Chairperson’s Report

I didn’t realise the pressure that I would be put under when I took on this position. Only 3

days into my position, I receive a call from the editor of the newsletter requesting an

article.

My aim for the next year is to continue the good work that the previous board started, run

our club efficiently and profitably and continue to improve relationship with Southside.

I would like to thank the eighty-eight members who attended the AGM. I am not sure

what the drawcard was as there were no elections, no notices of motion and basically, no

general business. Everything ran too smoothly. I am worried that maybe that was the lull before the storm. With

three out of the four members of the executive being new to their positions (Bev Geldart, Jim Wiedman and myself) I

hope the members will give us a little leeway whilst we settle in. With the departure of John Taylor, Kevin Kunst and

John Gamlin, we lose over 25 years of experience that these gentlemen had on boards, committees etc. This is a big

loss to the club. Should any members wish to contact the board to discuss things, they can do it through any of the

board members but note that Dierdre Vokes and John Fealy are the respective clubs contact points.

I would like to congratulate the incoming presidents and their committees on their election to their respective

positions. It is a good sign to see that many of the existing committee members ran for re-election and were

successful thus showing the harmony and interest in the club. We all must be doing something right to please our

members.

One of the members contacted me about the lack of ashtrays, butt buckets etc in the Designated Outdoor Smoking

Area (DOSA). I approached club manager Jeff and he advised that they were put out but had a tendency to

disappear. If any members are taking, stealing, dumping or borrowing them would you please control your urges and

resist. As an ex-smoker, I realise that ashtrays are not the most attractive fragrant things but I prefer ashtrays to be

used before people start dropping their ash and butts on the floor. Please note that smokers have rights as well and

their smoking area is limited.

Our research into the fruit cake slicing is continuing and we can rule out the following:-

Catering staff are not having a competition to see who can slice the thinnest piece of cake

A local church did not donate a carton of communion wafers for afternoon tea

There is no plan to be in the Guiness Book of Records for the number of slices that can be obtained from one

fruit cake

We are not trying to feed more people with one fruit cake compared with the fishes and loaves from the

Bible.

Some male members are not happy with the introduction of maroon trousers for the men. This was mooted more

than 6 months ago with members recommended to purchase maroon trousers when they updated their apparel.

The new trousers are only compulsory for representative play e.g. pennants, state and district competition etc.

White trousers can still be worn at club competitions and social games.

When I commenced this article I felt like the man who jumped off the Empire State building. As he fell, he was saying

‘so far so good’. Now, I finally realise that I have hit the pavement.

Men’s Presidents Report I had the honour of being elected as President of the Men’s Council on 26 August 2012. I would like to thank the Members for putting their faith in me to carry the Men’s Section of the Mt Gravatt Bowls Club forward for the next 12 Months. I would like to thank Alan Girvan for the job he did as the President for the previous 12 Months. Alan showed maturity and level headedness in performing his role. Also I would like to thank the previous Men’s Council Members for their efforts under Alan’s guidance. I want to welcome the new Men’s Council and congratulate them all for stepping forward to help

the Club. I have spoken to both the outgoing and incoming Ladies Presidents, Mary Ferro and Di Girvan and we all hope that both the Men’s and Ladies Sections of the Club can cooperate and work together for the betterment of the Mt Gravatt Bowls Club. The Pennant Season is nearing its conclusion and it appears that the Club will have three or four Divisions in the Finals race. Good luck to all for the remaining Games and hope that we can win at least one Flag. Once the Gateway District Pennant Season finishes, turn your thoughts to participating in Club Championships and Competitions in which the Club may be involved, such as Super Challenge. To prosper and thrive, the Club needs you support, whether it be on the bowling green or by helping around the Club. I look forward to catching up with all of you over the tenure of my Appointment. If you have any concerns about what you see or hear in the Club, please see me.

Today, 31 Aug, the Super Vets Singles was won by Vince Potts. Runner up was Frank Gillis. Malcolm Ferguson. President Men’s Section

Deirdre’s Club Chat

Congratulations to all those elected to the Board and Men’s and Ladies sections. May you

have a happy, successful, satisfying and trouble free term of office. We bid goodbye to

John Taylor, Kevin Kunst and John Gamlin as they retire from the Board executive, may they use their freedom

well.

Sadly Chris Kelly passed away suddenly on the 12th of August after suffering a heart attack. As well as being a

member, Chris was also a generous sponsor of our club through his company, Fresh Pools. We also mourn the

loss of Alec Tosh who passed away on the 27th August after suffering ill health for some time. Vale, Chris and

Alec you will be sadly missed.

There are a considerable number of members travelling over the next couple of months. Sid Johnson and his

partner are enjoying the delights of America and Europe; Mary Smith and Yvonne Clark are going cruising on

the Rhine; John Fealy is taking to the seas checking out the South Pacific Islands; Stephanie and Ian Blair sailing

for New Zealand; Jenny Tsao and her daughter flying to Fiji for some R&R; The cruising caper would appear to

be the “in thing” and not to be left out Brian and I are jumping aboard the Pacific Dawn sailing up the coast to

Port Douglas to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary. Joining us will be Les and Dorelle Ockendon.

