match at W.F. Edwards Stadium riding high after a 2-1 defeat of Mitchell High. But they quickly realized they were in a battle with the Lady Pirates.

The Pirates opened the scoring in the 25th minute on a Kadlub header off a feed from teammate Rachel Hillner’s free kick.

Two minutes later, the Gators’ Sam Epifanio deposited a goal past Pirate goalkeeper Hannah Frum to tie the game at 1-1.

“The rest of the game was a battle of each other’s defenders,” Hernandez said after the hard fought match.

“It’s a tie and not a loss, lesson learned,” Land O’Lakes coach Vicky King said. “They played with 10 people in the box, so it’s hard to penetrate,” he added.

“We played very well all-around and we had many chances throughout the whole game to score but we just couldn’t get a shot into the net,” Hernandez said following the match.

The Pirates will return to the practice

field this week in preparation for the grueling district tournament.

“We must be physically and mentally ready,” Hernandez said.

in August by playing in travel ball tournaments in central Florida and ended in December when they finished 1st in their division.

Coach Newton says his team practices on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Burkes Park where they work on the baseball fundamentals, pitching and hitting to stay on top because the world of travel baseball is an ever-changing entity.

Some of the local players on the Young Guns include Boomer Newton, SS/2nd base; Quentin Sandoval, pitcher/3rd base; Dalton Duncan, catcher/3rd base; pitcher Angel Miles and catcher Jordan Reynolds.

The Young Guns played in about nine tournaments during the fall season finishing with a 19-19 record, but scored enough points to give them the overall top spot in the 11U bracket.

“The players must maintain good grades and must be great citizens of the community,” coach Newton said and he checks their report cards throughout the season.

“Having being a former travel ball coach myself, the ultimate goal for any travel ball team is to make the players better fundamentally and for them to obtain a college scholarship and the long shot to one day become a professional player,” he said.

Coach Newton said the team is always looking for any financial support from any businesses that would like to sponsor the Young Guns and coach Newton is always looking for new players to add to his squad.

Call Newton at (352) 206-8338 for information on team tryouts or sponsorships.

Pasco Falls To Unbeaten Sunlake

Sunlake High remained unbeaten following a 3-2 comeback win against Pasco during their Jan. 11 soccer match at W.F. Edwards Stadium.

The Seahawks (20-0-1) continued their dominance on the season but not after facing a scrappy Pirate squad that dropped to 12-3-1 after the Sunshine Athletic Conference battle.

Pasco led 2-1 before Sunlake struck twice the last four minutes of the match.

On both goals, Seahawk Eduardo Ordaz redirected a corner kick from Guilber Ramo-Toscano to beat goalkeeper Zachary Balogh.

Pasco had the only score in the first half when Oscar Mendoza headed in a goal from a corner kick delivered by

Jason Nicolette in the 40th minute.Sunlake tied the score on a Trevon

Michael header midway through the second half, but three minutes later the Pirates grabbed the lead back on Alex Montes’ goal.

The Pirates clung to their lead but couldn’t prevent the Seahawks’ late surge.

“We possessed the ball the whole game, but Sunlake was able to pull ahead late in the match,” coach Gary Grayling said.

Both teams have qualified for 3A district playoffs, but since Pasco is in the 7A district and Sunlake is in 4A, the Pirates won’t get a shot at revenge in the playoffs.

The Pirates will host the Class 3A District 7A Soccer Tournament starting Jan. 23 at W.F. Edwards Stadium.

Boys Can’t Quite Hang On

Pasco was leading Sunlake 2-1 before the Seahawks scored twice in the last four minutes of the game, taking the win.

Excitement Grows At SMARTstart

A lot is going on at SMARTstart, so much that the program may already be running out of space in its relatively new home.

Created three years ago by the Pasco Economic Development Council, SMARTstart gives a leg up to entrepreneurs who are in the process of launching their own businesses.

The program was hatched at the Dade City Business Center and in late July moved to its current site at 37837 Meridian Ave.

“We love this new space and it is accommodating us very well,” program director Krista Covey said.

She added that so much is going on at SMARTstart that it is going to need more space again shortly.

“We’ve got a robust program and we’re here to help graduate entrepreneurs. We can help entrepreneurs … when they just have an idea for the business and need help validating whether or not they should move it forward, and eventually they will hopefully learn to grow their companies and outgrow us.

