Pastor’s Corner ~

Welcome: to greet (someone) in a warm and friendly manner (Merriam Webster online dictionary).

Of course, I didn’t have to quote the Merriam-Webster dictionary because it is abundantly clear that the people

of Sacred Heart Parish not only know the meaning of the word, but live and practice it as well. I am most

grateful for the smiles, handshakes, and wishes of good luck and blessings I received my first weekend as pastor

of Sacred Heart Parish.

When I am on vacation I always like to attend Mass at a local parish “in cognito,” that is, as a member of the

congregation in street clothes and not dressed as a priest nor participating as a concelebrating priest. It can be an

eye-opener. First, it helps me to see how a priest can be perceived by the congregation without realizing it. It

has helped me to think more carefully about some of the words and actions I might use as a priest during Mass.

Secondly, it helps me get a sense of the parish community, particularly how welcoming it is. It shows at the

beginning of Mass if there is a moment of greeting (like we have here at Sacred Heart Parish). It shows itself

especially at the Sign of Peace. Sadly, I have attended Mass at some parishes in which no one extended a

handshake to me at the Sign of Peace, despite my turning in all directions to offer a handshake. A final test of a

welcoming parish is the end of Mass when we might have one last opportunity to just say “hello” to a new face

sitting next to us.

I will tell you a little secret: I have been told that there is another priest who occasionally attends Mass at

Sacred Heart “in cognito.” I haven’t spoken directly to him, but I am confident that the fact he keeps

returning means that you are extending the same welcoming spirit to others as you have shown to me! May we

always remember that when we welcome a stranger, we also welcome Christ.

In Christ,

Fr. Bill Lange

P.S. I would like to express a heart-felt “Thank you” to all those who have helped with the Pastor Installation

Mass – our parish staff, our musicians, servers, ushers, lectors, extraordinary ministers, the Pastoral Council,

The Finance Committee, the Stewardship Committee, and the caterer, Brian Leach. Their generosity with their

time, talent, and treasure has been outstanding and is greatly appreciated. Again, here is an example of an

amazing welcoming spirit shining through!

Stewardship Corner ~

The Gospel from Matthew, in which Jesus relates the Parable of the Sower, might be summarized quite simply, “Judge not lest you be judged.” Jesus makes it clear that when the tares (weeds) are discovered among the wheat, it is not our job to either decide what are weeds or to separate them from the good wheat, the fruits. That will be done by the Lord at harvest time, on Judgment Day. As stewards, sometimes we become too involved with what those around us are doing. Instead, we must present ourselves as good soil and as good “wheat” focusing on our own growth to the aid of others. God will take care of the rest.

One of the shortest of Jesus’ parables is included in today’s Gospel as well — the Parable of the Mustard Seed. This is significant to each of us. Although we, like the mustard seed, may seem small and insignificant, through our stewardship efforts, combined with those around us making similar efforts, the Kingdom of God can grow to an unimaginable size right here in front of us.

Sacred Heart Parish was founded June 3, 1915. Our parish has been helping Catholics live out their faith life in the Oxford area for 100 years, a fact which we hope to celebrate in 2015. If you would like to join our Centennial Committee to help plan activities surrounding the celebration of our first century, please contact the parish office ([email protected]).

Sacred Heart School

Many Families, One Heart

Are you considering Sacred Heart School for your family?

Our Kindergarten program offers the following curriculum:

Religion

Our Kindergarten program compliments you, the primary religious

educators of your child. We learn through daily prayers and stories

from the Bible. The children will enjoy a variety of activities that integrate

Scripture, the liturgical calendar and doctrine. Eighth graders serve as

prayer buddies to help guide our kindergartners through the year.

English/Language Arts

Children will be recognizing all letters, upper and lower case. As awareness

grows, the letter sounds, rhyming and knowing words become more familiar,

and the reading begins! We include handwriting, phonics, grammar and

journaling as well.

Technology

We incorporate the fun of learning with activities using the “Smart Board” and iPad.

Science and Social Studies

Our education is enhanced by the use of United Streaming,

science kits from CCIU and Scholastic News. There are

various field trips and science programs throughout the year.

All of these experiences help the children to understand the

things around them and our community.

Math

With the Common Core State Standards, there are many opportunities for graphing, problem solving, using

probability and comparing data. Manipulatives are used for much of our hands on work. The children also learn

uses of numbers, addition/subtraction, greater than/less than, numeral words, and sets.

Art, music, library, and physical education are also included as part of the child’s weekly specials.

To schedule a tour, please contact the school at

[email protected] or 610-932-3633
