Chair’s Report

This year was the second with Sacred Heart College operating as a single College on two campuses. Experience to date overwhelmingly supports this initiative which has allowed a smoother transition for the boys from the middle campus.

The College Council acts as in an advisory way providing advice and support to Steve Byrne as College Principal.

Council also continues to be supported by energetic Finance and Building Committees which in recent years have managed two significant capital projects – St Paul’s and the newly completed Brother Joseph McAteer Centre at the Main Oval precinct.

In its first year of operation, the redeveloped St. Paul’s has been a great success and underpins our strengths in Hospitality.

The new Brother Joseph McAteer Centre is now ready for the 2017 school year and for the first time in many years, the College has an indoor venue capable of seating the entire senior campus.

The middle campus has also enjoyed extensive capital works as part of its Master Plan. More redevelopment work will be carried out in coming years.

The Finance Committee also assists Council with another of its key responsibilities of financial oversight and advice.

Council continues to be pleased with the focus on academic excellence and notes that the 2016 cohort achieved 100% SACE completion. Overall they achieved record academic results.

Congratulations are also extended to the boarding staff for the support and encouragement they give our boarders. Our boarding houses make our College unique amongst other senior secondary schools in South Australia and they are an important part of the fabric of our culture.

III. YEAR 12 RESULTS, VET REPORT AND NAPLAN

I am delighted to report that our Year 12 students achieved excellent results, both in the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) and with their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Learning and achievement continues to be promoted as a top priority in the College. We are confident that our graduating students are well equipped as independent learners to take on the challenges that exist beyond Sacred Heart in the years ahead.

The Year 12 students of 2016 have performed at an exceptional level with 91 students (compared to 78 students last year) achieving an ATAR over 90 – which places them in the top 10% of students in the State and also situates them in the top 10% of the nation. 11 students (compared to 9 students last year) secured scores in excess of 99.0 which places them in the top 1% of the SACE group. This is truly outstanding!

Of the 308 students eligible for an ATAR, 29.5% achieved an ATAR over 90. In total, 148 of these students (48.1%) students secured an ATAR in excess of 80, which signifies a commendable level of achievement. The mix of students continues to be varied with a number of students studying part-time and/or studying at more than one year level, including a selection of Year 11 students studying one or more Year 12 20-credit subjects.

GOVERNOR OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA COMMENDATION

Joshua SMITH

I am pleased to announce that Joshua Smith has been chosen to receive one of the Governor of South Australia Commendations for 2016.

The Governor of South Australia Commendation acknowledges and celebrates overall excellence in the South Australian Certificate of Education. It recognizes excellent achievement in Year 12 subjects as well as success in developing the SACE capabilities of communication, learning, personal development, citizenship and work.

Each school in South Australia was invited to nominate only one student whom they considered would be a most worthy recipient of the award. We nominated Joshua as this student.

Out of more than 14,500 students who received the SACE in 2016, only a handful have been selected to receive this prestigious award from the Governor of South Australia.

Page 10: SACRED HEART COLLEGE - Amazon S3...SACRED HEART COLLEGE ANNUAL COUNCIL REPORT 2016 The attached Report encapsulates the main activities and events associated with the Sacred Heart

A high-level selection committee consisting of leaders from across the South Australian community, including the Governor of South Australia, carefully considered all nominations for this award. The selection committee has conveyed to Joshua their recognition of and high regard for his outstanding achievements. In addition, Joshua was personally congratulated by the Chief Executive of the SACE Board (Dr Neil McGoran) in a telephone conversation on the day of the results release.

Joshua will attend the SACE Merit Ceremony on 7 February, 2017 where the Governor will present the award to him on stage.

MERIT RECIPIENTS Sacred Heart College Senior provides a broad selection of subjects in Year 12. In 2016, 48 Tertiary Admissions Subjects (TAS) and 3 non-TAS subject were offered for study. This year 61 students achieved 91 A+ grades. Of these, 62 were A+ merits achieved by 45 students in 21 subjects.

