SEPTEMBER 4, 2016—23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
An Open Invitation to Talk about What It Means to Be Catholic
Let's talk! Every Sunday at 9am (beginning next Sunday, September 11th), we will walk with you
on a journey of faith and answer any questions you may have about Catholicism like....
What is faith and how do you get more of it?
What do Catholics believe and how is it different from Christians of other Traditions?
What's going on at Mass?
Why is the Bible so confusing? How can I understand it?
Do Catholics worship Mary and the Saints?
What's what in the church building (we'll talk about the altar, the pulpit, the tabernacle, etc.)
Who's who in the Church (from the people to the Pope)
Why do Catholics...? (fill in the blank with your own question!)
We will meet every Sunday (unless otherwise noted in the bulletin) at 9am in the Parish Communi-
ty Center (the building between the school & the church). You can come to each session or only
the ones you want to. We'll begin with a brief presentation on some topic concerning faith and an-
swer whatever questions you may bring. It's informal and relaxed.
Who's it for? Anyone! If you're thinking about becoming Catholic (through
the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults or "RCIA"), it's for you. If you're
already baptized Catholic or in another denomination, it's for you. If you're
just curious, it's for you. We will work with you on an individual basis to see
what your needs and wishes are.
No need to sign up, just show up. Come to all or to just some of the sessions. We will publish the
topics each week in the bulletin & on our website (leothegreat.org). Free coffee and donuts will be
available. Still have questions? Call us at 216-661-1006 or email Father at
[email protected]. Let's talk...heart to heart.

First Reading: Wisdom 9:13-18b
The book of Wisdom was written by a teacher who
lived in Alexandria, Egypt, a center for Greek philosophy
in the ancient world. Fearful that the Jewish people might
be captivated by this secular wisdom, the author contrasts it
with the rich spiritual wisdom found in Jewish religious
traditions. The ninth chapter presents a prayer of Solomon
for wisdom, and today’s reading is an excerpt from this
prayer.
Second Reading: Philemon 9-10, 12-17
Philemon was a rich man with many slaves, one of
whom — Onesimus—escaped. Onesimus reached Paul in
prison and converted to Christianity. In sending Onesimus
back to Philemon, Paul gave him a letter to take with him, a
portion of which we hear today.

ST. LEO THE GREAT—CLEVELAND, OHIO
ST. LEO THE GREAT—CLEVELAND, OHIO
Dear Parishioners,
Just before I left for Rome, two parishioners died whom
I had visited & prayed with when they were ill. I was
saddened by their deaths and by the inability to celebrate
their funeral Masses though I am grateful to Fr. Vesely for
presiding at the funeral for Carol Glinka and to Fr. Weist for
celebrating the funeral Mass of Loretta Weber. I had spent
some time with Loretta at her apartment and at Holy Family
Hospice. She had worked and then volunteered in our school
for many years. She had a dry sense of humor that would
always make me smile. Carol Glinka would be at the 4pm
Mass on Saturdays and she was always kind and thoughtful
toward me & toward Michaela to whom she loved to give
treats & toys. Carol moved quickly from Fairview Hospital
to Marymount Hospital, and then finally home where she
was under the care of Hospice for a few days. As with
Loretta, I anointed her and knew that she and Loretta were
accepting of their circumstances and approached death with
faith in the resurrection. Both of them will be missed and we
commend them and all the faithful departed to the mercy of
God.
God's Mercy is something I thought about frequently
during my two-week stay in Rome and of course Pope
Francis has asked us to celebrate this great Jubilee Year of
Mercy. I celebrated Mass near the altar of St. Leo the Great
where he is buried inside St. Peter Basilica and I celebrated
Mass at the tomb of St. Peter below the basilica. At these
places and at many of the holy sites I visited, I prayed for
you all and asked God's blessing on our parish and school.
On our last day in Rome, we stood in St. Peter's Square as
Pope Francis gave us his blessing as he always does at Noon
on Sundays before telling us all to have a good lunch! And
good lunches I had...and dinners...and snacks in between.
You can't get a good taste of Rome unless you get a good
taste of Roman meals! While it's always great to get away,
it's also great to come back home. So from Rome to home I
am blessed and hope to share some of Rome's treasures of
faith with you in the coming months.
This Sunday Pope Francis is celebrating the
Canonization Mass for Mother Teresa. St. Teresa of Calcutta
is known the world round for the way she showed mercy to
the poorest of the poor. We are blessed to have heard and
seen such holy men & women live lives of faith and love
during our own lifetime. May we follow their example &
share in their glory.
