THE RECORD May 2016 VOLUME 55

What about the “Goodness” of Christianity?

My article this month will contain quite a bit of information from the Lutheran Hour question and answer segment (which they always have at the end of their broadcast) of a recent Lutheran Hour radio broadcast. The Lutheran Hour can be heard weekly on Sunday’s at 7:30 AM on KFGO AM and at 4:30 PM on KFNW.

It seems more and more we hear critics question the overall impact of the Christian Church in our world. They assert the church has seldom, if ever, done anything good and instead is responsible for doing a lot of bad things. Two examples that the critics site are the crusades and the Salem witchcraft trials. They seem to forget the crusades ended about 800 years ago and the witch trials occurred toward the end of the 17th century. If the critics took time to do the research they would discover the church did not make the first move! The crusades were attempting to reclaim the territory which Islam had conquered. The crusaders were also seeking to protect Christians who were told they had to convert to Islam or else be taxed or even killed. Without question the Christian armies did some terrible things and they did invent some weapons in the hope war would be so horrible that no one would ever want to start another one… Well that didn’t work as wars and now terrorists and ISIS attacks have become more and more ruthless. Even in the midst of war, Christians have sought to alleviate suffering and uphold humane standards of conduct. More than any other group, it has been Christians who have worked for peace. They have called for nations to come together around a conference table to work out differences rather than on the battlefield. Christians started the Red Cross and have built more schools and institutions of higher learning than has anyone else. Christianity has helped people fight poverty, alleviate suffering, and recover from natural disasters far more than any other organization in history. Christian groups such as Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran World Disaster and Lutheran Hour Ministries are among the first to arrive after a tornado, earthquake or hurricane. And I am told are among only a few groups who stay the course to help long after others have moved on. If you look at television reports you’ll see that Christians are on the front lines helping out (even if a number of the public media fail to acknowledge our presence, we are there). Christianity has built countless hospitals and created a legal system based on equality under the law. In Christianity, a man’s word is not twice as valuable as that of a woman’s. Christians spoke against and helped to abolish slavery and we continue to speak out against injustices such as racism, abortion, and other issues. These are things not every religion can say today. This is just scratching the surface. While Christians are not perfect, never have been and never will be until called HOME to heaven, yet we keep trying. By God’s Grace, Strength and Motivation, Christians have done far more good to honor Jesus and to benefit our fellow man than any other group… so let’s keep at it! Pastor Bruce Noennig

~DCE Mark Noennig

I can’t say thank you enough to all the people who have supplied college lunches, cookies and birthday cakes this past year for the students of the local colleges. Your kindness, thoughtfulness and loving care has blessed them in countless ways including a total of 31 college lunches, 38 birthday cakes and numerous cookies for five Cookie Sundays. Thanks also for welcoming the students and making them feel at home here at Our Redeemer.

Thank You-Gracias-Danke schoen!

“God’s Not Dead 2” the movie “God’s Not Dead 2” came out on April 1st and is a great movie to see if you want to get an idea of what is going on in our country today. Hopefully when you get this newsletter it will still be in a local theater. If not, the DVD will be coming out probably in July/August. Also, we are planning to show it for an “Afternoon at the Movies” probably in October.

Hope Fest If you enjoy contemporary Christian music and enjoy individuals and groups like: Newsboys, Mandisa, Building 429, Crowder, Peter Furler, Mike’s Chair, Jason Gray and Kevin Max. Then Hope Fest is for you! Hope Fest will take place June 16-19 in Detroit Lakes. Tickets for the four day event are $60 until June 1st. For more information and to get tickets go to www.life979.com.

New Bible Class starting on Wed, June 1st we will be offering a new Bible Study called “How We Got the Bible”. It is a 5 part Lutheran Hour Ministries study on how the Bible we have today was put together. The study will meet from 6-7 in the Prayer room.

Organist Back in the days when the church janitor had to pump air into the pipe organ to make it work, Eloise, the new organist, dearly wanted to make an impression on the visiting clergyman with her playing. She wrote a note to the old janitor who had been slack in pumping the organ air and handed it to him just before the service started. But, making a natural mistake, the janitor passed the note on to the visiting preacher, who opened it and read, “Keep blowing away until I give you the signal to stop.”

Cartoon Cutline A family is greeting their pastor after the service. Junior looks up and declares, “My dad says my mom is a pagan because she serves burnt offerings for dinner.”

