After coming off a hard loss against Springstead last week, the Pasco High School girl’s basketball team triumphed in a win against Hudson, 45-26. The game was high energy as the Cobras gave their all on their court. However, they were no match for the Pirates. Notably the Pirates’ sophomore Evelyn Randall was spectacular moving the ball down court and drawing fouls from the Cobras’ defense. Defensively the Pirates pushed hard with an excess of eight rebounds being taken by senior Timariya Lee. She was pivotal in keeping turnovers at a minimum while she reserved a constant position under the Cobras rim. By halftime the pressure of the Pirates’ defense began to show as the Pirates built a 14-point lead at 24-10. Aggressive movement of the ball, pivotal play execution and disruptive defense helped the team hold onto the lead moving it further in the second half to a 19-point lead. Pearl Harbor Survivors To Attend Ceremony

Charles McClelland and Cecil “Wig” Wigmore will be honored during a Pearl Harbor remembrance program to be held Dec. 7 at the Museum of Military History.

McClelland and Wigmore are the remaining two local survivors of the infamous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that occurred 78 years ago this coming week.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt characterized that attack as “unprovoked and dastardly.” It claimed 2,403 American lives while injuring 1,178 others and plunged America into World War II.

Plans call for a skydiver with an oversized version of Old Glory to drop down from a plane above the Zephyrhills Municipal Airport at 11 a.m.

A folded regular sized flag will be raised to begin the ceremony, also at 11 a.m.

Members of the Zephyrhills High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps will be on hand along with museum volunteer Cliff Moffett.

The veterans will be introduced following the Pledge of Allegiance and

brief remarks will then be made about the two survivors.

McClelland was raising the Union Jack on the bow of the U.S.S. Helena when the attack occurred at 7:48 a.m. Hawaii time and a torpedo hit the light cruiser he was serving on.

The resulting explosion caused McClelland to be knocked to the deck, breaking his leg in two places. He was transferred to the Naval hospital in Hawaii and then to San Francisco before being reassigned to the Helena once he had recovered from his injuries.

Wigmore joined the Army Air Corps at 19 to find a new life. He had been in an orphanage since his father died when he was young and his mother couldn’t provide for him. Wigmore thought he was going to be relaxing at the beach when he learned he was being sent to Pearl Harbor.

Although he was trained to operate a .50 caliber machine gun, Wigmore was assigned to headquarters at Fort Shafter in Honolulu because he had learned to type while in boot camp. He said at previous Pearl Harbor Day events that he couldn’t believe the devastation to Pearl Harbor.

Numbers Are Dwindling Since Infamous Attack 78 Years Ago

EASTPASCO Senior NewsFeeling Fine At 99

Louise Slingerland sat in front of her birthday cake in the Hillside Mobile Home Park Clubhouse. She huffed and she puffed and managed to get one of the two candles out. She reached over and pinched the lit wick in her fingers and sat back down.

That was a testament to the spirit of Slingerland at the age of 99.

Her secret? “Hard work and clean living is all it takes,” Slingerland said.

Looking younger than many of the

dozens of guests at her party Sunday, Slingerland looks back at her 99 years with pride boasting about her four children and her husband of 63 years.

In 99 years, there was a lot of joy in her life, but her happiest day was Sept. 4, 1943 when she married her husband, the late Robert Slingerland. The two were married in New York and eventually migrated to Zephyrhills as snowbirds in 1986 and became permanent residents in 2000.

“They were always together,” said

Louise’s daughter Barbara Slingerland. “If you saw one, you saw the other. You never heard them argue. They didn’t raise their voices. We had a lovely childhood. We had their support no matter what we did.”

Louise is a proud graduate of Alfred University where she studied art. She maintains her painting skills to this day as she fills her home with her work.

She never sat still. She sold Avon for

several decades, served as a tax collector and worked in the vineyards tying and picking grapes.

Louise hasn’t slowed much.“She is involved in everything here at

the park,” said Joni Garant, one of the park activity directors. “She supports absolutely everything. If there is a dinner going on, she’s the first one there to help. She is loved by everybody. She is our prized possession.”

Make a wish. Louise Slingerland blows out her candles on her cake as she celebrates her 99th birthday Sunday at Hillside Mobile Home Park.

Loving The Florida Life

After we retired, we came to Florida for the warm weather. Well, we found out there is much more to the state than just the heat. It is a lifestyle. If you want to visit the seashore, it is just an hour away. If you want adventure, it is here in Zephyrhills at Sky Dive City. History is all around us, and you can find something new to see every time you take a ride. We found this lovely, fun retirement park, filled with wonderful, fun people who, like us, are not native to Florida, and we learn so much from each other.

