While it is one of the smaller carmakers in the world, Mazda is one of the biggest when it comes to innovation.

The story of its development of the rotary engine is now a legend. The MX-5 Miata was so ahead of its time 26 years ago that no manufacturer has ever tried to compete against it.

The Mazda5 mini minivan was five model years ahead of everyone else in North America with competitors now trying to catch up.

At this writing, Mazda has embarked on its greatest challenge ever, SKYACTIV technology. Mazda is planning to concentrate on the internal combustion engine to produce the cleanest and most energy and fuel-efficient gasoline and diesel engines in the world.

And while Mazda cannot claim to have pioneered the seven-seat crossover utility vehicle (CUV), it is safe to say they saw that lighter was better.

When the CX-9 full-size CUV bowed in 2007, it was different from its competitors, many of which needed V8 engines to push the weight of the CUVs of the time around.

Back then Mazda and Ford were tied together in research and development with the CX-9 and Ford Edge sharing the same general platform with the Edge being strictly a five-seater. Mazda

positioned the CX-9 as the seven-seat alternative to the outgoing MPV minivan.

Ford and Mazda have since gone their separate ways but the CX-9 remains Mazda’s biggest model with seven-seat utility.

And while there are now more large CUVs than anyone can shake a stick at, when it comes to having some enjoyment to go along with the daily commute, the CX-9, like its little brother, the CX-7 CUV, is hard to beat.

That’s because Mazda sees its core value as being “fun to drive” and that is the signature attribute of any Mazda

now and in the future.Then as now there are two trim

levels, the GS and GT (as tested) with one engine, a 3.7-litre DOHC V6 with 273 hp and 270 lb/ft of torque. Also unchanged is the six-speed automatic transmission with “Sport” mode sequential manual shift.

Front-wheel-drive (FWD) is standard on the GS with Active Torque Split All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) optional on the GS and standard on the GT.

The AWD system is of the “slip and grip” kind and, while simple, it gets the job done in all but serious off-road conditions.

The 2011 Mazda CX-9 (GT model shown) is a full seven-seat CUV that doesn’t look like an extended wheelbase minivan or full-size SUV.

Suspension is coil springs and MacPherson struts at the front with coil springs and a multi-link independent system at the rear.

Stability control, traction control and roll over control are standard on both models. A roll over sensor activates the three-row airbag curtains in an emergency.

Both models have as standard a towing package that includes a larger fan and radiator. With the optional trailer hitch, the CX-9 can haul up to 1,588 kg (3,500 lb).

In terms of fuel consumption, the FWD GS comes in at 12.7/8.4L/100 km city/highway while the AWD GT tested here rates at 12.8/9.0L/100 km city/highway.

Where the CX-9 shines is in people and cargo hauling. I still own a 2001 Mazda MPV that continues to give yeoman service in the hands of my daughter. There are times when you need this kind of room and I doubt we could have moved her without it when she recently graduated from university.

To show how times have changed, when my son and daughter were kids, we needed all that space in the MPV to visit friends or journey to Grandpa’s

farm.This time around, my wife’s and my

combined three bags looked puny inside the cavernous interior of the CX-9.

The GT is very well equipped with the aforementioned stability/traction/roll over control augmented by a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, steering wheel mounted controls, telescopic/tilt steering, eight-way adjustable power driver’s seat, rain sensing wipers, xenon headlights, fog lights, blind spot monitoring system, driver’s seat memory, Sirius Satellite radio and 20-inch wheels.

For a full-size CUV, the CX-9 is reasonably light at 2,062 kg.

Mazda makes sure the “spirit of a sportscar” in built into everything it makes and it does come through in a vehicle even as big as the CX-9.

While not a slalom racer, the CX-9 is surprisingly agile for its length and height. Part of this is due its rack and pinion, engine rpm-sensing variable power assist steering plus the compliant suspension.

On the highway during a holiday weekend, I was happy to have the blind spot warning system. The big plus when you pass another car, is an orange

warning light in either sideview mirror. When the light goes out, it means you are safely by and then can signal to get back in the inside lane.

As noted above, the differences between the base GS that starts at $36,395 and the GT is the amount of trim. The GT as tested here with one

option, the voice-activated navigation system with touchscreen and power tailgate, was priced at $48,270.

Yes, there are times when six seats are not enough.

So if a boxy extended minivan or a truck-like SUV is not for you, the stylish CX-9 is a great alternative.

The interior of the 2011 Mazda CX-9 GT will be familiar to any Mazda owner with crisp gauges and amber illumination for better information recognition at night.

Luxury-class grandeur meets compact-class efficiency in the Audi A8 hybrid, which has been given the green light for series production beginning in 2012.

Employing a four-cylinder gasoline engine for the first time in an Audi model at this level, the Vorsprung durch Technik brand’s latest paragon of economy will offer performance befitting its 241 and 354 lb/ft of torque outputs, despite delivering more uncharacteristic sub-148g/km CO2 output and all-electric, completely local emissions-free running at speeds of up to 10 km/h.

The Audi flagship model is designed as a highly efficient parallel hybrid. Its 2.0-litre TFSI engine, which has been modified in some areas, generates an

output of 208 hp and makes a 258 lb/ft of peak torque available between 1,500 and 4,200 rpm.

