FRANKFURT, Germany: While there was a green theme running through it, the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show was a return to the glory days of splendor and style.

Everywhere you looked, eye-popping vehicles made people feel that in the green days of tomorrow there will still be cars with passion we want to drive.

Perhaps the biggest draw at Frankfurt was the world debut of the 11th generation Porsche 911.

The familiar athletic appearance of the 911 has a 100 mm longer wheelbase, reduced height and up to 20-inch diameter alloy wheels. The 911 Carrera has a new 350 hp 3.4-litre, flat six, direct injection engine and optional seven-speed PDK transmission returning 34.4 mpg.

Also celebrating a world premiere at Frankfurt was the Panamera Diesel powered by a 3.0-litre V6 developing 250 hp. Power is handled by an eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission driving the rear wheels.

FRANKFURT

The 11th generation of the iconic Porsche 911 was a huge draw at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

For me, it was not blood red Italian supercars or cold-blooded German autobahn panzers that stole the show in Frankfurt, but a Euro sports sedan from all places – Korea.

Kia, which can’t seem to put a foot wrong, showed up in Geneva with the GT Concept that, with its 3.3-litre twin turbo direct injection engine and rear-wheel drive, had to shake BMW, Mercedes and Audi.

Of the three all-electric concepts on the Audi stand, the most interesting was the four-seat A2 concept, looking like it wouldn’t take much to put into

production. It features state-of-the-art multi-material hybrid construction plus space-age specifications including contact-free battery charging, by-wire steering and braking, LED matrix lighting technology and a semi-autonomous running mode. Weighing just 1,150 kg, an electric motor is transversely mounted in the front, and delivers 115 hp of peak power to the front wheels via a single-speed transmission. This power output permits a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 93 mph.

AUDIAudi had a huge presence at

Frankfurt, starting with the A8 hybrid that uses a four-cylinder gasoline engine for the first time in

an Audi model at this level, offering performance befitting its 241 hp and 354 lb/ft of torque.

The Audi A8 hybrid can drive up to 100 km/h purely on electric power

and has a range of up to 1.86 miles at a constant 37 mph.

LEXUSThe new Lexus GS 450h full hybrid

made its world debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, marking the start of further expansion of the GS range in the near future.

The GS 450h uses a V6 Atkinson cycle gasoline engine, with a two-motor hybrid system in a front-engine/rear-wheel drive configuration.

Improvements have been made to every aspect of its second-generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system, achieving both significant reductions in fuel consumption, CO2, NOx and PM emissions with performance that is on par with comparable V8-powered rivals.

MASERATIMaserati pulled a full-size luxury

SUV out of its hat with the Kubang concept. Of interest to North Americans is that Maserati said the Kubang will benefit from many synergies from Jeep now that Jeep is part of the greater Fiat family.

MAZDAMazda held the world premiere of its

all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV in Frankfurt.

The CX-5 is the first of a new generation of Mazda products that will adopt the full range of Mazda’s breakthrough Skyactiv Technology and the new design theme, “KODO – Soul of Motion.”

The Mazda CX-5, which evolves Mazda’s hallmark fun-to-drive character, will be progressively introduced to global markets from early 2012.

Unique themes of the KODO design theme include a prominent new frontal treatment with a bolder Mazda family face and more dynamic styling that conveys a strong sense of vitality and agility.

MERCEDES-BENZThe Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG

is the most powerful SLK of all time. Its newly developed AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine features cylinder shut-off combines the ultimate in performance with the best possible fuel consumption. With a peak output of 422 hp, the SLK 55 AMG outperforms all of its direct competitors. MINIThe MINI Coupe made its world

classical three-box structure with a strikingly stepped rear end, the car’s roof has a standard contrasting paint finish, accentuating its distinctive design, while the 280-litre luggage compartment behind the high-opening tailgate reveals impressive functionality.

Other particularly noteworthy interior features include oval recesses in the roof liner, which are specific to the MINI Coupe and emphasize the car’s two-seat design, and the wide through-loading facility linking the cabin and luggage compartment.

SUBARUSubaru had the XV crossover and

BRZ ‘Prologue’ at Frankfurt.The final production version of

the new XV will be underpinned by Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive and advanced Subaru dynamic chassis control concept. Billed as its first

entry in the compact CUV segment, it will be powered by a 1.6- or 2.0-litre gasoline engine that is the first of a new generation of the classic Subaru “boxer” engine architecture as well as the latest version of Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT transmission.

