St Petersburgs biggest outdoor theater tradition opens again Friday with a rich and modern musical look inside a culture Performers Justin Gregory Lopez Renata Eastlick and Christie Prades each have a personal connection to the popular show

In the Heights is about a community of first- and second-generation Americans living in Washington Heights dealing with issues of rising rents lack of job opportunities and struggles at college The Grammy Award-winning soundtrack uses hip-hop salsa and other Latin musical sty les to tell intimate family stories of change in the sweltering New York summer

Justin Gregory Lopez got the call from American Stage to play Usnavi the neighborhood bodega owner after getting a nod

from a pretty high place He helped Lin-Manuel Miranda the writer of In the Heights workshop his newest Broadway play Hamilton A staff

member from that workshop recommended him to American Stage Ajaunt to st Petersburg for this professional piano bar entertainer feels

like a vacation while doing something I love

The ladies have worked together before but youre new to the group How are you finding your new cast mates

Because this show was written by Latinos for Latinos it was only a matter of time before we

worked together Seriously Latino (actors groups) in the theater community are very small There arent really many shows that showcase us and our communities and what we

do I mean it was West Side Story or bust for a while So unless you can spin three times and kick your face - and I cant do that - Im not going to be in

that show

Working in Florida is certainly different from New York Any concerns about the outdoor stage setup

Its so beautiful here and Im over the moon about that set When you walk on stage it feels like a rock concert But because this show is such a family

thing and because the music is so infectious youre going to want to dance Youre not going to want to sit down and youll move your body The set is

almost as big as an entire block in New York City Its huge Its going to be warm but luckily this story was written during the summer

What was it like moving from your town to the Big Apple

Im from the mountains actually in Jersey People dont believe it actually exists It does The Appalachian Trail actually ran like almost through my back yard Its a five-minute walk Im from a small town rural area New

York City was really strange like a scary leap It was an enormous culture shock When youre right out of college and youre young youre like This is

great Theres anything to do whenever Its exhausting So I moved back to

New Jersey just outside New York

courses when I went to up for classes at Miami Dade so the only that were left were music and another humanities theater course The first I was in theater I had a teacher She looked me 0h crh t in the eyes and You look like theater

And I Yes And I took that as a weird theater ever since

I love character voices I love Lisa Loeb because I did a show that she wrote I loved her as a kid and you know how she

into voice) You say I hear what I want to Im obsessed with cartoons and shes all and I love her I do cartoon character voices that I create to entertain And I love

with crayons It calms me down I will alwavs bring a uwt and color for like 10 or 15 minutes

Its so cool to see how different - its the same story - but how different the actors portray each character but how they keep them so similar Everybody who touches the stage sharing this story becomes family Everyone stays in touch Its such a small world in theater for Latinos

You only had the role of Vanessa under your belt when you left for New York That gave you the push

I actually have never said this and I realized it while I was in New York Im a big family person Im very close to my family I have all my friends in Miami As much as I wanted to do music and everything I never really had that extra

push to go really really wholeheartedly toward my dream of pelforming and everything Playing Vanessa and having this opportunity present itself to

me without it being expected I got that push and I got that drive from her story and her drive to get out of Washington Heights and be something more than what she is in her hometown

Its so cool to see how different - its the same story - but how different the actors portray each character but how they keep them so similar Everybody who touches the stage sharing this story becomes family Everyone stays in touch Its such a small world in theater for Latinos

You only had the role of Vanessa under your belt when you left for New York That gave you the push

I actually have never said this and I realized it while I was in New York Im a big family person Im very close to my family I have all my friends in Miami As much as I wanted to do music and everything I never really had that extra

push to go really really wholeheartedly toward my dream of pelforming and everything Playing Vanessa and having this opportunity present itself to

me without it being expected I got that push and I got that drive from her story and her drive to get out of Washington Heights and be something more than what she is in her hometown

MIAMI April 29PRNewswiremiddotUSNewswirelmiddot- Suitcases packed theyre on their way to Broadway not just to give their regards but to conquer it Thirteen graduating seniors from Miami Floridas New World School of the Arts (NWSA) theater division having attained their Bachelor of Fine Arts degree through the college s four-year Arts Program are set to perform a New York Showcase at the Snapple Theater Center Tuesday May 4th starting at noon The presentation offered to industry insiders eager to discover new talent welcomes agents artistic directors casting directors and other theater experts who every spring anxiously await NWSAs young theater and music theater actors for a first look at the best trained rising stars entering the profession Thats part of what students look for in a high caliber prestigious theater program - to be showcased at that level says professor Gail Garrisan who teaches acting and directing at NWSA and coordinates the event We are at the forefront with other prominent acting schools such as Yale School of Drama Carnegie Mellon School of Drama and North Carolina School of the Arts which also showcase their acting students in New York she adds

VVhat happens is the following The graduating college seniors begin rehearsals by 9 am Each actor prepares to display his or her own unique talent as an individual artist At noon they present a full show with costumes monologues song and scenes One by one they take the stage and wow an audience of 40 to 50 industry professionals

The incredible experience of performing in NY City is what drives our excitement assures Renata EastliCk one of the students attending This showcase culminates the four years of training at NWSA and will be our crowning achievement she explains while Tyrone Davis showcased by NWSA in 2007 comments Im not sure what was going through my mind - it was exciting and nerve wrecking The NWSA alum is currently set to be the understudy for Donkey as well as three other characters in the national tour of the Grammy Award-winning musical Shrek The showcase gave us an idea of what they [agents and directors] are looking for They want to see you in this kind of setting not in a play but in your best light not always in character

The NWSA New York Showcase also includes an evening presentation the same day At the beginning of each showcase every professional will get a talent template of our students a full portfolio with pictures and resumes They can then check off who they want to see We then say to each student you have interest from this or that agent The following day agents contact them for appointments so they spend the next couple of days following up with the people interested in them indicates Garrisan

The day of the showcase can be euphoric yet grueling In between the noon and evening performances the young actors are also offered a master workshop by showcase consultant Mari Lyn Henry co-author of the definitive industry must-read How to be a working actor New World School of the Arts is a renowned and wellshyrespected resource for some of the best working actors in this country Since Patrice Bailey [Dean of NWSAs Theater Division] started the showcases a few years ago a number of the grads have secured representation and made very good connections They have also been able to reconnect with NWSA alumni says Henry

Shrek actor Davis will be cheering for his alma maters new graduating actors on May 4th I wish you couldve seen it last year They were just as good as some of the performances Ive seen in NY if not better he insists According to him NWSA may not have the funding might of other conservatories but it makes up for it with passion and imagination Im so thankful the faculty was there to nurture us as human beings They were just so important in developing the person I am today I dont think theyll ever know the impact theyve had on my life as an individual and actor sorry Im getting a little teary eyed Davis drifts emotionally for a moment and sumsshyup I just can t wait to get rich so I can give so much money away to the school Rich is the experience of attaining a university degree from New World School of the Arts in Miami Florida
