World Missions…What &

Where does that mean?

Colossians 4:5-6 “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your

conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt.”

In the church far too often we’ve been conditioned to think “World Missions” is primarily overseas. For many of us we

have grown up thinking that way as well as supporting foreign missionaries and a small percent of us (here at ORLC)

have even had the opportunity to go on a foreign mission trip, such as Canada, Mexico, China, Sudan, Kazakhstan and

a few other places. In a recent letter (posted on the bulletin board) you will see the ongoing mission travels of our

former pastor, Bernie Lutz (’86-’91) What an energetic mission heart God has given to Pastor Lutz. And God has and is

blessing those foreign mission endeavors! During most of my life time the Christians in America have poured much

money, resources and sent missionaries to Africa. The result? Africa is now more Christian than America is.

Meanwhile (and I believe this is Satan’s plan and attack on Christians in America) here in our land our country has

declined (for quite some time) to the point that the majority of our population is no longer Christian. Oh, I believe

Christianity still is the dominant religion in America, but that too is quickly declining. Why do I say that? Apathy, far

too many church members take the Bible, church and Jesus for granted—it is no longer a priority in their lives. Oh its

nice to have a “membership” and somewhat of a connection to Christ and His Church—but Jesus is no longer their

first love. (Revelation 2:4-5). We have let the world conform, mold and shape us (Romans 12:2) to its standards. So

that our idols (the things we make time for, prioritize) have dethroned Jesus as our first love. How can we determine

when something has become an idol? Here is a simple test to personally answer: What things/activities do you do in

place of weekly worship and daily devotions? Go ahead, right now, honestly answer that question for your life. (Pause

to do it now) I would guess your list includes some healthy wholesome activities and projects that “normally” would

be God pleasing… but if they are causing you to neglect your time with Jesus and your walk with Him then you have

sinned against the first and third commandments. These my dear friends are sins that can spiritually destroy a

person… AND they are sins for which Jesus died on the cross, shed His blood for you and me so that we can be

forgiven. So I plead with you, do not take Your Savior for granted—confess these sins to Him and “Rejoice” in knowing

He forgives you and loves you! “Whoever comes to Me I will never drive away.” Says Jesus in John 6:37. Having

confessed, then also look to Jesus, pray to Him asking Him to enable you to rearrange your life priorities so that

1. Daily and weekly time with Him in Worship, devotions and Bible study becomes a priority. That will dramatically

change your life in such a freeing way! You’ll never know until you try it.

2. You begin to see your neighborhood, your family, friends, co-workers, your acquaintances, and new neighbors as

your personal mission field. (North America is currently the third largest mission field in the world during my lifetime

we have gone from #12 to #3 this is not the direction we want to be going. The goal is NOT to be #1).

So indeed may your lifestyle of actions show forth love, kindness, commitment to Christ and His Church. And may our

conversation be full of grace as we share verbally the Good News of Jesus, who He is and what He has done and still

does for us. As we do, the Holy Spirit will be active (just as He is in Africa) for He works through our witness of words

and actions to reach lost souls for His Kingdom. “Lord, lay some soul upon my heart and love that soul through me.

And may I ever do my part to win that soul for Thee.” Amen Pastor Bruce Noennig

If so, join us in this series, Balancing Life’s Demands. You’ll learn how to put “first things first” and find peace in the midst of pressure and adversity. No clichés or quick fixes, just practical biblical insights to help you order your personal world.

True Spirituality: Becoming a Romans 12 Christian

Christians today live in a world that is activity-heavy and relationship light. The result is spiritual emptiness. We struggle to know what God wants from us and for us… and we’re unsure what a real relationship with God really looks like.

But that was never God’s idea. His idea of faith is not about rules or religion – it’s about relationship. That’s where God tells us to start. In Romans 12 God gives us a clear picture of what Christians should look like at the root level. If you’re ready to move from “in” to “all in” then you’re ready to become a Romans 12 Christian. The next steps of your journey toward true spirituality start here.

Beginning on Sunday, Sept 18th we will take an in depth look at Romans 12 at our Sunday morning Bible class in the Dining Hall. Plan to join us and sink your roots of faith deeper into your Savior, Jesus.

MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT

Snacks give kids (and adults) important nutrients and help control hunger between meals. Try these healthy snack ideas.

