classic car restorer Rudi Koniczek is enthusiastic about the cars that he restores even at the worst of times.

But he absolutely comes alive when he talks about literally unearthing one of the rarest cars in the world from decades of dead storage in a rat-infested garage at a home in Santa Monica, California.

For the past 40 years, Rudi & Company has been one the world’s foremost restorers of Mercedes Benz 300SL roadsters and gullwing sports cars. Owners have shipped cars for restoration from as far away as Europe, South Africa and Japan. He has restored about 100 of these cars and currently has half a dozen under restoration. His shop also restores other special interest cars to concours standards.

He takes a lot of pride in having restored the 1960 Mercedes Benz 300SL bought new in Montreal by Pierre Elliot Trudeau. It was a rush job to be completed in time for Justin Trudeau’s wedding in Montreal. The restoration that usually takes a full year was compacted into eight months. The roadster is magnificent and is part of Canadian history.

The Mercedes-Benz 300SL was introduced in 1954 as a two-seat, closed sports car with distinctive gull-wing doors and the first gasoline powered car with direct injection. Later it was

offered as an open roadster. It was the fastest production car of its day.

The ‘300’ referred to the three litre engine and SL stood for Sport Leicht. From 1955 through 1963, there were approximately 1,800 M-B 300SL roadsters built and 1,383 gullwing coupes produced from 1955 through 1957 in Stuttgart. Gullwing refers to the way the doors lift up.

In that period, the factory turned out 29 very special lightweight alloy body gullwing coupes with Plexiglas windows. These are among the world’s most valued collector cars worth $2.5 million.

Only 28 of the alloy-bodied cars were accounted for. The whereabouts of

number 29 was one of great mysteries that evolved in the classic car world. Koniczek had restored the cars with alloy body number one and six. He knew where all the other alloy-bodied cars were except for body number 21.

Twenty years ago, he heard about a gullwing that had been stored in a garage in Santa Monica for decades. It was a rumour that he and a California enthusiast followed up on over the years.

his late 80s and his garage was packed full of old mainframe computers. The car couldn’t even be seen in the garage.

He hired two men to clear the way to the car. When the gullwing began to emerge from the clutter, it became apparent that the search for the gullwing with alloy body number 21 was over. “I took a magnet out of my wallet and ran it over the car and it didn’t stick,” he recalls of the moment. “Then I knew it was an alloy body and it had to be the missing car with body number 21.”

The owner of the car, Tom Wellmer, had received the new 1955 special alloy M-B gullwing coupe in New York as a graduation gift from his parents. He drove it into the 1970s

until the transmission broke. Then he put the car up on jack stands and began taking it apart. He took the wheels and hood off, the interior out and removed the transmission. And then the car just sat…for more than 40 years.

“This is the ultimate garage find and may be one of the great finds ever in the collector car world,” Koniczek says. “It’s amazing to know that the car had been there all those years without anyone knowing about it.” The gullwing still had the original 1971 black California license plates.

Koniczek guides the restorations with seven full-time artisans and a bevy of other craftsmen who contribute their talents. His mission statement is just three words: Best or nothing. His restorations have won every major award there is. The M-B Museum in Stuttgart features some of the cars he has restored.

There is a row of 300SL cars in various states of restoration including a roadster once owned by Canadian Forest Products founder Peter Bentley. Other cars are receiving body and paint jobs in a downtown Victoria shop.

Koniczek is the ultimate self-made man. An only child, he and his parents came to Canada from Germany in 1953. As a young teenager, he got an after school job in a North Toronto model shop, taking his pay in kits that he would build into his favourite car – the M-B gullwing coupe.

He became a slot car champion building his own cars and competing on basement tracks all over the city. He boldly decided that he had to meet the president of Mercedes Benz Canada to show him his models. So the 15-year-old talked his way into the front office and ended up with

his dream job as a lot boy washing new M-B automobiles and helping salesmen sell them.

The life-changing offer of a full mechanics apprenticeship led to Koniczek becoming Canada’s only ‘factory trained’ M-B mechanic. He began racing cars in his off hours and totally immersed himself in the foreign sports car culture.

But the lure of the West Coast led to a move to Victoria in 1971 where he set up Pacific Competition Development and then Autohaus Victoria in Oak Bay. His clientele expanded from M-B owners to other exotic cars. Rudi & Co. grew from that.

