Do you know…..The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic (Taken from Matthew Kelley’s book of the same name)

There are four things that make the difference between highly engaged Catholics and disengaged Catholics. The four signs of a Dynamic Catholic are whether you are ready to let God take your spiritual life to the next level or want to help reinvigorate your parish. Did you know that roughly 7% of the parishioners do mostly everything in the parish and pay almost entirely for the maintenance and mission of the parish? By no means does that mean that the 7% are perfect, but they are at least engaged in their parish.

What do the 7% do differently than the 93% that are disengaged? Here are the four signs that distinguish the two groups.

Prayer * Study * Generosity * Evangelization

PRAYER A dynamic Catholic (or engaged Catholic) has a daily commitment to prayer. God is not distant from these people, but a personal friend and advisor. They try “to listen to the voice of God in their lives and believe doing God’s Will is the only path that leads to lasting happiness…” The 93% pray, but their prayer tends to be spontaneous, but inconsistent, not a daily commitment, or routine. A dynamic Catholic has “a time to pray, a place to pray and a structure to their prayer.” In most cases, beginners develop their routine of prayer painstakingly through trial and error over the course of many years. Habitual prayer could be while sitting in a chair reading the bible, or praying the rosary, or taking a walk and praying, etc. It becomes a habit and done with great discipline in communication with God. Their spontaneous prayer “is deeply rooted in their daily discipline and commitment to a prayer routine.”

STUDY Jesus just doesn’t want followers, He wants disciples. An engaged Catholic spends time learning more about their faith and proactively makes an effort to allow His teachings to form them. We all sit at the feet of someone to learn, why not the feet of Christ? Engaged Catholics believe the “Jesus teaches them through the Scriptures, Chris-tian Tradition and the Church.” They go on retreats, attend missions or conferences, read Catholic books, learn about the saints, watch Catholic television and listen to Catholic radio. They are continuous learners. They also have an element of humility which is a critical element of the second sign (study). The second sign is all about con-tinuous learning, the daily discipline of exploring the way of Jesus and the genius of Catholicism.

GENEROSITY “Dynamic Catholics are filled with a spirit of service and are generous stewards of their time, talent and treaure.” Being generous just doesn’t mean of money and time, but one is generous with their love, appreciation, praise, virtue and encouragement. Their generosity is woven into being good parents, good relationships with their co-workers, and with strangers that cross their paths. They are generous with their virtues of “patience, kindness, and compassion.” It is not a religious requirement, “but a way of life, a way of bringing the love of God to the world.”

EVANGELIZATION “Dynamic Catholics invite others to grow spiritually by sharing the love of God with them.” Highly engaged Cath-olics want others to experience the joy that flows from having a dynamic relationship with God – a personal rela-tionship. Most Catholics are uncomfortable with talking about God. Are you? Have you read a Catholic book, watched a Catholic CD or television program and discussed it with family or friends? You might not think of this as being an evangelist of the faith, but it truly is. It helps others become spiritually alive by discovering and/or sharing the beauty of God and the Catholic faith.

Of the four signs of being a dynamic Catholic, this is the weakest and most underdeveloped of the four. For the engaged Catholic, this is a part of who they are, it is something they do every day. It is a natural flow of the first and second signs (prayer and study). They want to help others to experience the joy that comes from having a vibrant relationship with the God who loves them.

WELCOME BACK !

Welcome back to school from the staff and students at St. Isidore School! For the intentions of all students returning to school this year, we pray:

Faithful companion, in this new school year I pray:

To live deeply, with purpose, To live freely, with detachment,

To live wisely, with humility, To live justly, with compassion, To live lovingly, with fidelity,

To live mindfully, with awareness, To live gratefully, with generosity,

To live fully, with enthusiasm.

Help me to hold this vision and to daily renew it in my heart, becoming every more one with you, “My truest self”.

Amen
