SAHASTA” - 34TH DISTRICT CONFERENCE

It has been a unique e x p e r i e n c e accompanying DG to GOVs. I always learn from the visits and in December during the visits, I could assess the magnanimity of the projects by clubs . It is indeed a huge effort and I am amazed with the stupendous work.

The Inner Wheel Dist. Conference was arranged very well and I congratulate Mrs.Renu Iyer, Chairperson Inner Wheel and her team for the excellent work. The ICGF on Community Service gave me an exposure on the community service projects and the environment was ably suited for the event.

The Japanese emperors day gave me an insight to the Japanese culture.

in your dist., and the dist. itself, have made some improvements to keep up with the changes in society. We often use traditional practices instead of best practices, and we need to examine all of our practices and procedures for efficiency and efficacy. The Spirit of Rotary will flourish if we keep our clubs and dists. vibrant and viable in today's world!

Rotary clubs operate differently around the world, but they have a common purpose of fellowship & service. We have achieved “unity without uniformity” through our network of clubs, and if all of us work to make our clubs Bigger, Better, & Bolder, then clearly the best days of Rotary are still ahead!

We are making the world a better place, and we can continue to do so by what Rotary clubs do best, which is Bui lding Communit ies–Bridging Continents.

Hanumantha-nagar was really good and saw the Rotarians in action.

In order to BRIDGE CONTINENTS, we had the Japanese Emperors Day which was a first step of Dist.3190 bridging with the eastern part of the world. Likewise the export awareness programme organised jointly with FIEO (Federation of Indian Export Organisation) is another effort to bridge continents through business contacts.

We are putting our best efforts to make the District Conference a grand success. We have got the best speakers addressing us on important and current topics and the venue is fantastic. I would request all of you to attend the conference and make it memorable.

R o t a r y C l u b s o f B a n g a l o r e C a n t o n m e n t , HighGrounds, Central and HealthCity actualized the District's initiative to celebrate the Emperor's Day of Japan. The celebration was a part of the District's initiative to foster closer ties between India and leading countries of the world, at a people-to-people level, in keeping with Rotary 's message of “Bui lding Communities, Bridging Continents”.

The Chief Guest at the event was His Excellency Mr Masayuki Tsuchikawa, Consul of Japan at the Japanese Consulate in Bangalore. The event was attended by nearly 200 people, including several members of the Japanese community living in Bangalore, as well as several prominent personalities from Bangalore's business and social circles.

A key highlight of the event was the launch of an Indo-Japanese community initiative

Emperor's Day of Japanentitled “LEADING LIGHT”, an eco-conscious Green project for installing LED lights in the Lingarajpuram school that RCBC has nurtured for more than 20 years.

The event started off with a fascinating rendering of 'Jana Gana Mana' by the

all-Japanese singer troupe called Royal Echo. They followed it up with their own Japanese National Anthem. Then came the m e m o r a b l e B h a r a t Natyam dance by Ms Tomoko Matsuda, a Japanese lady studying

Indian classical dance. This was followed by a presentation on RI Dist 3190 by DG M.N. Suresh.

Thereafter, His Excellency Mr Masayuki Tsuchikawa, Consul of Japan, made a wonderful presentation on Japanese tourism and culture, drawing apt comparisons between their Tempura foods (fried snacks) and our very own Bajjis a n d P a k o d a s ! Ts u c h i k a w a - s a n ' s c o m m i t m e n t t o a s s i m i l a t i n g Bangalorean culture was evident in his liberal use o f K a n n a d a w o r d s throughout his talk. (For the uninitiated, 'San' is a Japanese suffix commonly added to anyone's name , quite similar to our very own “ji”)

This was followed by a nice presentation on India-Japan business opportunities, put together by JETRO, the Japan Export Trade Organization.

Next followed a presentation by the Japanese Managing Director of 'Komatsu'. Then came a demo of the centuries-old Japanese martial-arts tradition, rendered by local youngsters. Then followed an interesting talk by Ms Miho Sakata Malhan, a Japanese lady living in Bangalore, who has been doing excellent community work with Bangalore's underprivileged through her NGO. The final item of the event was some melodious Japanese songs by the Royal Echo Group, led by Kuboki-san of JETRO.

And of course, before everyone said 'Sayonara' to one-another, there was a sumptuous Japanese dinner served at the Lalit Ashok's rooftop restaurant OKO.

District Conference Participants,

Judie and I are pleased to welcome you to the 2010-11

district conference for your respective part of the Rotary world. I attended my first district conference as an outbound Rotary scholar in 1960, and Judie and I probably have attended more

than 100 such conferences since that time. As a result, we are firm believers in the value of such annual meetings!

District conferences are a tradition in Rotary, and they continue to provide information and motivation for countless Rotarians and their guests every year. They are the leading opportunity for Rotary club members to learn about the size and scope of Rotary beyond their own clubs. Most club members become even better Rotarians when they attend their district conferences and learn more about the amazing service projects and the wonderful internationality of Rotary around the world.

We also wish to express our appreciation to the district governors and the district conference committees for their good work in planning and implementing the conference programs. We know from experience that district conferences require productive team work, and we appreciate the district leaders' efforts to combine Rotary information and inspiration along with fun, fellowship, and networking.

I have encouraged Rotarians this year to develop a culture of innovation in their Rotary clubs and districts, and I hope the clubs

Dear Rotary Leaders,

My wife Srimathi and I hope that all of you enjoyed Christmas and the new year celebrations.

The month of December saw Rotary in full action and indeed it was a busy month for me and Srimathi. Nevertheless we enjoyed it very much.

The ICGF “SPANDANA” on community service, an event managed by Rotary Tumkur East, was organised ably and meticulously. The ICGF had a record attendance and I could see every one of them thoroughly enjoying the proceedings, the excellent fellowship and a delicious lunch. My hearty congratulations to the organisers.

The polio zonal meet at Kolar was well organised. The national immunisation days are scheduled on January 23 & Feb. 27. Let us all participate in large numbers and make the event a grand success.

I completed in December, 18 Governors official visits and with this I have completed 70 GOVs.I wish to place on record, the hospitality and affection showered on me and my wife during all the GOVs. Our grateful thanks to all of you.

Dear DG Manandi andfellow Rotarians,

I truly look forward to my visit to Bangalore and to my attendance at the District 3190 Conference. It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the President's Representative to your conference and to meet all of you.

I know under the leadership of DG Manandi that you are progressing nicely so far this year in growing Rotary in your district both in terms of membership and in terms of support to those in need. I applaud you for your efforts to date and look forward to hearing from each of you first-hand about your efforts to make this a better world. I hope to learn more about your culture, your country and your service to those in need. I am sure I will learn how our Rotary experiences may differ. However, I am sure my experience will reaffirm for me the similarities in our core values of diversity, leadership, integrity, service & fellowship.

I look forward greatly to enjoying your tremendous hospitality and will see you in February. Between now and then I wish you a wonderful new year.