MIND, BODY, and SPRIRIT

Headline news: “Singing in a choir for just one hour boosts levels of immune proteins in people affected by cancer, reduces stress, and improves mood, which in turn could have a positive impact on overall health”. 1 One hospital has been using choir as an adjunct activity for those going through cancer treatment. One participant said: "Singing in the choir is about more than just enjoyment, it genuinely makes you feel better. The choir leaders play a huge part of course, but so does the support of the other choir members, the inspirational program and uplifting songs. The choir is a family, simple as that. Having cancer and losing someone to cancer can be very isolating. With the choir, you can share experiences openly and that is hugely important." 1

Music can be instrumental () in “reducing anxiety and confusion in people with dementia, improving their quality of life, and is found to be beneficial psychologically and physiological when used in clinical settings.”2 “Listening to music before, during, or after a surgical procedure is beneficial to patients and can significantly reduce pain and anxiety, and decrease the need for pain medication, according to the most comprehensive review of the evidence so far, involving almost 7000 patients.”3 No particular type of music was seen as more beneficial than another as patients were encouraged to choose the music they wanted to listen to. Music is an inherent part of every society- from piano to rap to drum-driven songs, hymns- the list could go on. Since music is such an important part of life, it should not be surprising that the Bible says much about it- the longest book in the Bible is its song book—Psalms. Ephesians 5:19 “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the LORD.” How does music affect your life? Do you listen to music on the radio? Do you play an instrument? Do you sing? Do you find comfort in music? Sometimes when we don’t have the words, music can be the best communication. “Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.” Psalm 95:1

“Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The LORD has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn-shout for joy before the LORD, the King. Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” Psalm 98:1-7

Thank you for your support at our Spring Fling! It was another success; we raised roughly $2500 with part of those proceeds going to support the Wold family.

As usual May is our transition month so we have some staff going and some new staff arriving.

For donations, we are in need of the following:

• Scratch paper to color on (old letter head, old school papers, etc.) • Dramatic play items for the following themes (restaurant, camping, construction). Some example items are

tool belts, sleeping bags, menus, etc. There will be boxes in the lobby by the cross for these items. • Plastic Bags (as usual)

Hope everyone is appreciating all the green that is brightening the earth!

Thank you for your continued support of the CCC.

Angela Wheeler, Director

From the CCC Director Angela Wheeler…

All bills due in April are paid to current with one Sunday offering remaining to cover the remaining payroll for the month. I am using $5,000.00 from the Budget Support account to keep us current. The average weekly offering through March 2016 is $8,904.12 with average weekly expenses of $9,672.14. This puts us in the red for the year as of March 31st showing a loss of $ 9,984.00. I will be out of the office for a few days starting April 20th. I hope to gradually increase my hours to be back to my regular schedule by the middle of May. Cindy Sprouls, Business Manager

The LWML monthly meeting will be May 10th. Board meeting at 12:30pm and the general meeting at 1:30pm.

The LWML meets the second Tuesday of every month in the College room.

We all communicate in many various ways; to name a few: - phone/cell phone - email/web sites - land or postal service - all sorts of printed paper materials (including our monthly newsletter)

There is another mode of communication here at Our Redeemer Lutheran that we could take advantage of. It is the mailboxes in south west corner of the hallway leading to the sanctuary. Most of us hardly ever look in our box. You may not even know your number. I challenge you to check your box, especially now as we celebrate our 75th Year. You may find some surprises there to encourage their use.

Use your boxes for communicating with fellow members: -send a note concerning an activity here or elsewhere -remember another on their birthday, anniversary or just to say “thank you” - a note encouraging another. - plan to receive your ORLC Newsletter in your box instead of the expense of the postal service.

Blessings as you accept the challenge of this way to communicate at ORLC. Darlene Link, 75th Celebration Committee Member Love the Overlooked

(from: Grace for the Moment by Max Lucado)

Put on the apron of humility, to serve one another. 1 Peter 5:5

Servanthood requires no unique skill or seminary degree. Regardless of your strengths, training, or church tenure, you can … love the overlooked.

Jesus sits in your classroom, wearing the thick glasses, outdated clothing, and a sad face. You’ve seen him. He’s Jesus.

Jesus works in your office. Pregnant again, she shows up to work late and tired. No one knows the father. According to water-cooler rumors, even she doesn’t know the father. You’ve seen her. She’s Jesus.

When you talk to the lonely student, befriend the weary mom, you love Jesus. He dresses in the garb of the overlooked and ignored. “Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me – you did it to me.” Matthew 25:40

National Day of Prayer Thurs, May 5 at 6:30 AM in College Room

National Day of Prayer is time for our nation to come together. A time to recall the way our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical decisions. It stands as a call for us to humbly come before God, seeking His guidance for our leaders and His grace upon us as a people.

This is a national annual observance that has been established by the passage of a bill in congress. Let’s take advantage of our freedom to gather in prayer as a nation.

No one has to pray aloud. Enjoy breakfast and fellowship before prayer time. No need to sign up, just come.

Oliver Michael Wold is the son of Michael and Marysa Wold. Marysa is a CCC teacher here. Oliver was scheduled to be born April 5th. As always God knows best and so Oliver was born March 26th by an emergency C Section. In the last 24 hrs while in the womb 80% of his blood was absorbed into Marysa’s bloodstream. As a consequence he was born with “ghost baby syndrome.” Because of the loss of blood, his body did not have the necessary oxygen and his brain suffered major damage.
