Auto Parts. Well he said that it might take him an extra 2 or 3 minutes as he needed to load up his tools but he would be on his way.

The trip to the yard did now disappoint. The entertainment factor was huge with custom paint and body work availablefor viewing down to custom fabricationand some important safety tips for us to see. The only bad news especially for Rudy and The Spray Can is that our collection of free passes are no longer valid!

THIS IS NOT RUST! It was an exercise in how to use a cut-ting torch

SAFETY FIRST!

MY FIRST PAINT JOB! CAN YOU TELL?

There is nothing strange about seeing a Ford starter solenoid under the hood... BUT THIS WAS AN AUDI!

ABOUT USPickups Limited began in April, 1968 as the result of an ad placed in the Penny Saver. Our Orange County Chapter is the oldest and currently the largest of 7 Chapters found throughout Southern California, with membership limited to 1948-56 F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels. We are an active non-profit organization. Each June we host the largest all Ford truck show in the Western United States, the F-100 Western Nationals while every January we produce Jeff’s Fun Run, a poker run throughout the car culture of LA and Orange Counties. Our business meetings are on the second Thursday of each month at Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park (info below) and we usually plan one group outing each month. Check the flip side of this flyer for a sample of Pickups Limited’s Orange County Chapter events.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS• Where can I buy an F-100? You would be surprised where they show up. Trucks can be found on E-bay, Auto and Truck Trader and in Drive magazine as well as various F-1 & F-100 on-line sites including pickupslimited.com and at many of the local cruise events. You might even find one in your own neighborhood! If you feel adventurous, you can even build a brand new 1956 F-100 from parts that many vendors provide!• Where can I get parts and repairs? Check the flip side for a listing of great vendors that support Pickups Limited.• Can I do repairs myself? Many of us do most of the mechanical tasks ourselves. That’s half the fun. There also are many books available from mechanical to paint and body to interior total restoration.• Do I have to own a truck to join? Yes but it can be a work in progress. The love for the truck is what comes first. If you are looking for a truck, maybe we can help. • Do I have to be a member to participate in Club events? Not at all! Non members are always welcome. But if you do a "Run" in something other than a F-1 or F-100, we might ask you to follow the pack.• How can I get a ride in a F-100? Show up at a meeting or event and ask!• How can I join Pickups Limited? Come to a meeting or one of our events for the first step. There is a basic probationary period required.• Do I need special insurance for such an old vehicle? Not really, it depends on the value of the truck. Many companies will offer premium coverage although there are speciality insurance carriers that can insure your baby for the full stated value.