This week started out cooler than

normal, but it didn’t stop activities from happening. Shuffling has started up again on Monday, even though you had to put on a heavy sweater to play. The bean bag group was out on Tuesday having a wonderful time. Even the pool was being used for exercise. Being able to get outside everyday is a blessing and keeps us all fit. We enjoy walking in the park in the evening, stopping to chat with others out doing the same thing. If we are really energetic, a walk in one of the county or state parks is just the thing.

We plan on enjoying something each and every day we are here in the Sunshine State.

Till next time.Despite the cold, the pool was the place to be for Aquasize, pictured here with Gloria, Mary, and Pat.

Submitted by Dotty Copeland Valleydale RO

Shufflers Pat, Larry, Carol, Rose and Dean all brave the cold for the sake of the game. Bean bag toss and other activities are keeping us all in shape.

Grand Horizons Relives The Roaring TwentiesOn Nov. 16, a fabulous show went

on in our community center. Nearly 65 people came to enjoy the musical stylings of Sally Langwah. She started the show by performing several songs from shows and, while singing, browsed through the audience and sang to all and shook their hands.

The songs were sung to perfection and it was quite enjoyable. She performed a tune from the soundtrack to The Great Gatsby called “What’ll I Do” while she danced with a gentleman from the audience. Both the song and the dance were beautiful and brought back so many pleasant memories.

Sally then brought out her husband, Roy Langwah, who did a great job as Elvis. During this time he performed “C C Rider”

as he walked through the audience. He came out to perform every time that Sally went to change into another outfit and did a great job filling the time. After his first number was through, he introduced Mae West. Sally, performing as Mae West with the perfect accent sang, two more songs: one from 1927 called “After You’ve Gone” and the other from 1926 called “Baby Face,” which she crooned to several men. I could just visualize the dancing on this with the Charleston going in all directions and feet moving back and forth.

As mentioned previously, we got to see Elvis again and this time he performed the song, “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and, boy, was the emotion written all over his face. He sang this to several women in the audience and presented them with a lei. After that lovely performance, he

introduced Julie Andrews (none other then Sally). She came out with a maroon flouncy dress with a maroon boa and hat and long pearls to perform a song called “Five feet 2, Eyes are Blue” and did a marvelous job of it along with Ilene Nutting dancing.

Elvis was called out once more and he sang “Be My Little Good Luck Charm” while he slowly walked through the audience to give out more leis. He also performed later in the show, the hit songs, “Now and Then There’s a Fool Such as I,” “Teddy Bear,” “Little Sister,” and “The Wonder of You.” He made sure that all the women in the audience got a lei to take home to remember the performance.

In the meantime, Sally came out to perform Betty Boop and called on twins

The “Betty Boop” triplets, Sally Langwah, Dolene and Maxine, gave us all a good show. Sally as Connie Francis singing a few of her hits.

Maxine and Dolene from the audience to aid in her skit which involved two wigs and two boas exactly like the ones Sally was wearing. Together they performed the song, “I Want to be Loved by You,” and

even received a medal for participating and being the perfect triplets. Sally (Betty Boop) also sang “Button up your Overcoat.”

Sally also came out as Marilyn Monroe (a.k.a. Dumb Blond) and told a joke that had everyone laughing. She performed a

couple of songs in her beautiful black dress and ended up singing “Happy Birthday” to Ron Gamache as he is the president of the social club and we all know that Marilyn loves to sing to presidents. Ron was certainly flustered!

Connie Francis was also there and Sally came onstage with a silver flouncy dress and a silver head band and sang “Who’s Sorry Now” as some couples danced. Next came Cher with her long black hair, who told a joke that had the audience in stitches. Sally went on to sing a couple

of songs such as “Makin Whoopee” and “Ain’t She Sweet” before ending the show as Liza Minelli in a beautiful gold lame dress singing “Toot, Toot, Tootsie, Goodbye” and “Cabaret.”

After the performance was finished, we held a contest for the ones who came in costume. They were all so good that they all won!

The show was over but Sally stayed to sing some more while everyone danced. All in all, it was a good night and one we’ll never forget.

James F. Brinkley Sr.BRINKLEY, James F., Sr., 82, of Dade City,

passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on Nov. 17, 2019. He was born in Asheville, N.C., to parents James and Thelma Brinkley of Asheville, N.C., who preceded him in death along with a sister, Joy and brother, Jack. Jim graduated from Hendersonville High School, Class of ’56 and attended The Citadel. He was also a veteran of the United States Air Force. His passions were about sports and auto racing, and both were things he excelled at himself. He was voted into the Hendersonville High School Football Hall of Fame in 2005. He quarterbacked for the Air Force while enlisted and drove (and built) all types of race cars his entire life. His professional career was spent as a service director for Chevrolet dealerships. He was recognized by General Motors for his outstanding leadership many times and served on their SE Regional Council. His wife, Frances, survives along with children, Jim Jr. of Tampa, David (Joe Whitt) of Louisville, Ky., Bryan (Peggy) of Seminole, and Michelle Allegood (David) of Zephyrhills; his brothers, Kenneth (Judy), Richard (Gloria) and Gary, all of Ocala; three grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, many loving nieces and nephews and a special relationship with our forever Dona. A memorial gathering was held Nov. 24 at the U.S. 301 Chapel of Hodges Family Funeral Home in Dade City.

