THE RECORD May 2017 VOLUME 56

I would guess some of the following thoughts just may have passed through your minds (or discussion topics) in reference to my Maundy Thursday arthroscopic knee surgery: What preacher has surgery during Holy Week? Is Pastor Bruce losing his marbles? Is this a sign of early senility setting in?.... The answer is: A preacher in pain! I had been dealing with this knee since the middle of February. The doctor gave me a cortisone shot so we could go on vacation. That helped tremendously but wore off in three weeks. As the pain came back, it increased daily. After getting the “run around” from the opinions of a couple of orthopedic doctors we finally found one who both listened and could thoroughly explain via MRI and x-rays that what I had was a degenerative meniscus tear and the flap was regularly getting caught in my normal knee function. We had a choice between one opening left in his surgical schedule (April 13th) or waiting until April 28th. Due to the daily increasing pain in my knee it became a “no-brainer” decision. The doctor assured me as long as I kept my duties to preaching that I could preach on Good Friday and Easter (which I did). Then I took the heavier pain meds for thirty six hours and since then have just been on Tylenol. (My three granddaughters had the most boring grandpa for Easter. He just slept.) Progress seemed to be coming along well until about a week after the surgery when I began to run fevers and the knee swelling increased. Since I walked awkwardly it threw off my posture and spine thus resulting in neck pain that continues to be very uncomfortable. More tests showed no “normal infection” and yet the fevers have continued. On April 25th the PA drained off two large tubes of fluid (which returned plus more within twelve hours) and sent it to the lab for a seventy two hour culture study. So as of this writing we are (im)patiently waiting to see what that reveals. This week one of my personal devotional readings reminded me of the Fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23) one of which is Patience. Generally I am a patient person, this time around my scores in patience are “not so hot”. So yes, your prayers are appreciated, needed and cherished. Pray also that God gives Gwen patience with her husband, who has not always been the best patient! I count Gwen among one of the richest blessings in my life, she is a gem and wonderful support to me for forty plus years. I do believe I still have most of my marbles and if I’ve entered early stages of senility, people are being polite and not telling me! God willing I will soon be back to full strength. Our staff has been and is wonderful in covering much of what I’m not getting too. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 Your “hop-along” Pastor! Pastor Bruce

More AdAM & eve

The story of Adam and Eve was being carefully explained in the primary Vacation Bible School class. Following the story, the children were asked to draw a picture to illustrate some part of the story.

Little Emily was most interested and drew a picture of a car with three people in it. In the front seat behind the wheel was a rather large man and in the back seat a man and a woman.

The teacher was at a loss to understand how this illustrated the lesson. But little Emily was prompt with her explanation. “Why, this is God driving Adam and Eve out of the garden.”

Thank You to the members of Our Redeemer for touching the lives of the college students in so many ways this past school year. Your kindness, thoughtfulness, and loving care have been a blessing to them. This past school year a total of 27 college lunches were served. Four “Cookie Sundays” with bags of homemade cookies, and over forty birthday cakes were made. I still have more to deliver in May.

Colossians 3:23-24 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

ThAnk You!!

New Summer Hours

For college students that are here this summer, we will switch to our summer worship schedule on Sunday, May 28th. Beginning May 28th we have one Sunday worship service at 9:00 AM and Wednesdays at 7:30 PM.

The Message Board In an effort to provide a silent sermon to the neighborhood, First United Methodist erected a message board on the front lawn. As a result of a congregational contest, the following (unoriginal) messages were selected. “Free trip to heaven. Details inside.” “God so loved the world that He did “Try our Sundays. They are better than Baskin-Robbins.” Not send a committee.” “Searching for a new look? Have your faith lifted here!” “Fight Truth Decay—Read the Bible!” “People are like tea bags—you have to put them in hot “If you are headed in the wrong direction, water before you know how strong they are.” God allows for U-turns.” “Running low on faith? Stop in for a fill-up.” “The best vitamin for a Christian is B1” “If you can’t sleep, don’t count sheep. Talk to the Shepherd.” “Soul food served here.” “No God—No Peace. Know God—Know Peace.”

