Pastor’s Corner Just as He tells the deaf man in the Gospel, Jesus tells us: “Open your ears to listen to
the word of God, the word of others.” To open one’s ears means to be attentive to
God’s action in every day happenings. To open one’s ears is to take an interest in other
people’s problems, in their values and their rights; it means to be sensitive towards those
who ask for help, the weakest, the least experienced. It means to listen to each other,
between spouses, between parents and children, since each one is in some way right. There is, though, another sin: that of being mute. We don’t speak with God, we clam up
within ourselves and refuse to share with others what goes on inside us. In curing the
deaf and mute man, Jesus tells us that He can return to us the gift of speech so we can
communicate with one another. Each Sunday we come to church in order to
communicate with God and with our brothers and sisters. In the Bible we read “God
speaks to each one”, and He asks for an answer: that we speak with Him. In Christ, His
Son and His Word, He speaks to us about the love He has for us. The Mass is the time
to speak and answer to God, to thank Him and ask for His help. The Mass is also the
time in which we must think seriously about others in order to remove what prevents us
from communicating, listening, speaking. May God help us to be sensitive to others and
to pass on to them the message of our Christian experience.
Fr. Federico
impide comunicarnos, oir y hablar.
P. Federico

OUR LADY OF CHARITYOUR LADY OF CHARITYOUR LADY OF CHARITY
At the beginning of the XVII century a beautiful image of the Mother of Christ appeared
floating on the waters of the Bay of Nipe, Cuba, after a storm. The image was on a small board
on which was written: I AM THE VIRGIN OF CHARITY. Three farmers who had been looking for
salt, picked it up and took it to a small town called Barajagua. Some years later the image was
taken to the parish church of El Cobre, from where the image would disappear. A local girl
called Apolonia kept saying that she had seen it on the slope of the hill of El Cobre. After
praying for guidance, the town people saw like a glare on the place indicated by Apolonia, where they built a small hermitage and placed the image there. It was at this site that the
National Shrine was eventually built and many people go there constantly to pray and ask Her
protection in times of danger and need. The venerated image of the Virgin came to this city of Miami in 1961, accompanying her
children amid the pain of exile. Within a few years, when many still did not even own their
own homes, as Bishop Román used to recall, they erected a chapel, next to Biscayne Bay,
which is everyone’s pride, a place of welcome, a center of encounter with God through His
Mother. Once again this year we will show the same love and devotion to Our Lady of Charity
and with the intercession from the House of the Father, of our always pastor Bishop Agustín Román, we will gather to celebrate the Eucharist on her feast day, September 8. We will pray
as a community for our brothers and sisters from Cuba, for freedom, for the release of political
prisoners and for a the success of Pope Francis’s visit to Cuba and to the U.S. Come and join
us! For information consult the ad in the following page.
