period ended to start the Pirate rally. Travis Knowlton rolled to a 13-1 win to pull the Pirates closer at 28-16.

Consecutive pins from Jack Evans (139), Jacob Thornton (145), Kevin Johnston (152) and Devin Jernigan (160) put the Pirates ahead 40-28. And a major decision for Savion Spaights (170) and a forfeit for Chance Kluber (182) made the winning margin at 50-28.

“The kids were wrestling tough,” said Pasco coach Dan Knowlton. “We were missing a few weight classes, but from 128 on up, we’re pretty solid.”

The Bulldogs had their share of early-season success, but the loss to the rival Pirates is humbling.

“We had a lot of success real quick with a young team,” said Zephyrhills first-year head coach Daniel Fleshood. “As a team, this is humbling. For me, I don’t like to lose, but to help us redirect our focus, maybe we needed this.

“You learn more from a loss than a win. We learned a lot tonight.”

Savion Spaights works to get the pin against Zephyrhills’ Timothy Flett in the 170-pound match.

Kevin Johnston of Pasco handles Zephyrhills’ Jacob Ryser in the 152-pound match.

Defense Keeps Pasco At Bay

Zephyrhills’ stingy defense proved to be enough to cripple Pasco 53-20 Friday night at the Dog House in Zephyrhills.

The Bulldogs’ relentless defense held the Pirates scoreless in the first quarter and to just six points in the second half. Pasco’s offense was on track in the second quarter where it scored 14 points thanks to seven points from Evelyn Randall.

Pasco coach Jason Dargahi watched his Pirates play the worst game of the season and believes that the team needs to work on keeping control of the ball.

“When we were getting pressure, we were turning over every time,” said Dargahi. “I can see if we were getting pressed by athletic girls, but we were throwing it all over the place against the zone. This is the worst game we played.”

“Give Zephyrhills credit, it’s something pretty good to beat us that bad. Not much to take from this one. I won’t watch the film of this one.”

Zephyrhills held a 16-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 30-14 advantage at the half. Bulldog Mercedes Krueger scored eight of her 13 points in the first half. Taija McCullough added 13 points for Zephyrhills.

“I try to tell the girls all the time, people love offense, but we have to play defense,” said Zephyrhills coach Chris Smith. “We are just good enough offensively, but if we play great defense, we can do anything. I think we could have given up fewer points.

We relaxed a little bit and made errors and they scored some points.”

When Zephyrhills and Pasco square off, it become more than a game. It becomes the 9-Mile War. Winning the war equals bragging rights between these schools.

Smith knows the significance of getting a win against the Pirates. More importantly, it is a critical district game.

“Anytime you play Pasco, both teams could have a losing record and it’s going to be a heck of a game,” Smith said. “I’m glad the girls came out and we had a great start. We tried to do the same in the second half and jump out on them at the start and it worked.”

The win pushes Zephyrhills to 7-5 on the season while Pasco drops to 4-5.

Webster continued to lead the way for the Pirates (2-7 overall) with a game-high 25 points.

The Bulldogs had three players in double figures.

“That’s been the way we played the last couple of games,” said Pasco coach Willie “Poncho” Broner. “We’re still working for a full 32 minutes. Sometimes in there you have those droughts. That’s one of the things we’re working on. We need to lessen those droughts.”

The game was part of a four-game basketball marathon Friday night with the JV and Varsity Boys and Girls teams squaring off. Zephyrhills scored the sweep of all four games. The Lady Bulldogs varsity dominated in a 52-20 win. The boys’ JV registered a 38-28 win while the JV girls’ squad cruised to a 49-5 victory.

“It’s a long day, but to see such a big crowd like this is great for the kids and it’s always good to beat Pasco,” Novak said.

Christmas Is All Around At Valleydale ROAs I walk around the park, I can feel the Christmas

spirit everywhere. Everyone is smiling and sending Christmas cheer to all who go by. The homes are all decorated effectively and at night it is so bright and cheery. The front entrance is bright and welcoming. Our clubhouse has been beautifully decorated by Sandy Tarbell with help from her elves.

Our Christmas bike parade was held on Dec. 20, and we had eight hardy souls brace the chilly weather. On two-wheel bikes rode by Shirley Kolden and Murray Summers and in a golf cart was Gert Whittaker, a lady in her 90’s, who was not afraid of the cold. In an electric scooter was Gary Lunn, and rounding off was our three-wheel bikes were Marge Summers, Diane LaCourse, Carol Simon and Rhonda Larson. They rode around the park and passed by our reviewing stand, headed by Al and Lolly Schave and lots of others to

cheer them on. Refreshments were on hand for all. It was all vey festive.

We see lots of visitors, coming to spend this special time of year with relatives. It is so much fun to see little

ones visiting grandparents. They remind us of what is so wonderful about this season. It is for caring and sharing, love and joy for all.

Merry Christmas to all. Till next time

A sizeable group came out to view the parade. Our parade contestants were ready and raring to go.