FROM THE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING DEPARTMENT Sacred Heart College’s Vocational Education and Training Program (VET) has successfully contributed to the student’s completion of SACE and subsequent future pathways for nearly 20 years. The department facilitated and supported 98 students enrolled in various courses across Adelaide this year. Of those 98 students, 45% were either partly or fully funded by the South Australian Government’s Workready Scheme - Training Guarantee for School Students. Throughout the past two years, the department saw a vast growth in interest and demand for VET Programs from students specifically in Years 9 and 10. The successful introduction of the TradeLinx Program for the College’s Year 10 and 11 students and the TradeLinx9 Program for Sacred Heart Middle Campus saw enrolments into this Program increase by 65% from last year. Students were given the opportunity to travel to Rosewater Trade Training Centre, to gain basic skills and knowledge in the follow industries: Construction, Electrical, Metal Engineering and Hair and Beauty. Participating in the TradeLinx or TradeLinx9 Programs was favourable for 15 students whom wished to continue with their VET studies and have enrolled to complete a Certificate II in 2017. Alongside the recent addition of the TradeLinx Programs, we introduced a Certificate II in Community Services (Children) at City West Child Care Centre, and Partial Certificate III Carpentry at Rosewater Trade Training Centre. Most VET students participated in our Structured Work Placement Program, traditionally completed in April and July school holidays. This is a compulsory component of the student’s course, or required if they are a funded student. We sincerely thank the host supervisors who were gracious in accepting our students and assisted in building on their skills and knowledge. New guidelines were introduced this year which made the process more substantial and subsequently increased each stakeholder’s insight and should ultimately reduce overall liability. With the support of the College community, a formal acknowledgement for Year 12 graduating students was held in September. Parents and families were invited to witness and acknowledge each individual’s success in their chosen course. The VET Department wishes to congratulate each student on their determination to successfully complete (or partially complete) their certificate whilst proudly representing Sacred Heart College. Alongside the College’s Principal, Steve Byrne, Nigel Blake (Educational Manager of Tourism, Hospitality and Cookery at TAFE SA) and Gavin McLaughlan (Principal of Mt Carmel College) were invited to present the 2016 VET students with their graduating certificates. We also had great pleasure in presenting students, Joseph Cummins and Braydon Keech the Adam Zeuschner Award for 2016, presented by Adam’s Aunt, Chris Zeuschner. Both Joseph and Braydon successfully completed a Certificate II in Metal Engineering & Fabrication at Marcellin Technical College over a period of 18 months. Both being Boarders, they demonstrated humility whilst representing their school each week at Marcellin Technical College. Joseph and Braydon evidently were committed and very much involved in their personal progression and continuously contributed to the success of our department. The leadership and initiative displayed by both students was evident in their acceptance of this award. With special mention, Stephen Dawson (2015) was awarded the South Australian VET Training Award at The VET Training Awards night held at Adelaide Convention Centre early in the year. Stephen was then invited to Darwin to represent South Australia at the Australian Training Awards in November 2016. Although Stephen, unfortunately, did not come away with the top prize on this occasion, he is remarkably happy of the way he conducted himself throughout the interview process and we as a College are immensely proud of his achievements. As a VET student in 2014 and 2015, Stephen successfully completed a Certificate II in Sport & Recreation and Certificate III in Fitness, and is now studying online, a Bachelor of Business Sport Management at Deakin University. The prospects for 2017 are very exciting. Sacred Heart College in partnership with TAFE SA, are proud to deliver a Certificate II in Hospitality at St Paul’s Food and Technology Centre. Students will participate on a Monday afternoon, so it does not interfere with their studies. There is also the scope to offer short courses in the near future (ie Responsible Service of Alcohol and Barista). Tony Finamore’s time as VET Coordinator has concluded and Annemarie O’Grady has been appointed as Coordinator for the next two years. We thank our colleagues, key stakeholders of Registered Training Organisations, host supervisors, families and especially students for making 2016 a year to remember. The foundations to prosper in an evolving Vocational Education industry have been laid and we look forward to building on them in 2017. Tony Finamore & Anne Marie O’Grady VET Department