“Ants on a log” (celery with peanut butter and raisins)

Fresh or canned fruit (canned in 100% juice, not syrup) with

fat-free or low-fat yogurt

Whole-grain crackers with low-fat cheese

Vegetable “matchsticks” (thin sticks made from fresh

carrots, zucchini, or bell peppers)

Whole-wheat bread or apple slices with peanut butter

Quesadillas (low-fat cheese melted in a whole-wheat

tortilla)

Unsalted pretzels or air-popped popcorn

Baked (not fried) tortilla chips and salsa

Whole-wheat pita bread with hummus (dip made with chick peas)

Put fresh fruit in a bowl that’s easy to reach in the refrigerator or on the kitchen counter. This will

make it easier for kids to grab a healthy snack.

Take unsalted nuts and unsweetened dried fruits, fresh vegetables, or fresh fruit in small

baggies.

Pack low-fat string cheese sticks.

Teach your kids to ask before they help themselves to snacks.

Eat snacks at the table or in the kitchen, not in front of the TV.

Serve snacks in a bowl. Don’t let kids snack directly out of the bag or box.

Drink water, milk (fat-free or low-fat), or 100% fruit juice instead of soda or fruit-flavored drinks.

September is “fruits and veggies- more matters” month. Eating fruits and

vegetables has many health benefits. People who eat a healthy, balanced diet with

plenty of fruits and vegetables can help lower their risk for heart disease, type 2

diabetes, and some types of cancer. Eating healthy can also help prevent obesity

and high blood pressure. However, many people don’t eat enough fruits and

vegetables:

Fewer than 1 in 4 adults eat the recommended amount of fruits every day.

Fewer than 1 in 7 adults eat the recommended amount of vegetables every day.

Here are some ideas to help you and your family fit more fruits and vegetables into your day: Keep a

bowl of fruit handy where the whole family can see it. Cut up fruits and veggies ahead of time so

they’re ready for quick, healthy snacks. Challenge your family to try a new veggie or fruit every

week- even brussel sprouts!

If our body is lacking certain vitamins or

nutrients, vegetables are perfect way to

recover them. For example, potato is an

excellent source of Vitamin C and Vitamin B6,

garlic has a lot of Manganese, spinach has

Vitamin A, and cabbage is full with Vitamin K.

Welcome back to school! It is hard for us to believe that summer is gone, our

school aged students are back in school and we are in full learning mode. The children are

excitedly learning about themselves, new letters, shapes and numbers! The teachers have

been busy organizing their rooms and getting ready for the new school year.

Thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed family fun night. It is great to see such

wonderful fellowship between the church and the center. Just a reminder that our

preschool starts September 12 and we do have a few spots if you are looking for a

preschool.

For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1

All bills due in August are paid with one Sunday offering remaining. Ten thousand dollars from the Budget Support account remains in use to keep us current. A portion of that money may be able to go back to the Budget Support account at the beginning of September but large repair & maintenance bills seem to keep cropping up. Council approved at the August Council meeting using $1,500.00 from the Gehrts’ account for budget assistance.

The Cathedral Choir will begin another season on Wednesday, September 7th with rehearsal starting at 6:15 pm in the balcony. Our schedule includes weekly practices on Wednesday nights, sharing music during three Sunday services each month and

enhancing other seasonal worship. Our time together is a wonderful mix of music and

Quilting starts Sept 6th at 1pm in the Dining Hall downstairs. We need a lot of quilters. We have over 100 quilts to tie and sew around. If you haven’t quilted with us before we’d love to have you come. Quilting starts at 1pm and we stop for coffee and goodies around 3pm. Our quilts at Lutheran Island Camp were auctioned off for $80, $65 and $45 for a total of $190 to Lutheran Island Camp. See you on Sept 6th!

Mercy Meals: What is it?

Mercy Meals is a non-profit organization that allows volunteers to package nourishing food

that will be delivered by the Orphan Grain Train to children in need throughout the world.

The food consists of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, chicken flavored vitamin and mineral

powder. One package of food serves up to six children. Please sign up for a shift on the

table in the upper lobby.

“Living a Full, Free, and Faithful Life in Exile” Rev. Fred Hinz, Public Policy Advocate for Minnesota North and South Districts

will give a presentation, “Beyond Trump and Hillary: Understanding the Underlying Issue Driving the Chaos in Our Public Life,” based on Jeremiah 29:11;

‘For I know the plans I have for you’, declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a hope and a future.’”

Rev. Hinz will answer questions such as:

What is it that lies behind this highly unusual election cycle and the increasingly bizarre and rapid changes occurring in our culture?

Why do people seem to divide themselves into such radically different camps as though they were inhabiting two radically different worlds?

Pastor Hinz will offer some insights intended to bring us a greater level of understanding, So

THAT, we as Christians, can better know how to live out our daily lives in this “new world” and

SO THAT we can be more effective in proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ into this chaotic

and confused culture.