The Stork has been busy delivering Great-Grandchildren of late: Lorna and Kevin Cavanough delighted with the

arrival of number 4 baby Olivia; Margaret and Noel Gallagher also welcomed their 4th, and Peg Jefferies brings

her brood to 14 Great Grandchildren with the arrival of Pippa.

What a pleasure to see Paddy Power back on the rinks after a long absence due to ill health. Carmel Grieve is

also making a comeback after a difficult few months. Best wishes to you both and may your health continue to

improve

Congratulations to the Ladies Pennant Teams for a campaign well fought. Div. 1 contended mightily to bring

home the runners up flag. To the men’s teams keep up the good fight. We wish you well.

One of the unsung volunteers of our club would have to be our newsletter editor, Don Hamilton. Don has done

an amazing job putting together this bi-monthly publication. He collates the various articles and presents them

in a professional manner to enable us to keep up with what is happening in our club. He has not always been in

the best of health but always puts in the effort to keep the “presses rolling.” He is also very patient with his

contributor’s tardiness. I’m sure I speak for all our members who enjoy the issues in saying thank you Don- well

done, keep up the good work.

Just think the next newsletter to be “put to bed” will be the final one for the year. How scary is that?

Cheers for now,Deirdre

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

As most of you will be aware by now, this will be my last column as General Manager of

Southside Sport and Community Club having announced my retirement effective from the 28th

of September 2012. However, I will still be making a contribution to Southside by supervising

the Stage 5 redevelopment at the main club which will continue through until April / May next

year. This will only require a few hours a week leaving time for bowls so look out the

Wednesday afternoon pairs competition. The boat, that has been sitting in my garage for the past few years

gathering spiders and all manner or other inhabitants (other than human), will see some more time on the water as

well. I only live five minutes from the boat ramp at Victoria Point so I have no excuses.

The question on everyone’s lips at the moment is who will be taking over my chair? I am extremely pleased to

announce that my long term 2IC and Group Operations Manager, Kim McGregor, has been appointed by the

Management Committee as my successor. Kim is a foundation employee and was an inexperienced 22 year old when

he came to the club and was there when it opened its doors for the very first time on the 27th of September 1997.

His appointment is a credit to his ability and it is another one of those success stories where the General Manager

has worked his way up from the bottom. Kim started his career in the club industry as a barman at the Wynnum Golf

Club and was recruited to Southside by the foundation, and still incumbent, Club Treasurer, Bruce Truasheim. Bruce

was a Past President of the Golf Club and saw the potential in Kim.

Damien Boyce, the current Club Manager at Southern Cross Sports Club, will move up into Kim’s former position of

Group Operations Manager. Damien has gained a great deal of experience over the years having previously worked

as a Duty Manager at Queensland Lions Football Club at Richlands and at Easts Leagues Club. As of the 29th of

September, the Southside organisation will have a young and enthusiastic team at the helm with only one of the four

person senior management team over the age of forty. I have taken it as a huge compliment that the Management

Committee has had the confidence in our own people to promote within our organisation. I must have done some

things right.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our Bowls Club Manager, Jeff McLennan, and his offsider, Rita Geronimos. I

have not worked with a more conscientious manager than Jeffery and Rita has done an excellent job for me,

particularly with the functions. I have to be nice to Jeff now because he is the Chairman of Selectors again this year

and I won’t be his boss any more.

A very special thanks to the Bowls Club Board and the Ladies and Men’s Councils. You have been a pleasure to work

with, particularly over the past two years. I would offer a very special thanks to the former Treasurer, John Gamlin.

He has made an outstanding contribution during his time as Treasurer providing professional advice in overseeing all

matters financial. The partnership that is Southside and the Bowls Club should remain strong and provide a strong

future for our club.

Bye, bye Southside – hello bowls

Sponsorship Manager’s Report

Recent Events

The Retirement Village Bowls day held on 10th August was again very successful

with the maximum 30 teams attending. Thank you to all those who attended and

those members who assisted on the day. The next day is to be held on Friday 9th

November and we look forward to filling the greens again on that day.

Upcoming Events

The next Club Selected Mixed Triples event will be held on Sunday 30th September. Sponsors are Southside Toyota

and The Village at Coorparoo. We are looking for a great turnout, so please put your name down now on the sheet

on the Men’s noticeboard.

Amended Date

I can confirm the invitational day to Renaissance Retirement Living is Monday 19th November. This was tentatively

shown in the calendar as 25th June. We will be seeking names of those wishing to attend from early November.

The Club Selected Mixed Triples event which was to have been held on 2nd September has been transferred to

Sunday 25th November. Same format with a 9.00 am start. Sponsor Elements Third Age Living @ Springwood has

agreed to move the sponsorship to the new date. My thanks to Chiou See Anderson for this.

A function to celebrate our achievements in all external competitions is to be held following the completion of The

Sunnybank Shield competition which concludes mid November. Final details of the function will be decided over the

next few weeks and details will be conveyed by way of notice board advertisements and through the chair on game

days and in the next newsletter.

Please remember, if you are considering a purchase of goods or services, please think of our sponsors first. They

make a most valued contribution to our Club and deserve our custom in return. A full listing of our sponsors is

contained in this newsletter. Please ensure you mention you are a member of Mt Gravatt Bowls Club when making

your enquiry or purchase.