LITERACY STRATEGIES

• Embed “growth areas” into teaching and learning plans • More explicit teaching e.g. of spelling and grammar – use formalized programs • Employ Literacy expert to work with small teams eg LOLT’s – who then train own group • Adopt Quicksmart strategies (literacy ) into classroom practices • Align Staff PD to improving literacy skill development • Align teaching of content – scope and sequence e.g. teaching of different genres • Provide staff with accurate, individualized data for all students (school, NAPLAN, ACER) • Provide a template for staff to complete ensuring that individual needs are recorded and

identified for every student

NUMERACY STRATEGIES

• Focus on explicitly teaching and assessing essential skills • Unpacking each achievement standard to ensure we are teaching to that standard and

identifying the key skills the boys should be picking up and providing examples of each type of question on teaching plans

• Focus on worded questions including explicitly unpacking the questions • Exposing boys to all three content strands areas of the curriculum prior to NAPLAN –

spending the “right” amount of time within each content/sub content areas • Developing an essential skills test for each year level • Whole school planning of the Maths curriculum

Sacred Heart Old Collegians Association President and Sporting Body Reports (SHOCS) 2016

President’s Report The Sacred Heart Collegians Association (SHOC) has been in existence since 1907 and with over 15,800 members, it seems we are going as strong as ever. The aim of the SHOC Association is to encourage friendship and the community spirit among the ex-students and one of the most effective avenues for this is through participation in the various sporting clubs. There has been outstanding participation across the board from the sporting bodies this year with two premiership flags taken home by the B grade football and C grade netballers. All sporting teams had successful years with strong numbers and strong participation on and off the fields. The netball club had 6 teams this year, the most since the club’s inception and the girls’ soccer had fielded a team again this year with the potential for a second team next year. The large number of participants and the extensive support network for these clubs are demonstrative of how strong the SHOC Association currently is. This year the Association assisted with the organisation of reunions and successful 10, 20, 25 and 30 year reunions were held, along with a reunion for the class of 1979. Other major social events for the year were the SHOC Ball organised by the Football and Netball Club at the Gallery on Waymouth Street in May and the SHOC Business Lunch at the Highway at the end of July. Both functions had over 100 people in attendance and were highly successful in fundraising for the Ball and networking for the Lunch. Both events will be held again next year so make sure to come along and catch up with some old friends. Since 1996 the SHOC Association has awarded a bursary(s) to a year 11 student (s) heading into Year 12 to assist with their school fees and some money towards their extra-curricular activities. These scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated not only a good academic level but also have made a contribution to the school community, and hopefully will continue to do so after graduation. The decision was once again made difficult by the high quality of the applications and the recipients will be announced at the Year 11 End of Year Assembly. Thanks to the selection panel of Alex Craig, Daniel Head and Michael Cannavan for their time and work in making the difficult decision. This year also saw the further development of the website and introduction of an e-Newsletter designed to come out more regularly than the Blue & Blue to keep the community up-to-date with activities of the Association and the school. Check out the website and sign up for the newsletter at www.shc.sa.edu.au. Thanks to the SHOC Association committee again for their work and commitment this year – in particular Stephen Juniper and Jane Mason who have been responsible for some of the new developments and have worked hard in the implementation of the website, reunions and newsletters. The Old Collegians Association also awards the Brother Jordan Redden Bursary and Marcellin Spirit Bursary to Year 9 students at the Sacred Heart College Middle School. As always there are too few that do the work so we are always open to anyone who would like to join the committee or even volunteer to help out at certain events, just get in touch. Regards Michaela Kenneally President

