Remembering Our Veterans

To quote Dan Lipinski, U.S. Representative from Illinois. “On this Veterans Day, let us remember the service of our veterans, and let us renew our national promise to fulfill our sacred obligations to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much so that we can live free.”

Morningside RV Estates remembered their veterans (American and Canadian) by having a program on Nov. 11 at their clubhouse. Approximately 170 residents attended with 40 veterans being honored for their service. After the ceremony a dinner consisting of soup, bread, pie and beverages was provided by the parks’ activity committee and management.

Thank you to all veterans worldwide! Forty veterans from both near and far were honored by the residents and staff of the park.

The New River Library may be closed until spring for updates to their building and street, but their activities for all ages are continuing. You may see them at the Zephyrhills senior center, the YMCA, the Zephyrhills library or at one of the local senior parks.

On Tuesday they stopped by Ramblewood Village to teach a class In rock painting. The subject of the day was a cactus in a flower pot. We had 15 residents participating. Our next class will be on ebooks.

Go to www.pascolibraries.org for a full listing of their activities. They are willing to schedule future classes in other parks.

Students socialize while waiting for supplies and instructions.

Grand Horizons Recognizes Their VeteransOn Nov. 9, 75-80 residents gathered at

the community center for a Veterans Day tribute put on by Jim Leitzke. He does this every year and each presentation gets better and better. It was nicely done and quite informative, and he and Judi provided doughnuts and coffee for everyone beforehand. The doughnuts were provided by Marcie Baker and we thank her very much for it.

Jim started off the presentation with a lovely article called “The Veteran.” It mainly said that it is not the preacher, reporter, poet, nor the campus organizer, the lawyer or politician who has given us our freedoms, but it is the veteran. It is the veteran who salutes the flag.

We then had the pledge of allegiance

to the flag where we all stood and we paid tribute to Paul Crook and Bill Peters who both had served in World War Two. During this time each branch was recognized and flags were brought up front. After the pledge and the tribute, we were shown a video and heard a recitation of “Ragged Ole Flag” by Johnny Cash. We had heard this before but never saw the video, so this was a first for many of us. It seems like the video brought everything into prospective.

Jim went on to talk about the Ronald McDonald and the Fisher House, explaining their histories. These houses are for families of patients receiving medical care. There are a total of 86 houses and each house provides 8-21 suites.

Next, we had a presentation and explanation of the POW/MIA table. As

each article was placed on the table, an explanation was presented. For example, a glass that is inverted is to remind us of the comrades that cannot be with us. The picture that is placed on the table reminds us that they are missed very much and the chair that is empty reminds us that they are not here. It was such a beautiful, moving dedication.

After this each branch was recognized and as the name of the branch was called, the people who were in that branch stood

while the others sang the appropriate song. There were six branches and they consisted of the Army, the Marines, the Navy, the Air Force, the Coast Guard and the Merchant Marines. There was also a flag for the MIA/POW.

We ended this dedication with the entire audience singing “God Bless America.” At this time, they retired the flags or colors while the audience remained standing. It was a lovely afternoon and our thanks go to Jim Leitzke.

The colors of all seven branches were displayed with pride. Photo by Marty Rubenstein

Flags from multiple branches of the military were displayed, plus the MIA/POW.

Hillcrest Red Hats Kick Off Their 2019-20 Season

Last Thursday, 28 women gathered at the Golden Corral for lunch completely decked out in their signature red hats and purple clothing ready to get back into the swing of the 2019-2020 social season here at Hillcrest. November hosts, Loretta Colwill and Gail Plaunt, had selected the place for the lunch last spring when they signed up to host. Then over the past year they kept their eyes open for a dozen small but fun little gifts that could be given out during a drawing while the group was gathered together for fun, fellowship and a good lunch.

The International Red Hat Society was formed about 20 years ago with the express purpose of bringing

women over 50 together simply to have fun – to reconnect with old friends, make new friends, and get away for a bit from all of the “duties” of life like jobs, homemaking, and volunteering. It is meant to be a time to just let go and have fun. And fun they had, especially after being scattered up north for the past six months, and now are back to spend the winter with their many snowbird friends.

Thanks to Queen, Mary Lou Murray, the organization has monthly hosts for each of the six gatherings in a season, and all the new lady residents within the park get an invite to join the group. It has been a great way to bring all or residents together and help to make this park the friendly one that it is. Just look at all the smiles!!

Dining Out With Valleydale RO

We started our Tuesday off with a “coffee hour,” complete with donuts, for about 85 people; then on Wednesdays, a group gets together at the Village Inn for supper and pie. It is always fun when you don’t have to cook or clean up.

Our summer residents started a new tradition of having

a brunch at the clubhouse. It went over so well that we will be continuing this for a monthly get together. Nov.16 was our first brunch of the new season and was hosted by Peter and Carol Simon and their helpers, Pat Robinson; Barbara Fitzgerald; Althea Gaumont; Gert Ceminski; Christine and Steve Divish; and Lolly Schave. 57 residents attended, and there were a lot of great, hot dishes and plenty of sweet rolls, donuts and fruit for all to eat.

That evening we also had a chili supper prepared by Gayle and Phil Teri, followed by a movie at the clubhouse. 37 residents came to chew and view’ nobody will go hungry around here!

It’s a good time for chili now that the weather has turned chilly, and it is so much fun to enjoy all the good cooking that we have in our park.

Carol and Peter Simon hosted our delicious brunch.

A few of our members hit Village Inn every Wednesday for tasty supper and a slice of pie. Gayle Teri and Althea Gaumont whipped up the chili for our movie night.

Janice E. Mills BauerBAUER, Janice E., passed away on Nov. 6, 2019, after a short battle with ovarian cancer. Born Dec. 20, 1947, in Waverly, N.Y., her family moved a couple times before settling in Tampa, where she attended grade, middle, and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1965. In February 1969, she met the love of her life, Roger, who was stationed at MacDill Air Force Base. The two married Oct. 22, 1969. When Roger was discharged in January 1970, they moved to Keeneyville, Illinois, where he grew up. Eventually they moved to Schaumburg, Ill., in 1973, where they raised their four children. She finally convinced him to move her back to Florida in 2004, where she enjoyed her palm trees and sunshine. She was our rock and will be missed so greatly by everyone whose life she ever touched. She had special nicknames for all her “Grandbabies”, if you speak to one of them, ask, and they will tell you. Our lives from this point on will never be the same, but our thousands of memories will live on forever. Her husband, Roger Bauer, survives along with daughter, Denise Bauer DiLeo and husband Guy; son, Ken Bauer and wife Ann Marie; son, Rich Bauer and wife Natalie; son, Tim Bauer and wife Melissa; two grandchildren who affectionately called her NaNa, Anthony and Alexandra DiLeo; eight grandchildren who lovingly called her Grammy, Ashley Thompson Velazquez (Edwin); Dominique Bauer; Gabrielle Bauer-Olson (Andy); Whitney Bauer; Elizabeth Bauer; Jacquelyn Bauer; Nathan and Liam Bauer; and two great-grandchildren, Lucas and Luna Velazquez; her mother, Mildred Mills; sister, Sandra Mills Stephens and husband Melvin; nieces, Sherrie Knighton and Tracey Stephens Murphy; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