Subaru also displayed an enhanced model of the BRZ, called BRZ Prologue, which will feature an all-new 2.0-litre Subaru direct injection Boxer, developed exclusively for the model.

SUZUKIThe next generation Suzuki Swift

Sport made its world debut with a more aggressive and dignified exterior look thanks to a low-slung form that gives a sense of stability and tension, and a big front grille that evokes a sporty performance feel.

Higher power and lower fuel consumption are delivered by the 1.6-litre M16A engine, which Suzuki developed exclusively for the Swift Sport. The engine is mated to a specially developed six-speed manual transmission, resulting in performance that is both exciting and environmentally responsible.

After a car accident in 2002, JP Lariviere “decided to only drive 4x4s with tires that dwarf most cars, have enough metal and tubing around me for protection and of course, the passion to go where most can’t – off all the ‘normal’ trails Vancouver Island has to offer!”

One of the drivers and vehicles taking to the Tough Truck Challenge course at the Luxton Fair this weekend, Lariviere and “the Reaper” share a fearless approach to the challenge ahead.

A capable, well-built, heavily modified 4Runner, the appearance to most resembles a Toyota truck, however, a closer look reveals the remnants of the old 4Runner body, Lariviere says.

The long-serving vehicle will be retired from offroading for a major overhaul, after this weekend’s event, including a future “with a 350, four-bolt main, fuel-injected power plant, a 700 r4 auto tranny with a Dana 300 and doubler,” Lariviere says.

The improvements aren’t likely to change the truck’s core, though.

“If any vehicle could have a personality, I have to say this one does,” Lariviere says. “It was named the Reaper as it reaps others that dare to follow. It has wheeled where ‘it’ wanted to go…so strap on the five-point harness, put the ARB front locker on, ram both t-cases in low and let it crawl!”

While favourite moments in the Reaper have likely been many, Lariviere recalls a particular highlight from New Year’s Day 2007. To celebrate each New Year, a group of off-roaders participates in the Jan. 1 Snow Run. That year, “when following Mike Bragg in his Jeep XJ up a well-known trail in Shawnigan, the snow was deep, darkness just hit and we were hammering up the elevated trail.”

Both throttled up the trail, with Bragg making it to the top and turning left to a level clearing. But when Lariviere drove his passenger-side front tire up a tree just before the top of the trail, the Toyota rolled softly over onto its driver’s side. “No damage, due to the full exo cage and soft snow – all I could do with the driver’s window open, the cab full of snow and looking up through the passenger door window was reach over, grab the dangling CB mic and radio out to Mike, ‘I’m done!”

All car enthusiasts are invited to bid farewell to summer and welcome the approaching holiday season with the Vancouver Island Mustang Association’s 21st annual Collector Car Toy Run next Sunday, Sept. 25.

An expected 100 participants will meet at the University of Victoria’s parking lot #10 at 9:30 a.m., before departing at 10 a.m. for a one-hour cruise, finishing at the Beaver Lake Picnic Site.

Salvation Army representatives will meet the drivers at the park to collect the toys and cash donations for their Christmas programs.

SPX and Chevrolet Canada have launched SPX Home Charging Installation services for Chevrolet Volt customers in Canada, providing an option that can cut charging times for electric vehicle batteries by more than half.

The Chevrolet Volt contains a 16 kWh Li-ion battery pack that takes about 10 hours for a full charge using a regular

120V outlet. By installing a 240V charging

station through SPX Home Charging Installation, the charge time is reduced to four hours, enabling customers to take full advantage of the environmental and cost benefits, where applicable, of off-peak charging.

SPX provides Chevrolet Volt customers with a one-stop, turnkey solution to select and install the proper equipment to charge their plug-in

electric vehicle, and is the authorized retailer for Voltec electric vehicle supply equipment in Canada and the U.S. As the exclusive provider on the program, the SPX electric vehicle team will manage all aspects of home charging, including home surveys, installations, permitting, inspections, coordination with utilities, and post-installation services.

The Voltec charging station has been designed for residential use with the

Volt, and has an MSRP of $490. As an additional option, SPX will

also offer its PowerXpress charge station to Volt owners.