Football Club It was another successful year for the football club with the Division 2 Reserves team winning the grand final against St Ignatius. Under 18 The Under 18 team had a great year, but unfortunately lost the semi-final in a nail biter, four point defeat by PHOS Camden. Division C1 Team Well done to the C1 Team who finished 6th on the ladder with six wins and ten losses for the season. Division 2 Team Congratulations to the Division 2 Team who made it through to the semi-finals but unfortunately were beaten by St Peters Old Collegians in the preliminary final. The Football Club would like to thank and congratulate the coaches and committee on another great season. They would also like to acknowledge all the hard working and glamorous “MAGS” (Mums and Girlfriends) and dads who put in countless hours on BBQ and canteen duty throughout the year, your efforts don’t go unrecognised and are truly appreciated. Congratulations also to our SHOC Men SA Amateur Footballer 2016, Division 2 Team of Year and to the SHOC men who were named in the SA Amateur Footballer magazine's Division 2 Team of the Year. After outstanding seasons Mitch Parr, Lachy Button (VC) Nick Forster, Matt Crettenden, Taylor Angel and Mitch Bosley were all rewarded with selection. With six representatives, SHOC was clearly punching well above its weight and it was a fantastic result and great reward for an outstanding season, not just from the six lads but also the Club as a whole. Well done men! Scott Collins President

Netball Club Season 2016 has been an overwhelming success for SHOCNC with a number of new players and officials joining the club and the development of several new initiatives. In addition to this, four out of six teams were successful on the court and competed in finals in B2, B3, C2 and C3 grades, with C3 taking out our clubs fifth premiership. A total of 57 permanent players took part in the Adelaide Metropolitan Netball Division competition at the Netball SA stadium at Mile End. This season a record six teams were fielded in B2, B4, B6, C2, C3 and C4 grades. The B2 team was promoted at the beginning of the season from their initial nomination of B3. This team was competently self-managed with leadership from Captain, Kerry Fernandez and Vice Captains, Niamh Noonan and Ella Floreani, and finished fourth on the ladder. The B2’s missed some key players in their semi-final and went down to Swish, the eventual premiers. The B4 team showed impressive results early on causing them to be promoted to the B3 competition. The new B3 team was managed with leadership from Captain, Brigid Whiting and Vice Captains, Bridgette Comley and Nina Juniper. This team finished second on the minor round ladder with 14 wins, two draws and two losses. They fought through their Grand Final against a strong competition however, unfortunately narrowly missed out on a premiership against Western Jets.

Page 29: SACRED HEART COLLEGE - Amazon S3...SACRED HEART COLLEGE ANNUAL COUNCIL REPORT 2016 The attached Report encapsulates the main activities and events associated with the Sacred Heart

The B6 team, coached by Paul Angley, was also promoted to B5 grade after several significant wins early in the season. Their leadership group included Captain, Kellie Gardner and Vice Captains, Nicole Giannoni and Eyerus Curtis. They finished fifth on the ladder with an impressive percentage, however, were just short of a finals position by only two premiership points. The C2 team was also coached by Paul Angley. They were led by Captain, Gertie Taylor, and Vice Captains, Alex Craig and Jessica Ridgway. This team performed solidly through the season, winning 15 from 18 games and finishing second in the minor round. They made it through to the preliminary final round, however, a loss against Mercedes Old Scholars Association prevented them from contesting a premiership. The C3 team was coached by Georgia Bahr and led by Captain, Romy Smith and Vice Captain, Jess Underwood. This team dominated their competition and went undefeated through the entire season, finishing at the top of the ladder. The C3 absolutely dominated in their Grand Final, overcoming City Coasters with a score of 45-31. The C4 team was managed by player-coach Kathryn Annese and led by Captain, Esther Hurley. They were also assisted by C2 player Alex Craig. This team narrowly missed out on a finals position after finishing fifth by only two premiership points. Much like the B5 team, the C4 girls were also very competitive with their percentage. We thank all of our coaches and leaders for their dedication and commitment to the club. Milestones This season several players reached significant milestones in games played. These included Teigan Boxer, Ella Floreani and Brittany Prout who each reached 50 games. Sponsors We would like to thank and acknowledge our sponsors Badge Construction, Sabai Cafe, Physio Xtra, Tony Whennan, Mediterranean Cafe, Wish Hair and Body, the BMH and the Walkington family. Our sponsors support means we can continue to provide affordable opportunities in the community to participate in sport. Thank you also to our many sponsors who contributed to the Ladies Day raffle. We welcome new sponsors for Season 2017. Thank you to the SHOCNC Committee for their time and effort: -