THE RECORD May 2017 VOLUME 56

MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. During the month of May, all adults are challenged to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. Physical activity provides long-term health benefits for everyone! By being active, you will burn calories that you store from eating throughout the day and—it can be as easy as walking the dog or as rigorous as running a marathon. Providing opportunities for children to be active early on puts them on a path to better physical and mental health. It's never too late to jumpstart a healthy lifestyle. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults:

• Aim for 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. Moderate activity includes things like walking fast, dancing, swimming, and raking leaves.

• Do muscle-strengthening activities – like lifting weights or using exercise bands – at least 2 days a week.

Physical activity is for everyone. No matter what shape you are in, you can find activities that work for you. Together, we can rise to the challenge and get more active during the month of May! Being active doesn't require joining a gym. Look for ways to increase your heart rate during your daily routine. Walk or cycle instead of taking the car or bus, or you can choose the stairs over the escalator or elevator. Try these ways to be active and start working towards your fitness goals to jumpstart or maintain a healthy lifestyle: replace coffee break with a brisk walk, wash the car, take dance lessons with a friend, walk the golf course instead of using a cart, swim with the grandkids, join a recreational sports team, or rake leaves and work in the garden.

There are many health benefits to being active for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, but you should consult your physician before starting a new activity program. If you haven't been active in a while, start slowly and build up. Do what you can; some physical activity is better than none.

Did you know the Moorhead park system is made up of over 40 regional, community, and neighborhood parks, a variety of facilities, and miles of sidewalks and trails? From the CCC Director Angela Wheeler…

I want to thank everyone who supported the CCC during the Spring Fling. It is always fun to listen to and watch the children sing. We are on our way with raising funds for our school age playground. I want to say a HUGE thank you to my board and fundraising group that organized the Spring Fling. I know a lot of time and energy went into the organization of this event. THANK YOU!!

We have a lot of projects currently on going in the center. We are working on the secure wing, the painting of a couple of rooms, staff work/break room, infant playground, pre-k playground and school age playground; just to name a few things. Please pray that funding and volunteers will fall into place for these projects.

Angela Wheeler, CCC Director

April Showers brings May Flowers…or at least we hope! I love watching the earth wake up and become green again with spring; I think it infuses me with fresh energy. I also love spending as much time outside as possible and love seeing the center children playing outside.

Easter Bags for Churches United

Thank You, Thank You, to everyone who donated to our Easter bags for the children. Twenty one bags were given out. Thank You to Carolyn Lichtsinn who sewed “Jesus Loves Me” on the bags and Sonja Beltz who sewed the bags.

Quilters

Do you need a quilt? The Quilters will be done quilting May 10th. The quilts we have made will be displayed on the pews May 10th & 16th.

If you would like to purchase a quilt see one of the quilters. Thank You to everyone for a wonderful year!

Gracious & Loving Father, You have created each of us, and have given us this great gift of life. Help us to treasure each moment, the happy ones and the sad ones, the healthy ones and the weak ones. When our lives are running smoothly, help us to turn to You in thanksgiving and praise. When our lives are in turmoil, help us turn to You for comfort and strength. By Your Word, assure us of Your loving presence in our daily lives. Keep us ever mindful of Your loving promise to always be with us. We pray now for these fellow members of Our Redeemer:

CCC School Age Playground Fundraiser

The Christian Children’s Center is working to provide a state of the art school age playground for our children at the center that will last a lifetime. This will enable our school age program to expand and ensure the metal equipment will be durable and we won’t need to be replaced after 6 years. Below is a picture of what we would like to put in on the Northwest corner of the field that is located to the East of the CCC. If you would like to contribute to this project, buy a piece of equipment (see price list below), buy a section of fencing, or donate pea-rock please contact Kelsey Brovick in person, by email [email protected] or phone 701-261-9475. If you have any questions Kelsey will be happy to discuss the project with you. Thank you!

God is good…all the time. So, after six days of blessings- Come, give thanks, and be equipped to meet the next week in a

Christ-like way.

As was his custom, (Jesus) went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day…(Luke 4:16)
