Focusing the Gospel
A contentious debate raged in the early church as to whether or not Christians
should continue to observe the ritual practises of Judaism. Jesus challenges the
scribes’ insistence that faithfulness to ceremonial washings and other rituals
constitutes complete faithfulness to the will of God. He scandalises his hearers by
proclaiming, “nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the
things that come out from within are what defile.” It is the good that one does,
motivated by the spirit of God within a believer’s heart, that is important in the eyes
of God, not how scrupulously he or she keeps the laws and rituals mandated by
tradition. Living Liturgy 2018

A BLESSING FOR FATHERS AND GRANDFATHERS
Holy Father,
You are the one who knows how absolutely special fathers are.
You made them that way.
How else can a man work so hard, give so much, and love unconditionally, without your strength?
So, first Lord, thank You for fathers. for big, strong men with tender hearts, with hands that are calloused and rough, yet so soft and gentle when hearts need mending.
Lord, help children to delight this day in being with their dads, even if it must be only by phone.
May the precious memories flow, and bring laughter, and new love and appreciation.
Lord, please take care of our dads.
Though they are brave and protective, they must also be frightened sometimes, when money runs low, when we need things, when we're hurt or sick.
Lord, when their hearts break because they can't do it all, please help us to let them know how much we love them. And how much You love them.
Lord, forgive the men who know they are not good fathers, and help them to know when and if they can make things better, with Your help.
And Lord, for those dads who keep trying and keep loving after messing up so many times, help their children to love them even more in return.
Lord, for that dad who has lost a child, please let him know You are there, right beside him, for nothing else can heal a heart so torn.
For the father who is parenting alone, strengthen him with your love.
Be with those whose fathers have died. Give them consolation and the assurance that their dad is in Your care. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
A blessed and joy-filled Father’s Day to all our
fathers and grandfathers. Please stay for our
Special Breakfast after Mass TODAY.

FROM THE CLERGY SUPPORT FUND
This year our Port Pirie Diocese has been richly blessed with the Priestly Ordination of our newest priest, Fr. Hau Le, and the celebration of seventy years of Ordination of our most senior priest, Monsignor Ray Pope.
Such occasions are reminders of the gratitude we owe to God for gifting us with priests and deacons who serve the Church and spiritually care for us in so many ways.
Today is Father’s Day. As we give thanks to God the Father for the gift of our earthly fathers, we also give thanks and renew our efforts to prayerfully and materially sup-port the fathers and deacon of our Port Pirie Diocese.
The material care of the priests and deacons of the Diocese of Port Pirie is the re-sponsibility of the Clergy Support Fund (previously known as the Sustentation Fund and Sick Priests’ Fund).
The Clergy Support Fund, through a Board elected by the clergy of the Diocese, man-ages the monies generously given by parishioners across the Diocese to the First Collection at weekend Masses, on occasions of Baptisms, Marriages and Funerals and through Easter and Christmas Offerings.
These sources of Income are used to finance a number of Income and Benefit Pack-ages for all of the Priests and Deacons of the Diocese. The various packages are modest but provide a food and household allowance and a stipend for clergy not in receipt of a Government pension, health care cover, an allowance for personal and professional expenses and the funding of our motor vehicle expenses. In addition, the Diocesan Car Scheme ensures that our priests and deacon are able to change the vehicles they drive on a regular basis, enhancing their safety on our rural roads.
The Clergy Support Fund would like to express its gratitude to all our parishioners for their generosity to our First Collection.
Some may be able to increase your giving on a regular basis. Others may be able to give a donation using the envelopes on the pews or available at your Catholic School office or by contributing to today’s Leaving Collection. Some, who normally put their loose change in the First Collection, might be able, as we asked some years ago to instead, drop Father a note. Alternatively, it may be more convenient to donate to the Diocesan Presbytery Fund by direct debit (BSB: 105003; Account Number: 124469540). Others may not be in a position to contribute more at this time. We un-derstand this and are grateful for whatever support you are able to give.
May the Lord continue to richly bless you all in these challenging and confronting times.
Yours in Christ,
Bishop Gregory O’Kelly SJ, Monsignor Paul Quirk, Fathers Paul Crotty, Brian Mathews, Jim Monaghan VG, Francis Montero and Steve Ardill, Neil Davidson and Peter Quirk