• Shannon Visockis, President • Katie Fritz, Vice President • Natalie Bryant, Treasurer • Sarah Friend, Secretary • Bridgette Comley, Umpire Coordinator • Alex Craig, Social Committee • Brigid Whiting, Social Committee • Kate Duthy, Social Committee • Shauni Bow, Sponsorship and Fundraising Coordinator • Teigan Boxer, Equipment/Uniform Coordinator and Archivist • Kerry Fernandez, General Committee Member

Social A collaborative social committee consisting of SHOCNC and SHOCFC members have created a successful social calendar for us all in 2016. We have enjoyed events from a 90’s theme Season Launch, the ever classy SHOC Ball and our famous Ladies Day. SHC/SHOCNC Year 12 Scholarship This recent initiative continues with collaboration between SHCS and SHOCNC to award a scholarship to a Year 12 SHC netballer. This will provide them with fees and uniform paid for the winter season. The recipient of this scholarship embodies the SHC/SHOC values of team spirit and giving 110% at training and on game day.

Page 30: SACRED HEART COLLEGE - Amazon S3...SACRED HEART COLLEGE ANNUAL COUNCIL REPORT 2016 The attached Report encapsulates the main activities and events associated with the Sacred Heart

Our 2015/16 recipient, Zoe Martini, certainly fits the bill and has been a very welcome member of our club. We’d like to welcome and congratulate Olivia Wild. Olivia was presented with her award at the SHC Girls Sports Awards Dinner. We look forward to fostering relationships between our club and SHC to improve awareness and facilitate recruitment of students when they leave the College. Coaches Recruiting coaches is an ongoing challenge for our club. Several player/coach combinations within or across teams have worked in past seasons at SHOCNC. We are very grateful to those within the club who took on this extra responsibility. A huge thank you must also go to Paul Angley who coached not one, but two teams this year. Unfortunately, Paul became unwell through the season which limited his capacity to be on the ground with his teams. The success of both teams, despite this hardship, is a true testament to the foundation that Paul has built with these players. Thank you Paul for your guidance and commitment and we hope to see you fit and well next year. We welcome any interest from coaches in the SHC/SHOC community. Remuneration is available for coaching staff depending on experience and suitability. Summer netball season for 2016/2017 SHOCNC welcomes 18 Year 12’s from SHC who are joining us to play the summer season in the City Night Competition at Netball SA Mile End. The influx of new players from SHC has sparked great interest in summer netball and we will field four teams. The City Night competition is a more casual and social one which will hopefully be enjoyed by several SHOCNC teams over the ‘off season’ from winter. Thanks again to all committee members, coaches, umpires, players and sponsors associated with the club in 2016. We look forward to your continued involvement next year and hope for a 2017 filled with further success and growth. Alex Craig President

Soccer Club Season 2016 will be viewed as a successful one, despite not winning any silverware, due to the growth and development of the club. The women’s team, formed in 2015, continued to build their numbers and results got better over the course of the season. A fourth men’s team was entered into competition for the first time, with sound results over the year to finish 5th in the league. This year also saw the arrival of a number of new players, we had the highest number of registered players in our history and continue to build. The women’s team finished the season in 7th place in the league and progressed to the quarter finals of the cup. This was undoubtedly the highlight of the season as wins (and draws) were hard to find for a new team still finding their feet in a tough league competition. Thanks to coach Tom Walters for again giving up his time to train the team. Thanks also to player/organisers Maddy Forde and Sophie Gill for their efforts in taking over the organisation of the team and ensuring the team continues, and will surely increase in numbers over the next few years. Our A-Grade side plays in Division 1A and after a promising start to the season ended in 5th place in the league. The elusive CSL Cup, the only trophy not yet won by SHOC, continued to remain out of our grasp as the A’s were eliminated in the quarter finals. Nick Mitchell has been managing the club and coaching the A-Grade side since 2008 and the club again would not be in the position it is without him. We thank him for his many hours of work dedicated to improving the quality of the club and its’ players.