“We want them to go occupy existing space in downtown Dade City or build a building,” Covey said.

There are up to 10 totally affiliated members at the new location. “We have some beautiful offices that our entrepreneurs are able to grow into,” Covey said of the downtown location.

SMARTstart members pay a monthly fee based upon the size of the office that they have. “We pay the utilities and we also provide the Wi-Fi. We also have printers, copiers, all of that,” Covey said.

The offices were carved out into different sizes to accommodate members for anticipated employee growth.

“We will be full and then as we graduate more members we will have room for new members,” Covey said.

Not just members use space at the SMARTstart office; other people, who are referred to as coworkers, also work out of there, Covey said.

“Coworkers are not our members necessarily. They’re just here using the space. Sometimes there’s a handful of coworkers and sometimes there’s a lot of coworkers,” Covey said. Some stay as little

as one day or for as long as a week.Government and business leaders

gathered at the SMARTstart offices last Friday for a ribbon cutting and open house.

Mayor Camille Hernandez expressed her gratitude for the program prior to the ceremony.

“It really is an evolution. We know by making it better for SMARTstart it just makes businesses better and it makes the community better.

“I want to personally thank you publicly for all that you do,” Hernandez said to Covey.

Florida Hospital Heart Expo Is Just A Heartbeat AwayIndividuals who are interested in learning about heart

disease prevention and management are encouraged to register for Florida Hospital Zephyrhills’ (FHZ) free MEGA Heart Expo from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, at the East Pasco Seventh-day Adventist Church, located at 7333 Dairy Road in Zephyrhills. Doors open at 8 a.m. and light refreshments will be provided.

According to FHZ, this is the largest heart education program the hospital will offer in 2017. Besides

a heart health fair, attendees can participate in complimentary screenings including blood pressure checks, a complete lipid profile to determine one’s cholesterol, leg and vein screenings and EKGs. One must schedule an EKG appointment when making their Expo reservation.

Additionally, six cardiologists will give presentations on heart disease prevention, atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, sleep apnea and its effect on the heart, coronary and peripheral artery disease, and venous disease. There will be time for questions after

each presentation. The MEGA Heart will also be on display and

attendees are encouraged to take a guided tour of the world’s only portable, inflatable, walk-though heart exhibit. The MEGA Heart is 26 feet long, 16 feet wide and 13 feet high. Visitors enter through the largest vein that feeds the heart, called the superior vena cava, and exit through the aorta, the largest artery that leaves the heart.

Reservations are required for the Expo. Call (877) 534-3108 for information and reservations.

Lacoochee Celebrates MLK Day

Close to 100 people hiked down Cummer Road from U.S. 301 toward the Lewis Abraham Boys and Girls Club in Lacoochee, as about 25 groups took part in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Choirs and church groups sang as they marched alongside sororities, non-profit organizations and the Dade City Police Department, to name a few.

“It brought the community together. People were coming out of their houses to see the people marching by,” said Pasco County Sheriff’s Cpl. Jessica Ziegler, the area’s Officer Friendly. “Kids were waving. It was a good spirited event.”

The commemorative walk was just the start of the day’s activities. Once participants reached the club at 38724 Mudcat Grant Blvd., they funneled inside to listen to Pasco Hernando State College’s President Timothy Beard discuss the history and importance of Dr. King.

According to Zeigler, Beard’s “powerful” speech focused on the community’s involvement with children, especially at programs like the Boys and Girls Club and he encouraged attendees to be positive members of the community.

“He talked about planting the seed and about how important it is to plant the seeds of education and hard work in children,” Ziegler said. “Even after they are planted, we still have to water those seeds and take care of them. He was eloquent. Very inspiring.”

After Beard’s speech, the MLK Day committee served a picnic in the park. Community members pitched in for the

occasion, resulting in all picnic supplies and food being donated through the various organizations.

Monday’s events were preceded by a community breakfast, held Saturday morning at the club. The full breakfast included pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausage,

and everything in between. Local churches provided entertainment. Ziegler said about 250 people attended the free event, which asked for a $10 donation to benefit a Martin Luther King scholarship fund. It was not known at press time how much money was raised through the breakfast.

Youth from the Victorious Church of God in Christ, Lumberton, acted out a praise dance as part of the program.