Current restorations include a 1964 Honda S600 sports car with chain drive, a 1937 Packard V12 convertible and a 1935 Avions Voisin luxury sedan built in France that is destined for the famed Pebble Beach concours d’elegance next year.

But the real show is in “the vault.” Three renovated chicken barns house rows of some of the world’s most exotic sports cars. Dozens of world class Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and others are in this amazing collection.

Rudi Koniczek will start the restoration of the ‘missing’ alloy-bodied gullwing early next year. The only stipulation made by the original owner in selling the car was for the rare car to be given a full restoration to look as it did when he took delivery in 1955.

QUEBEC CITY: Every year, there are new words that make their way into our vocabulary.

One of the latest is hybridization and it may very well have been the Toyota Motor Corp. that coined the word.

Toyota started the hybrid revolution about a decade ago with the introduction of its Prius Liftback, a hybrid gas-electric car that has gone on to sell more than three million units around the world, including 23,000 in Canada.

No longer just a stand-alone vehicle, the Prius has been turned into a family of cars with the introduction of the Prius v (pronounced vee for versatility, not five) for 2012 with more models to come.

While some manufacturers look to diesel and others to fully electric vehicles, Toyota sees the hybrid as the way of the future and offers more hybrids than any other automaker with eight currently in the fleet.

In fact, by the 2020s, Toyota aims to have a hybrid in every segment of the market.

Thus, the hybridization of the brand is continuing full bore as Toyota strives to increase its penetration in the Canadian hybrid market to more than the 60 per cent it currently holds.

Although the third-generation Prius Liftback will carry on unchanged for the time being, the Prius v is clearly

aimed at the family buyer. Toyota says the Prius v offers 50-per-cent-more cargo space behind the rear seats than the Liftback and has more cargo space than 80 per cent of the small SUVs in the market.

It is classified as a crossover but one could also think of it as a ‘mini’ minivan as its tall roof and wagon-like rear hatch allow for lots of usable cargo and passenger space.

With the rear seat at its rearmost position, there is 971 litres (34.3 cu ft) of cargo room.

The 60/40 split rear seats also fold down to produce 1,905 litres (67.3 cu ft) and if you need even more room, the front passenger seat folds to handle really long items.

The Prius v has seating for five adults and the rear seats actually travel fore and aft by 180 mm to add to the versatility of the design.

That allows for more rear passenger legroom when needed, or, more cargo capacity when the rear seats are in the most forward position.

I’ve been talking a lot here about interior capacity and versatility because that is what sets the Prius v apart from its Liftback sibling. In a demonstration, Toyota loaded both Prius models with banker’s boxes.

The Prius v held 12 compared to only eight for the Liftback.

Size is not all that sets the Prius v apart from the old Prius.

Interior quality is much improved with soft-touch materials all round and this is a car that starts at $600 less ($27,200) than the original with $1,100 in

additional features. And while it is significantly larger,

the weight is only 105 kg (231 lb) more than the Prius Liftback as Toyota has made use of lighter, but higher strength steel and aluminum.

For example, the hood is 48 per cent lighter by using aluminum instead of steel and a 36 per cent weight reduction was found by using aluminum instead of steel in the front and rear bumper reinforcement bars.

Part of the Luxury Package on the Prius v is what Toyota calls the world’s largest wide-resin panoramic roof.

Made of polycarbonate resin, the see-

through, glass-like roof is two-and-a-half times the size of the one offered on the Liftback and weighs 40 per cent less, while offering 84-per-cent-better heat retention. The roof lets lots of light into the cabin but doesn’t open.

Otherwise, most of the Prius interior is similar to the current third-generation Liftback. The instrument

panel sits mid-ship in the dash with a 6.1-inch display screen below that is replaced by a seven-inch monitor in the Touring and Technology edition.

The seats in the Prius v are cloth-covered in the base model, but a new synthetic leather called SoftTex is used in upscale trim levels.

SoftTex weighs 50 per cent less than traditional leathers and adding to the green theme, its generation produces 99-per-cent-fewer volatile organic compounds. The car itself emits 66-per-cent-fewer smog-forming emissions than the average new vehicle and it qualifies for a Tier 2 Bin 3

emissions rating.At the heart of the Prius

v is the Hybrid Synergy Drive, built around a 1.8-litre Atkinson Cycle four-

cylinder engine combined with a 60 kW high-torque electric motor and a 27 kW battery. It is all controlled by a sophisticated power management system that produces 134 total horsepower and results in a best-in-class fuel economy rating of 4.6L/100 km combined.