The B-Grade, playing in Division 1B, persevered throughout the season without much luck, ending in 8th place in the league and were eliminated in Round 1 of the cup. Regularly giving up a result by a single goal, the team, which featured many new faces, gelled over the season to play some great football to indicate they could be a team to watch in 2017. New to the role was coach Dan D’Elia, thanks go to him for all his time and effort over the year. Playing in Division 3 after winning the league and being promoted from Division 4 in 2015 was our C-Grade. Undefeated in 2015, coach Mark Allison wasn’t able to replicate these results. The season started with 6 defeats out of 7 games, this run of defeats ended with a nail-biting 5-4 victory away at the bottom side, Woodside, despite being 2-0 down with 5 minutes to play and an outfield player having to play goalkeeper. This victory led to a change in fortune with only 1 loss in the next 6 games, with the team finishing a comfortable 6th in the league. The C’s were eliminated in the 2nd round of the cup. The team transitioned in personnel and similar to the B’s played some great games without any reward in results. Some people say SHOC’s fourth male team was created simply to see if club legend Liam Mathews would come out of retirement for a third time and again grace the field. Although this would not be (entirely) correct, it was great to have Liam back coaching the D-Grade and see so many new (and returning) faces in the team. Although never challenging for the title, the team played some good games and had fun to finish the league in 5th position. Thanks to Liam for his time and efforts, and when he wasn’t available, to Adam Neill, another ‘out of (semi/self-imposed) retirement’ coach of the D’s. This year’s Simon Mathews Cup was again won by SHOC over the SHC 1st XI, in a close contest highlighted by the goalkeeping of the school team. SHOC have won the last 3 encounters after the inaugural game was won by the 1st XI, meaning that old scholar Jack Kent remains the only player to have won all 4 games. Can the school team finally end his run? Join us at the game in 2017 to find out. To Sacred Heart College, the staff who support us and allow the use of facilities, who give their time to work with us and to the students who participate in the Simon Mathews Cup and then become SHOC players, we say thank you and we look forward to working with you next year. We thank our sponsors, whose continued involvement with the club allows us to survive and grow. The Broadway has been our major sponsor and function venue for years, thanks to Mark and the team there. Total Tools continues to be a significant support to the club, a big thanks to Jezza and Ryan for everything you do for us. Tom and his company Landscape Creators are also thanked for their support again this year. New sponsors this year Paul and Caroline Kent from Kent Auto, thanks for your support and we hope we can continue to work with all our sponsors again in 2017. Mark Allison has been the backbone of the club for the last few years, as Vice-President, coach and administrator extraordinaire. Many hours throughout the week culminated on Friday nights with communications and other administrative tasks which, if not done, would mean the club could not function. Without all your time and effort, the season couldn’t have run as well as it did so from the entire SHOCSC community, a huge thanks for all that you do to benefit our club. Also, thanks to all the committee members; Mark, Mitch, Mob, Jake, Ryan, Camilla, Maddy, Dan, Skip, Paul and Tom, who’ve given up their time to help organise teams, functions and all those little jobs that add up to a big effort over the year, your help makes the club what it is; a great place to be active, meet people and spend some leisure time. As said earlier, we are always happy to have new players, so if you’re interested in some SHOC soccer in 2017 contact us at the email address above in the article. Pre pre-season will begin sometime in late December/early January with official pre-season beginning around the start of February. Email us so we can put you on our contact list and also join our Facebook group to keep updated with SHOCSC news. Michael Cannavan President

Cricket Club With our two teams both managing to make the finals series, the 2015/16 SHOC cricket season has been a massive success. Captained by Rav Prakash, the A Grade coasted through the minor rounds, managing eight victories and just one loss. SHOCs finished second on the A3 ladder. There were four five-wicket hauls from four different bowlers throughout the year, proving the depth we have. After forfeiting twice due to a lack of numbers, the B Grade still managed to make the finals thanks to an incredible winning streak post Christmas. We finished fourth on the B3 ladder with five wins. Captain, Matt Adamson led from the front throughout the entire season, making an incredible 549 runs, including two massive centuries. Additionally, SHOC Cricket Club also competed in the Twenty20 competition, held on Tuesday evenings where we managed to reach the semi-final. Unfortunately, Saint Peters Old Collegians were too good on the day and knocked us out of the competition. Nevertheless the boys competed hard, consequently making it a successful campaign. The club also had a brilliant season off field hosting fantastic social functions and we managed to take on some new sponsors too. New sponsors this year included: the Mediterranean Café, the Moseley Bar and Kitchen, Nelson Team wear. The Broadway Hotel and Badge Construction also continued their wonderful partnership with SHOCCC and the club extends their gratitude to all sponsors, old and new. 2016 farewelled Nathan Grasby as the Club’s President and welcomes Brendan Hall for the 2017 season. FOUNDATION OFFICE