The PowerXpress has an MSRP of $749, and is available in both a plug-in and hardwired configurations. Installation costs will vary, with SPX offering a range of options depending on home and charging configurations starting at $300. The average installation is expected to cost $1,100.


Volvo Car Corporation and Siemens intend to jointly advance the technical development of electric cars through extensive strategic cooperation.

The focus is on the joint development of electrical drive technology, power electronics and charging technology as well as the integration of those systems into Volvo C30 Electric vehicles.

The first electric cars of this model fitted with Siemens electric motors will be on the test tracks as early as the end

of this year. Beginning in late 2012, the Swedish carmaker will deliver a test series of up to 200 vehicles to Siemens, which will then be tested and validated under real-life conditions as part of a Siemens internal test fleet.

The partnership gives Siemens the chance to extend its industrial leadership in electric drive technology into the automotive market together with a renowned vehicle manufacturer.

Volvo Car Corporation will be relying on proven and efficient Siemens technology for the electrification of its future vehicles.

Siemens electric motors developed for Volvo have a peak power output of 108 kilowatts with a maximum torque of 220 Nm.

The inverter design will be jointly optimized to meet all safety requirements in an automotive application. In addition, Siemens will provide highly efficient and fast on-board and off-board charging systems.

Volvo Car Corporation starts small-scale production of the Volvo C30 Electric this year, and next year the company will start selling the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid.

Road rule reminders for the busy back to school weeksBy Kate WellsdriveWise BC

The first few weeks of back to school can be a busy time for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.

Getting used to school zones once again is proving to be a difficult task for some drivers who still choose to disobey the speed limit in school zones.

School zones are in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday

(school days). If a 30km/hour sign is posted beneath the school zone, motorists must slow to 30 km/hour.

If there isn’t a sign posted, drivers must slow their speed when children are on the roads. This is likely before school starts and after the school day ends, when children are walking to and from school.

Police officers are also on the lookout for drivers who disobey rules regarding school buses.

Drivers MUST stop for school buses when the lights are flashing

and the stop sign is activated. This includes drivers travelling in both directions as children are likely to be crossing the road.

The common misconception is that only drivers behind the school bus must stop, however this is not the case.

Getting caught passing a school bus when lights and stop signs are activated means a $167 fine and three points on your licence.

The message for drivers during the busy back to school weeks: slow

down, obey school zone rules and watch and obey school buses as well.

Toyota Motorsport set a new lap record for an electric vehicle at the legendary 20.8 km Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany.

The Toyota Motorsport EV P001, with 100 per cent electric powertrain and Jochen Krumbach at the wheel, set

a new lap record of 7 mins 47.794 secs to beat the previous lap record, which stood at 9 mins 1.338 secs, by a very substantial margin.

Using two electric motors, the Toyota Motorsport electric car has a top speed of 161 mph.

The new lap record was completed on road-legal tires, using the complete Nordschleife track. It was verified by

independent lap timing.Toyota Motorsport’s target prior to

the Aug. 29 record run was to become the first electric vehicle break the eight-minute barrier and this was achieved comfortably on a day when the notoriously changeable Nürburgring weather stayed fine, although track temperatures were relatively low.

Local 4x4 enthusiasts will rise to the challenge this weekend when the Luxton Tough Truck Challenge rolls onto Langford’s Luxton Fairgrounds.

A Luxton Fair fan favourite, the competition has drivers maneuvering their roll cage-equipped vehicles over man-made obstacles. Competition results are based on points with the driver accumulating the least amount of points declared the winner.

“You never know – every year is different!” says organizer Zillah Erickson, noting that several years ago action included one competitor doing a full back somersault while trying to negotiate the obstacles during his run.

Pre-registration gets under way this Friday (Sept. 16) until 9 p.m. and Saturday morning until event time. The entry fee is $60. All vehicles registered for the Luxton

(4wd) Tough Truck Challenge are subject to a vehicle inspection and participants must sign a waiver.

For fans, the Luxton Tough Truck Challenge gets under way at 11 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $15/adults; $10/seniors & youth age 11 to 18; free for those under 11.

MX, offering entry-level dirt bike rides at the Luxton Fair this Saturday and Sunday.

Bikes range from 50 cc non-clutch bikes for six to nine-year-olds to 80 cc clutch bikes for those age 14 and older. All safety gear is supplied and fees range from $5 to $10.