Christmas And Togetherness At Grand HorizonsDec. 13 found 55 residents enjoying

a meal at Texas Roadhouse. The outing was hosted by Sandy Lindke and Greg Thomas and our sincere thanks go out to them for a wonderful job. We had a separate room for the bulk of our folks and a few others were in the other room right around the corner. We may see each other every day but there is always something new to talk about.

If you have never been to Texas Roadhouse before, let me tell you that they have a varied menu and something for everyone, plus all the peanuts you care to eat. Also, everything is always done to perfection. The waitresses are always very nice and willing to help you out if you have any question. Of course, the meal was so huge that several people took home doggie bags.

On Dec. 15 several women met at the community center for a game of cards or dice with Rita Gattos. We had a fun time starting off with “Ten Thousand” (played with dice) and the time just flew by. At certain points of the game, if you roll a specific number, then your entire score is wiped out. After that game, Rita taught us a new game (played with cards) called “7.” We had a wonderful time learning the game and whoops of laughter and cheering could be heard. I truly hope this activity continues and that eventually we can learn more games.

The holiday season is upon us and Grand Horizons celebrates it in a big way. On the night of Dec. 15, Grand Horizons held a Christmas Duo Show at the community center. This fantastic 90 minute holiday variety show featured Eddie Michael and Julia Langley and was hosted by Gary Wilcox. Approximately 100 people attended.

Eddie Michael started off the show singing Jimmy Buffett’s song “Margaritaville.” He continued on with several more hits including “Bad, Bad,

Le Roy Brown,” “Dream Lover” by Bobby Darin, “Venus” by Frankie Avalon, and several others. While performing these songs, he walked through the audience and sang to several people. There was dancing going on throughout the room while Eddie sang Elvis Presley’s “Blue Hawaii” and Bobby Darin’s “Mack the Knife.” Eddie also told us some cute stories and some jokes that really grabbed our attention. His laughter was quite infectious.

Eddie then called out Julia Langley and together they sang a clever rendition of “I Got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher. Julia sang some Christmas songs including “Let it Snow,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Jingle Bells,” ”Boogie Woogie Santa Claus,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” “Christmas Island” and more while strolling through the audience and dancing while on stage. Then she called out Eddie once again to sing hits from Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. When he sang “That’s Amore” the expressions on his face were

just so precious that you could actually visualize Dean Martin. “I Left my Heart in San Francisco” by Tony Bennett and “That’s Life” by Frank Sinatra were also superbly sung.

Julia came out once again to sing “Que Sera Sera,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and several more songs while drifting through the audience. She did a fabulous job of “Peppermint Twist” and “Rock Around the Clock” before calling out Eddie once again so the two of them could perform “Feliz Navidad.” This marked the end of the show and what a good show it was. Our sincere thanks go out to Gary Wilcox who hosted the show.

Lights And Trims Bring Special Joys At Hillcrest

As Christmas draws near many of the homes and golf carts here at Hillcrest have taken on special looks with loads of trims and lights of various kinds, giving a real festive look to the whole community. It has been fun taking evening walks and checking out all of the ways to add a bit of extra festiveness to an RV or park model home.

This last Wednesday capped all this fun with a special golf cart parade, followed by a gathering at the clubhouse to enjoy home baked goodies along with hot chocolate and coffee. At that time our Hillcrest Association Coordinator, Mary Lou Murray, announced the winner of the best decorated home and the judges of the golf cart parade, Ron and Linda Dunne, announced the winners of that event.

Everyone who has gone out of there way to add a bit of decoration to their winter home is a winner because of how much their efforts added to the beauty of the community, but special honors go to Dino and Renee Picchioni who won the prize for the best decorated home at Hillcrest. Taking second and third place were Les and Carolyn Boehmer and Russell and Sandy Beeman.

The first-place award for the best decorated golf cart went to Les and Carolyn Boehmer, followed by Rob and Cindy Fugaccia and Dan and Jan Moulaison. A special runner up award was announced for Ellen Finn who decorated her bike and managed to ride all the way around the park keeping up with the carts as they traveled every one of the roads showing off their decorations.

Christmas On Parade

Morningside RV Estates held their annual Christmas golf cart parade and sing-a-long on Dec. 8. This year brought many golf cart entries and a large number of residents attending the Christmas program.

Our first place golf cart winner was the shuffle board entry of the Christmas tree. Lynne and Dave Swinson led the parade again this year, which consisted of whimsical entries, realistic entries and even

Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The Nutcracker (Marilyn Johnson) was seen at many different sites throughout the parade. Santa didn’t have reindeer this year but a rocket that was entered by Jan and Tom Reynolds. The Grinch (Connie Baker) was also seen in the parade, and Ruby McClenathen was attired in the Christmas spirit this year.

Thank you to all who participated in the parade and the making of the cookies. Special thanks to Ed Hillard for creating a special sing-a-long program.

Elks Lodge Helping Our Veterans For The HolidaysIt’s been a busy year for the Elks Lodge.