Role of the Foundation The Foundation’s role is to provide financial support via donations from current and past parents, old scholars and friends of the school community to assist with the provision of facilities at the college. It also, in conjunction with the college, provides scholarships and bursaries, assists in the organization of reunions, archival requests, the production of publications, maintenance of the database and assists with the administrative needs of the Sacred Heart Old Collegians Association. Annual General Meeting At the Annual General Meeting of the Foundation Jim Whiting resigned from the role of President and handed over the reins to Rob McKay. We thank Jim Whiting for his generosity, incredible hard work, support and assistance over the years. Annual Giving Annual Giving took place in May/June 2016. The annual giving campaign was marketed to past donors and current parents at Sacred Heart College Senior, together with old scholars who have previously donated. As usual we had a generous response from our community. Bursaries The Foundation continues to offer a Bursary in the sum of $1,000 to a Sacred Heart College Senior Year 11 student. The recipient for 2016 was Cara McGlaughlin. This award was presented to Cara at the Year 10/11 Farewell Assembly. The award is aimed at encouraging and recognizing an “all round” student in Year 11. It does not recognize the champion in a particular subject, sport or service activity, but rather someone who participates in a wide range of activities and achieves excellent results. The Foundation also presented a Bursary to a Year 9 student at the Middle School Campus. This bursary was awarded to Liam Chapman. An amount of $2,000 will be deducted from Liam’s school fees for 2017. They also provide a Bursary to a Year 9 student for the Christian Service Award which is in recognition of Sister Marie Ralph. This year the Bursary was awarded to Tom Schar. An amount of $500 will be deduced from Tom’s school fees for 2017. The Whiting family, in memory of their late sons and brothers, Henry Whiting and Richard Whiting, established the Henry Whiting Bursary in 2002. Three scholarships are awarded annually to boarders. The Bursaries are open to all Year 10 boarders, but preference will be given to those families who find boarding fees a considerable burden. The applicants must demonstrate a willingness to apply themselves to study and work to the best of their ability. It is an expectation that the recipient(s) will be involved in school activities and have a commitment to their community both at home and at the College. The Scholarships for 2016 were awarded to Year 10 students Remee Agars of Cleve and Zac Driver from Keith. Blue and Blue There were two issues of the Blue and Blue this year. The final issue of the year was 60 pages and continues to be well received by the whole Sacred Heart community. Reunions The Foundation is ongoing in providing assistance to reunion organizers. This year the Foundation and Old Collegians Association assisted with the organisation of reunions for 10, 20, 25 and 30 year reunions. A reunion was also held for the Class of 1979.

Archives/Memorabilia The Archives is a treasured part of the history of Sacred Heart College. This material is currently located in the Cottage. The archival material needs to be catalogued in more detail and it is hoped this process will begin next year. Sacred Heart Old Scholars Association Michaela Kenneally continued in her role as President of the Old Scholars Association. The Foundation continues to provide administrative assistance to the Old Scholars Association, primarily to keep the database updated which is also crucial for the Foundation to be able to maintain contact with past scholars in terms of attending functions, annual giving etc. The Old Collegians website and newsletter (4 x yearly) continues to be well received by the old scholars. Relocation of Uniform Shop This year the Foundation purchased a property on Oaklands Road. This property will be used by the Sacred Heart College Uniform Shop. Scoreboard for Main Oval Before the end of the year the Foundation will be writing a cheque to the College for $100,000 towards the scoreboard for the Main Oval. The Foundation continues to be active and successful in the raising of funds, organization of events, communicating with the community and the continuing update of the database. It exists with the great support of Principal, Steve Byrne, Operations Manager, Peter McCabe and all other staff. The Communications Strategy which was undertaken with the assistance of old scholar Stephen Juniper is nearing completion. Thank you also to Jane Mason for running the Foundation office through another successful year. With your assistance we look forward to a busy and productive 2017. Rob McKay Foundation President