My driving partner and I managed 5.7 and 5.4L/100 km in our two combined city/highway driving routes in and around Quebec City.

The system uses an electronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) that routes power to the front wheels. You can

choose from four drive mode selections: normal, EV, ECO and Power.

Even with the Power mode selected, this is a sluggish car that definitely favours fuel economy over performance.

Of course, most customers get into the Prius because of its green technology, and performance for them will not be an issue.

But be aware that when you push the v hard, as we did on several uphill sections, the engine noise is pronounced, in part because of the CVT transmission that causes the engine to rev very high.

We found that EV (electric only) mode works up to about 40 km/h and then the gasoline engine kicks in. This produces a nice quiet ride in slow city driving.

ECO mode adjusts air conditioning settings and throttle for the best fuel economy, but dials down the performance. In most cases, the normal mode seemed to be the best compromise.

While the hybrid system is similar to the one on the Liftback, there have been some tweaks. One is a new exhaust heat recovery system that sends cold coolant after start-up down to the hotter exhaust piping to warm up the coolant faster so that the hybrid system can shut off its gas engine more quickly and realize fuel savings.

Another new twist is a Pitch and Bounce Control System that helps reduce pitching motion in the cabin on rough roads or because of acceleration or deceleration. Here, the wheel-speed sensors sense the road input and adjust the electric motor’s torque output to reduce pitching motion.

In all, it is meant to flatten the overall ride and increases handling performance. I’m not sure I felt the system in use, but I can say the Prius v exhibited a reasonably soft, compliant ride.

The Prius v doesn’t get the short shrift when it comes to safety either. Standard fare

includes a full suite of safety features like stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force district and brake assist plus seven airbags.

Competition for the Prius v comes from cars like the Mazda5, Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagon TDI, and crossovers like the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V.

Ranging from $27,200 to $36,875, the Prius v is pricier than most competitors, but Toyota should have no trouble selling the 4,000 units it plans to bring into Canada.

The versatility, fuel economy and hybrid technology make this a vehicle appealing to buyers wanting to show off their ‘green’ bent.

The current generation Prius Liftback is often a second car, but the Prius v offers roominess and flexibility to make it an everyday vehicle for modern families.

The Prius V will be on sale by the end of October.

Cadillac CUE: Intuitive and Connected Driving in 2012

Cadillac CUE, a comprehensive in-vehicle experience that merges intuitive design with auto industry-first controls and commands for information and entertainment data, will benefit consumers by offering personalized, connected driving beginning in 2012.

CUE, to debut in 2012 in the Cadillac XTS and ATS luxury sedans and SRX luxury crossover, is designed to be unique for each consumer, from the “simple user” to the fully connected “super user.”

Standing for Cadillac User Experience, CUE will pair entertainment and information data from up to 10 Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices, USBs, SD cards and MP3 players with a vehicle infotainment system that reduces complexity through customized information, natural voice commands, fewer buttons and larger icons

For example, most of today’s luxury cars

have around 20 buttons controlling the radio and entertainment functions. CUE reduces that to just four buttons.

It allows consumers to securely store those mobile devices and channeling the information on those devices, along with your navigation tools, weather maps, AM/FM and XM radio, instant messages and emails, through a central portal in each Cadillac, keeping hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

The heart of CUE is the eight-inch (203 mm) LCD touch screen, seamlessly integrated into the top of the central instrument panel and a motorized fully capacitive faceplate at the bottom concealing a 1.8L storage area.

The vibrant LCD screen displays CUE’s home page, which resembles a smart phone’s screen by using large, easy-to-target icons to execute commands.

Capacitive refers to using electrodes to sense the conductive properties of objects, such as a finger.

CUE is Cadillac’s next generation system for information and entertainment data that will debut on the 2012 XTS and ATS luxury sedans and SRX luxury crossover.

While a mini-van wasn’t always in his plans, Marlon Martens, the man behind the Victoria Royals’ play-by-play on the Zone @ 91.3 FM, acknowledges his 2007 Toyota Sienna has some benefits.

With two quickly growing children, the Sienna offered more room – not to mention a DVD player, a favourite feature for Martens, along with the in-steering radio controls.

Favourite memories? “The kids playing with the automatic sliding doors…and being able to haul a couch to storage with it.