The combustion engine works together with a disc-shaped electric motor which generates 40 kW (53 hp) and 154 lb/ft of torque.

Audi A8 hybrid can drive at up to 100 km/h purely on electric power and has a range of up to 1.86 miles at a constant 37 mph.

The lithium-ion battery, which weighs 36.7 kg, is located in a crash-proof area in the boot. It provides 1.3 kWh of nominal energy and up to 40 kW of power.

The electric motor and the compact power electronics which serve as a controller between the electric motor and the battery are water-cooled.

Audi confirms A8 Hybrid for series production

Audi is set to launch the A8 Hybrid, which can run at up to 100 km/h on electric power alone.

The 17th annual English Car Affair in the Park rolls into the Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site this Sunday.

Hosted by the Old English Car Club, South Island Branch, the popular car show will be opened at 10 a.m. by the Saanich Peninsula Pipe Band.

In addition to this year’s featured marques, Land Rover and Range Rover, the show will feature many lovingly cared for old English vehicles from Austin to Jaguar to MG to Triumph, spanning many decades.

Live music, prizes and games are all part of the fun through until 3 p.m. Lunch is available from the Central Saanich Lion Club

Goodyear recently updated their entire lineup and introduced the Assurance TripleTred All-Season, a premium tire with three unique tread zones for true all-season traction.


One of the concerns of any North American motorist is driving on rain-slicked roads. Some cities in Canada and the U.S. average more than 100 days of rain or snow each year.

With those facts in mind, the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company recently launched the Assurance TripleTred All-Season, a premium tire featuring three unique tread zones for secure all-season traction. The new tire is now available in a full, 22-size lineup to fit most popular passenger automobiles.

“Drivers everywhere are demanding true all-season traction and this tire brings it,” says Gary Medalis, Goodyear brand general manager. “It is a tire that is right at home in both wet and snowy climates.”

The TripleTred All-Season’s three tread zones work to help deliver traction for drivers. This includes:

• A Water Zone with a sweeping tread pattern that helps evacuate water from the tread for enhanced wet traction.

• A Dry Zone with large tread blocks along the outer edge of the tire to help provide confident handling on dry roads.

• An Ice Zone with numerous biting edges to offer gripping power on icy and slick roads.

Goodyear’s tread design geometry – with an innovative arrow-shaped pattern, and proprietary Wet Zone compound – containing silica and specialized polymers, combine to offer enhanced wet traction for rainy climates.

In the Ice Zone, Goodyear engineers also utilized an innovative polymer composition. Traction-enhancing particles and fibers made with volcanic sand and glass help create a micro-texture that offers enhanced low-temperature traction and overall winter traction.

The new Assurance TripleTred All-Season also features Evolving Traction Grooves, designed to maintain confident traction in rain and snow as the tire wears.

As the tire wears and initial tread blades become more shallow, some of the thin blades actually open up to become wider grooves that help evacuate water from under the tread for better wet traction. There are more than 100 Evolving Traction Grooves on each Assurance TripleTred All-Season tire.

“We discover what consumers truly want, then go to work to create products for drivers,” says Medalis. “With the new Assurance TripleTred All-Season, we sought to provide technology with meaning – innovative features for a premium all-season tire.”

Buick’s Regal offerings will double this fall, with the arrival of the new technologically advanced 2012 Regal with eAssist and the performance-oriented 2012 Regal GS, which are expected to broaden the appeal of the hot-selling midsize luxury sport sedan.

Regal with eAssist will start at $34,190, and Regal GS will start at $42,345. In Canada, Buick will continue to offer the base model as well as the 2.0-litre turbo.

The fuel efficiency boost that Regal with eAssist offers comes from pairing the direct-injected 2.4-litre four-cylinder Ecotec engine with a state-of-the-art lithium-

ion battery system and electric motor-generator that enables regenerative braking capability.

Regal GS has been SAE-certified to deliver 270 hp and 295 lb/ft of torque. GM claims its exclusive Ecotec 2.0-litre direct-injected turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers more torque than Acura TSX V-6, Audi A4 Sport, Lexus IS 250 and Volvo S60 T5.

GS’s engine is mated to a standard six-speed manual

transmission, and gets fuel consumption rating of 7.4 L/100km on the highway.

A six-speed automatic transmission will be available later

in the model year. The GS powertrain is covered by a five-year, 160,000 kilometre warranty.

Porsche has debuted the latest additions to the Porsche Design Driver’s Selection lineup of lifestyle apparel and accessories.

Additions to the product line include a collection celebrating the renowned motorsport heritage of the Porsche 917 and a new line of items made from genuine materials used in the construction of Porsche sports cars.

One such example is the new ‘PTS’ luggage line, which is fashioned from the same cloth used in Porsche 911 and Boxster convertible tops.

Accents on the luggage are made from seatbelt webbing and door pull

webbing from the 911 GT3, Boxster Spyder and Cayman R models. The bags are available in several convenient sizes designed for shopping, weekend trips and for carrying toiletries while traveling.

Other new items include a mouse pad made from the same leather used in Porsche vehicle interiors and an organizer portfolio made from the same leather. The mouse pad is a perfect complement to the new 917 Salzburg computer mouse, which has been designed in the Porsche studio at Weissach.

Other highlights of the list of new items available include a ceramic bank in the design of the Porsche 917/20 – “pink pig.”