With open arms our 14th Veteran received his new home furnishings from the veterans committee and Zephyrhills Elks Lodge #2731. Jeff Couchman had a smile from ear to ear as we delivered his sofa, chair, ottoman, 32” flat screen television, coffee maker, toaster, electric can opener, personal hygiene items, dining room table

and chair, placemats, socks, four piece dish set, flatware, crock pot, bath towels, wash cloths, kitchen towels and dish rags.

Our 15th veteran, Tom Hudson was in shock when the Elk members from Lodge #2731 showed up at his door to help furnish his home. Tom received all he needs to get started in his new place from a coffee pot and coffee to a recliner that he fell asleep in

the first night, crock pot, kitchen utensils, and storage containers. With the help from Lodge members Tom Pete, Dave Crotty and Ken Fabiani, Past Exalted Ruler and Chairperson for the Veterans Committee. The Elks Lodge #2731 has made it our mission for our major projects: Our Veterans of Zephyrhills, Tampa & St Petersburg area, and our children of Zephyrhills.

On Oct. 26 the Zephyrhills Elks Lodge #2731 and the veterans committee were able to donate cookies to, Rose Castle Nursing Home, Westbrook Manor Nursing Home, and the Zephyrhills Fire Department. We delivered two types of cookies and microwave popcorn: eight large banana boxes of cookies and two large banana boxes of popcorn, totaling in value over $750. The elks support our veterans and all those who are there to protect us, either in another country or here at home. Thank you for your service; the Elks will always be there to support you.

On Nov. 3, Jessie Page is the 16th veteran whose home the Zephyrhills Elks of Lodge #2731 was able to furnish. The lodge provided Jessie with a bed, night stand, a lamp, love seat, chair table and lamps, dishes, flatware, microwave oven, pots and pans, kitchen utensils, entertainment center, television, shower rod and curtains, sheet, blankets, bath towels, clothes, kitchen towels, coffee pot with coffee, and pillows. With the help from our Elks Lodge Tom Pete, Steve Czerneski, Ken Fabiani, Past Exalted Ruler & Veterans Chairperson, and all our members and friends for their donation. Making it possible for the Elks to continue to help and support our Veterans near and far from home. Thank you.

Raymond McDilda was the 17th veteran that the Zephyrhills Elks Lodge #2731 was able to help in Tampa. Ray was so surprised with all the furnishings that we had for him, from a love seat, chairs, pots ‘n pans, dishes, cups, glasses, flatware, microwave, shower rod with curtain, and cooking utensils. In addition, we provided end tables, lamps, nightstands, clock, linens and towels. We gave Ray everything except a bed to sleep in; we promised Ray as soon as a bed becomes available, we’d deliver it to him. On route from leaving Ray’s new home I received a phone call with a donation of a bed (Devine intervention)! Ray’s next call the same day was about my return to his new home with bed, frame, pillow and sheets. With a huge smile, Ray thanked Ken, as well as all the Elk Members for everything for his home

The Elks Lodge #2731 of Zephyrhills normally gets an early start on delivering furniture to our veterans. Mike Hanley, our 18th veteran, was wide-awake after his time on the bus at 5:30 a.m. to arrive at his new home here in Zephyrhills. Mike could not believe all the furnishings that Dave Crotty (Elk Member) and Ken Fabiani, Past Exalted Ruler & Veterans Chairperson. Mike was so thankful for the coffee and the coffee maker, as well as the pots, pans, crock pot, utensils, bowls, dishes, pillow, sheets and blankets, personal hygiene items, Tupperware, shower rod, curtains and hooks, lamps, end table, the list goes on and on. Thanks to everyone for your support for helping our veterans.

Greg Dorset is the 19th veteran that the Zephyrhills Elks Lodge #2731 was able to assist back in May. Greg received clothes, towels, both kitchen & bath, pots, pans, microwave, dining room table with two chairs, two bar stools, sheets, blankets, dishes, silverware, lamps, two recliners, coffee maker and coffee. You would have to be there to see the smile and how much the veteran appreciates everything that the Elks provide. With the help of Tom Pete, lodge member and Mike Hanley, a veteran who moved to Zephyrhills this past week.

Bright and early on Nov. 19, Bob Lewis was our 20th veteran. With the help from Dave Crotty lodge member, Mike Hanely a veteran helping his brother veteran. Bob was so surprised when he saw the sofa, chair, dining room table with two chairs, pots, pans, dishes, towels, lamps, two end tables, coffee maker, shower curtain including hooks, kitchen utensils, pillows, blankets, shirts, pants, and a set of corning ware dishes. Bob had a smile from ear to ear, so thankful for what the elks have done for him. I couldn’t believe that this would bring out all the good in the community and with the Elks of Zephyrhills. With the snowbirds return more and more donations are rolling in.

David Clark was the 21st veteran to move into his new home. With the support from Zephyrhills Elks Lodge #2731, David’s new home was furnished with a sofa, recliner, two end tables, two lamps, full size bed, sheets and blanket, coffee maker, coffee, microwave, pots, pans, 32” LED flat screen, shower rod, shower hooks, shower curtain, laundry detergent, fabric softener, dining room table, two chairs, bath towels, kitchen towels dishes, silverware, and kitchen utensils.
