year. We have to fix the offense. We need guys to make more baskets. It’s that simple.”

Senior Ronnie Webster’s 15 points led the Pirates.

Zephyrhills pulled away offensively

with 21 second quarter points to take a 37-25 lead into the locker room at halftime and never looked back.

After the third quarter, the lead was extended to 56-36.

Coupled with a 52-44 victory last month, the Bulldogs swept the Pirates this season.

points in the first quarter. It was the second time in the previous four games, and sixth time in the season, that Pasco was able to eclipse 50 points in a game.

Unfortunately for both teams, the game was plagued by 57 fouls – 26 on Pasco and 31 on Zephyrhills – hobbling the pace of the game.

The Bulldogs shot 16 of 34 (47 percent) from the free-throw line while the Pirates went 19 of 46 (41 percent) from the charity stripe. Four players fouled out: freshman Taija McCollaugh for the Bulldogs and juniors Shawntavia Tucker, Emme Cameron and Hallie Farrell for the Pirates.

McCullough led the Bulldogs in scoring with nine points in the losing effort.

The Pirates return home tonight to face off against Wesley Chapel (5-13).

The Bulldogs will again play at home, hosting a strong Fivay (17-2) tonight.

Local Roper Tall In The Saddle

San Antonio native Spunk Sasser won the 2017 Yeti World Series of Team Roping rodeo competition on Dec. 10 in Las Vegas.

Sasser, and his teammate Daren Sims, worked together in an unlikely turn of events leading up to the competition.

“I knew him (Sims), we were pretty good friends. We had roped together a little bit and I’ve known him 20 years,”

Sasser said. “He was not my steady partner though. He had actually qualified with someone else and I had qualified with someone else and my partner couldn’t go and his partner couldn’t go so we just entered together.”

Team roping is the only rodeo event that features two contestants working in tandem, made up of a header and a heeler. The header ropes the horns of a steer then the heeler ropes the steer’s hind legs. Once the ropers have stopped the animals and face each other, time stops.

To qualify for the World Series event, contestants must first win or place high enough at various other national competitions.

The World Series of Team Roping this year featured more than 500 teams from around the country and the Sasser/Sims duo left them in the dust.

“At a rodeo, you have to beat 30 to 100 teams varying on the rodeo, so your chances of winning there are better if you’ve got to beat 100 instead of 500,” Sasser said. “In my opinion, any time you beat 500 contestants at anything, you’ve been pretty successful.”

After making it into the top 40 in the Las Vegas event, Sasser and Sims sat atop the field entering the 17th round and after their turns in the saddle 16 other teams still had to compete.

“I had told my partner that we needed to step our game up and try to make a fast a run as possible,” Sasser said. “We drew the right steer and we were 6.1 on our last steer, which was really fast out there and we put the pressure on them other guys and it made them have to be really fast.”

Sasser and Sims finished in first place by just 0.26 seconds.

“Spunk has always been a leader and a great role model in the arena,” local roper Mack Brock said of the champion. “There was never a time where he wasn’t

giving great advice or offering his help to everyone around him.”

Sasser and Sims won $238,000 in the competition along with belt buckles and a statue.

According to The Roping Journal, Sasser remembered his father who lost his father Sept. 28.

“He told me on his dying bed, ‘I did not raise no doctor.’ He told me ‘I want you to rodeo. I want you to promise me that you will go,’”Sasser said.

“I know he was with me today.”

Manatee Rules 20th Tough Team Duals In High School WrestlingManatee High School manhandled the competition on

Jan. 13 at the 20th edition of the Tough Team Duals.Pasco High School hosts the annual tournament in a

team against team matchup that determines the winner. The Pirates competed but did not qualify for any

victories because of forfeits in the weight classes they were giving up. Other schools competing were Zephyrhills, Gulf, Auburndale, Sunlake and Weeki Wachee.

Manatee did not lose a match. The closest bout for the Hurricanes was against

Auberndale, ending at 42-39. Zephyrhills lost to Manatee by a team score of 72-9, the biggest spread of points in

the tournament. In wrestling, team points are awarded as such: six

points for a pinfall, forfeit, or disqualification; five points for a technical fall (where a wrestler gets ahead of their opponent by 15 points); four points for a major decision (winning the match by 8-14 points); and three points for a decision (winning by fewer than eight points).

Kumquat Race A Fun Run

Dade City Youth Council hosted its second 5K Kumquat race on the Hardy Trail last weekend in the run-up to the city’s 21st annual Kumquat Festival.

“They used to have the Kumquat Race years ago, but they didn’t do it for a while, so we’re bringing it back,” organizer Mark Pinson said Saturday.

At this point, the race is less competitive, and more of

a community event. The race is a five-kilometer trail starting at the east

end of Church Street and ending at the Hardy trail, steps from the starting line.

The first place finisher of 73 registered runners was Neil Clements with a time of 20:32. Finishing in second and third place were brothers Jason and Jaxon Alonso. The brothers are 11 and 10-years old, respectively, and finished their runs in 23:20 and 26:19. Supporting his sons was Jason Alonso. He was watching the length of the Hardy Trail visible from the finish line when his two

sons rounded the corner to finish in the top three. “They love it. Jason plays soccer and he’s constantly

running,” Alonso said. “It’s basically a family event, their mom runs with them when she can.”

The boys are members of a running club at Academy at the Farm.