BUILDING COMMITTEE

2016 was again a significant year for the building committee with many projects commenced at both the Middle School and Senior School sites. The major project under construction was the redevelopment of the Main Oval complex at the Senior School. This project commence in April with the demolition of the existing buildings. To facilitate this project the Health and PE faculty were relocated to temporary facilities in the Boarding House and in addition Grounds and Maintenance were also relocated to various temporary locations. Works also commenced in May on a new Grounds Shed Facility on the South Eastern corner of the Brighton Road Oval to provide a permanent home for the grounds staff from December onwards.

We were also fortunate to be able to have access to new premises at 43 Oaklands Road. The building was purchased by the Foundation and leased back by the College. It has been used as storage during the construction phase and will become the permanent home for the uniform shop from Jan 2017. I take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the Foundation yet again for their support of the College.

At the Middle School the new cricket practice nets were completed during term 1 and work also commenced on the car park and drop off area at the Walter Avenue entrance to allow a safer traffic flow for all concerned and was completed in September

As reported last year the St Pauls Hospitality and Technology Centre opened on day 1 term 1 and has been acclaimed by all who are using it. In addition after negotiations with the Holdfast Bay Council an EMU crossing on Whyte Street was commissioned and has provided a much needed safe travel for student to and from the main campus to St Pauls.

As first proposed in 2014 the College in conjunction with the Foundation has undertaken a commitment to refurbish the science laboratories. The first of these fit outs was completed during term 1 and as expected has provided great outcomes for teaching and learning in the science faculty. A second is proposed for mid-year 2017.

Sincere thanks go to the members of the committee, Steve Byrne (Principal), Jim Whiting (Chair), David McKay (member) and Mark Sires (member). I personally express my thanks to the committee for the expert advice they provide to myself and the College as a whole on an ongoing basis.

PARENTS AND FRIENDS REPORT The Parents and Friends group at Sacred Heart is a dedicated and enthusiastic group of people who work with the Principal and staff to organize social events and support parental involvement. Any funds raised at these events are used to benefit students. This year Louise Williams continued on in the role of Chairperson with the assistance of Jane Mason as co-chair and secretary. Beryl Rowe remained as Treasurer. The Wine and Cheese / Welcome Evening was the first event held early in the year to welcome new parents to our school and for friends to become reacquainted. This was held in the Debourg Performing Arts Centre for the first time and it was a great success. In May a movie night was held as a fun and social evening. This was also quite successful financially. Intercol was hosted by the College in August and once again the P&F committee assisted with the afternoon tea. The afternoon was a great success, despite the challenges of not having the main oval and conference centre available. In October we held a farewell night for parents of Year 12 students which was another great success. The night is held to give parents an opportunity to farewell friends in a friendly and sociable environment. In 2016 the P&F introduced a Pastoral Care Committee. The members were Louise Williams, Jane Mason, Ingrid McKay, Lisa Chapman and Mel Whitchurch. A charter was prepared and the committee liaised with the school counsellor in terms of students in need. A couple of students were given assistance over the year and it proved very successful. The Pastoral Care Committee will continue on in 2017 with the assistance of the school counsellor, Lindy Leahy. The P&F are continuing to promote the involvement of parents from the Middle School campus and are hopeful the Middle School will have more involvement in 2017 as a representative has been elected to liaise and communicate specifically with them. The committee wish to thank Gail Morgan for her attendance and enthusiasm as staff representative. Gail has brought some wonderful insights into what is happening at Sacred Heart. Farewells are extended to Louise Williams, Jane Mason, Beryl Rowe, Mel Whitchurch and Rosetta Hamood as outgoing committee members. It has been a pleasure to work with them and we thank them for all the help and support they have given the P&F and the Sacred Heart community over a number of years. P & F Committee