Clarence BuzzellBUZZELL, Clarence, 82, of Zephyrhills, passed away on Nov. 11, 2019. Clarence was born on Aug. 21, 1937, in Presque Isle, Maine, to parents William Buzzell and Henrietta (Shaw) Buzzell. He was a truck driver for Moosehead Furniture and Scott Lander until he was 81 years old. His loving wife, whom he spent 46 wonderful years with, Janet Buzzell, survives along with one son, Clarence Buzzell Jr. (Karen); three daughters, Jeanie Ames (Alan), Maydean Kimbel (Jim), and Annie Edgerly (Ronnie); one stepdaughter, Naomi Plante (Dan); nine grandchildren, Amanda, Timothy, Dylan, Dalton, Christopher, Courtney, Caleb, Alicia, and Corey; and nine great-grandchildren. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. Hodges Family Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ronald HitzelHITZEL, Ronald Raymond, 83, of San Antonio, died on Nov. 17, 2019, at AdventHealth in Wesley Chapel. He was born on May 14, 1936, in Buffalo, N.Y. He and his sister, Margaret, were the children of Raymond and Loie (Fields) Hitzel. He grew up in Buffalo, N.Y., attending PS 53 for grammar school and later attended Buffalo East High School with aspirations of joining the U.S. Navy. In 1954, he was awarded a Navy ROTC scholarship to the University of Rochester and studied Metallurgical Engineering. After college, Ronald worked at Diamond Saw Mill where he met Barbara Ann Uschold. They were united in marriage on May 31, 1958, in Buffalo, N.Y. They started to grow their family in Alden, N.Y., up until 1969, when a new job with Howmet Corporation relocated Ronald, Barbara, and their five sons to Lake Tranquility, N.J. In 1973, they added a sixth son. Ronald was very active in local township politics as a committeeman and served as a Scout Master in the Boy Scouts. He was nicknamed “Blacktop” which referred to his ability to crush the softball in the lake league. He was an avid Buffalo Bills fan best known for his exciting screams of “Go Man Go!” whenever a Buffalo player would get in the open field. He is famous for his expression of impatience which is, “OK Pack It Up!” In 1990, Ronald suffered the tragic loss of his beloved wife Barbara to cancer and grieved for many months. Ronald would retire from Howmet Corporation and go on to marry Beverly Jean Case. The new couple would relocate to Murrells Inlet, S.C., and then onto Prescott Valley, Ariz. Ronald started a new career with Beverly working as a real estate agent. Unfortunately, Ronald would again suffer the loss of his wife as Beverly passed away from cancer in 2016. Being alone out in Arizona, he relocated back to the east coast to be closer to his sons. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his sister Margaret Bilz of Buffalo, N.Y.; his six sons, Jeffrey and his wife Kristina of Lake Tranquility, N.J., Chris of Newton, N.J., Steven and his wife Mei of Hopewell, N.J., Tim and his wife Melissa of Lawrenceville, N.J., Ronnie and his wife Debbie of Waxhaw, N.C., and John and his wife Laurie of Dade City; Beverly’s sons, Eric Dennis of Prescott Valley Ariz., and Bodie Dennis of Flagstaff, Ariz.; and Beverly’s mother, May A. William M. StedingSTEDING, William M., 86, of Syracuse, N.Y., went to be with our Lord on Nov. 8, 2019. His wife of 52 years, Nancy Steding (Manuel), survives along with his children, MaryLou (Ed) Mills, Roberta Welch, William (Kate) M. Steding II, Shelley (Ron) Sadler and Pam (John) Parsons; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His son, William D. Carlton (Rusty), preceded him in death. He drove double-bottom tractor trailers in the Northeast for 42 years, retiring from UPS in 1996. He was a member of the Pennellville United Methodist Church, NY; an active member of the Zephyrhills Moose Lodge #2276 and a retired member of the Teamsters Local 317 in New York. His hobbies included boating, motorcycling and, in his younger years, drag racing. He always loved the water and as a teenager in the 1940s he would spend many a summer weekend giving tours on Oneida Lake in his classic wooden boat. In 2019, the Syracuse, N.Y. Post Standard, wrote a story about the legalization of drag racing in 1959 at the NYS Fairgrounds. The big winner of that eventful day, the “Top Eliminator” with the fastest speed, was William Steding. He was an avid worker and could always be found tinkering in the garage or starting a new project. With his quick wit and sense of humor, he made friends wherever he went. A memorial service will be held later this spring at the Pennellville United Methodist Church, N.Y. Donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Dade City or the American Lung Association. Hodges Family Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