Despite just finishing the race, both brothers were still walking around, chatting with their friends and playing on a group of rocks near the entrance to the Hardy Trail.

“We just like running,” the boys chimed in unison.“[It] makes us feel good, makes us stronger,” Jaxon

said. “Our coach asks us if we want to run it and we always say ‘yes’. I don’t think we’ve missed a race that the club has been in.”

If you missed it this year there’s always 2019, when Pinson said the race should take place around the same time.

Clerk & Comptroller’s Office Hosting Free Shredding EventIn celebration of Data Privacy Day

– Jan. 28 – the Pasco County Clerk & Comptroller is hosting its inaugural “The Big Shred,” an opportunity for area residents to see their sensitive, outdated documents reduced to recyclable confetti. The events, scheduled for consecutive Saturdays (Jan. 27 and Feb. 3) at Pasco’s courthouses in New Port Richey and Dade

City, respectively, are free.“Data privacy is increasingly

important,” said Clerk & Comptroller Paula O’Neil. “We want our customers to take every precaution to protect their identities. We believe taking time to shred documents that are no longer needed may be expensive and/or time-consuming. We’re happy to provide this

service that can provide peace of mind to our neighbors at no cost.”

Partners Shred 360 and Covanta have combined to provide a shredding truck for two hours – 10 a.m.-12 p.m. – at each location, or until the truck is full, whichever comes first. Visit Pasco is lending its expertise, beginning with an admonition regarding paper clips, staples,

clasps, clamps, and other metal collecting agents. In short, remove them.

Participants may bring up to five boxes (no larger than banana crates) or five tall kitchen trash bags, or a combination of both, for shredding. The Clerk & Comptroller’s Office is lining up volunteers to help transport boxes and bags to the shredding truck.

Glenda P. ‘Dallas’ DunnDUNN, Glenda P. “Dallas” (Booth), 70, formerly of Dade City, passed away Dec. 14, 2017, at her home in Webster. Glenda was born in Suwanee, Tenn., on April 20, 1947, to William Milton and Ada Ruth Hendry, who preceded her in death. She spent most of her life in Dade City until marrying Darrell Willis Booth and eventually moving to Texas where she dedicated her days to being a homemaker, wife and mother until she returned to Florida to live out the remainder of her life amongst friends and family. Glenda’s interests included sewing, needlework, crocheting, macramé and furniture upholstery. Using the love of the latter, she was able to enhance her income until her final days. These one-of-a-kind crafts can be found inside many of her family’s and friend’s homes. She also enjoyed antiques, gardening, music, spending time outdoors and sharing her time with her loved ones. Roller skating and dancing were two of her favorite physical activities and she was amazing to watch as she’d enjoyed these immensely. When she was not outside, she loved to watch movies with her dog, Bubba, by her side. Her unwavering love of God and her church was evident in her dedication to several religious ministries and countless Bible studies. Glenda is survived by four children: Christina “Tina” Marie James (Booth), 54, of Phoenix, Ariz., and her husband, Terry Bick; Damon Wayne Carson, 52, of Dade City, and his long-term partner, Jessica Knight; Jonathan Jason Booth, 51, of Houston Texas, and his wife, Kym Alvarado Booth; and Katie Michelle Booth, 49, of Phoenix. A son, Darron Lee Booth, was born in 1966 and preceded her in death in 1987. Also, six grandchildren, Lauren Marie Cusimano, 32, of Phoenix; Sean Lee Bourgeois, 28, of Jackson, Mich.; Matthew Thomas Kendrick, 28, of Tampa; Rachel Marie James, 23, of Phoenix: Jonathan Dean “JD” Booth, of Houston; and Austin Barclay Booth, 6, of Houston, survive. One grandson, Charles Dennis Booth, was born in 1986 and preceded her in death in 2003. Also surviving are four siblings, Louise Hendry of Dade City; Sheila Ann Jones, 64, and her husband, Theodore “Ted”, of Dade City; James “Jim” Milton Hendry, 69, and his wife, Diane, of Wilsonville, Ore.: and, Ruthie Marie Sedicino and her husband, Patrick “Pat”, of Spring Hill. A sister, Mildred Ruth Melton, who was born in 1944. of Inverness, married to Lloyd, preceded her in death in 2014. Several nieces and nephews, and other relatives also survive. Delina I. MooreMOORE, Delina I. (nee Young) was born May 2, 1924, and passed from this life Jan. 15, 2018, after a long, hard-fought battle with Alzheimer’s. Delina was born in Millfield, Ohio, and her family moved to West Virginia when she was a young girl. That is where she met and married Bill. They moved with their two children to Dade City in 1957. In addition to raising two children, Delina often worked two jobs to help support her disabled veteran husband. They both worked intensively with VFW Post #4283, helping ensure that veterans received benefits and recognition. Delina loved to read, to sew, and to cook, and nothing made her happier than having her family around her. She is probably best remembered for her loving heart, her willingness to help, and her sincere ability to forgive. An infant daughter, Janet Elizabeth, preceded her in death along with her husband, William E. “Bill”, and a granddaughter, Brittany Christine. Her daughter, Ladina and son, Jerry, survive. A graveside service was held Jan. 22 at Chapel Hill Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made

to the Alzheimer’s Association. Ways to donate as well as helpful information regarding this disease may be found at act.alz.org, Hodges Family Funeral Home handled arrangements.