“She’s a boat, and slow off the get go, but can really cruise and gun it up hills,” he says. “I never thought I’d be seen driving a van, but it’s sure useful!”

The Infiniti FX concept designed and built for double Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel is to enter production, Infiniti has confirmed.

The star of Infiniti’s stand at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the FX Sebastian Vettel version featured

design, engineering and aerodynamics upgrades inspired by the Red Bull Racing champion and Infiniti Global Brand Ambassador.

The Frankfurt concept car was born out of a conversation between Sebastian Vettel, already an Infiniti FX driver, and Infiniti Chief Creative Officer Shiro Nakamura at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

The 5.0-litre V8 was tuned to provide 420 hp, and with a high downforce aerodynamics package developed by Infiniti in collaboration with Red Bull Racing, the 300 km/h crossover was billed as the most focused and exclusive sports crossover ever built.

Details of the production version including availability, volumes and prices are yet to be confirmed.

We all remember the countdown to Halloween.

It’s a fun occasion when a lot of kids are out in groups and with all the excitement, they sometimes forget about the safety rules.

Here are a few tips for drivers to keep everyone safe on Halloween night and the nights leading up to it:

• Generally, the weekend before

Halloween is a time when parties are common and alcohol may or may not be consumed. Drivers should plan ahead and make sure they have a safe way home. Impaired driving is NEVER an option.

• On Halloween night, it’s best to avoid driving altogether between the hours of 5 and 10 p.m., if at all possible. If you must drive, try to avoid busy subdivisions where most trick-or-treating takes place.

• Avoid using all hand-held devices and keep your radio/stereo/music down so you can hear what is going on around your vehicle.

• Drive below the speed limit in areas where children may be present and scan intersections before driving through them.

• Scan under parked cars to watch for kids darting out in between vehicles and watch all sidewalks and roadways to make sure you know

what is going on around you.

• Keep headlights on and free of mud/dirt so you can be seen by pedestrians.

Many children are so caught up in the fun and excitement they forget all the rules around vehicles.

If we all work together and be extra cautious, we can ensure the safety of all road users on Halloween night!

Fall is the picture-perfect time of year when many drivers take to the road to view the autumn colours.

The leaves are beautiful to see, but when wet or in piles on the roads, they present driving hazards unique to the season.

Be Car Care Aware reminds drivers to prepare for fall driving conditions by having their vehicles’ tires, brakes and wipers checked before heading out on the road.

Tires can affect the car’s ride, handling, traction and safety, and are a critical connection between the car and the road in all types of driving conditions.

To maximize tire life and safety, check the inflation pressure and the tread depth, and inspect the sidewalls for cracks or punctures. As a general rule, tires should be rotated and balanced every 10,000 kilometres.

The brake system is the car’s most important safety system. Brakes are a normal wear item for any car, and brake linings, drums and rotors, as well as

brake fluid, should be checked at each oil change.

To help ensure the performance and safety of wipers, blades should be replaced every six months or when cracked, cut, torn, streaking or chattering.

Windshield wiper fluid should be checked monthly and only washer fluid should be used.

They’re found nearly everywhere – on desks and in break rooms at work, on kitchen tables and counters at home, rolling under seats in cars, on the sidelines of athletic fields and heaped in trash cans and recycling bins.

They’re plastic beverage bottles, and seemingly not of much use when they’re empty.

But not at Ford. Ford is using 25 600 millilitre

(20 ounce) plastic bottles to make the carpeting in every all-new Ford Escape utility vehicle it builds. It’s the first time Ford has used this type of carpeting in an SUV.

All materials – green or not – have to pass extensive durability tests. Sinclair and her team look for “chalking” during these tests – the fibres degrade and mash themselves in to form a white

residue as they break apart. Chalking, or dusting, is the

precursor to a hole forming in the carpet.

The testing is done on a device called a Taber 5150, which looks similar to a record player. A carpet sample about the size of a DVD is placed in the middle and spins while two weights rub the sample to simulate accelerated wear.

Part of the recipe to improve the carpet involves adding more plastic bottles to the mix.

So adding more recycled bottles can help the carpet not wear as quickly, as well as help avoid the Fred Flintstone effect of your feet going through the bottom of your vehicle.

Also helping to mitigate wear is that the carpeting for the new Escape will be backed with cast foam. Cast foam helps reduce road noise and also fills in ridges and crevices for a smoother backing.
