I ask you to support the Catholic Appeal for 2019. I realize that some of us are very angry, and all of us are upset, about the scandal in our church’s leadership in our nation and across the world. I share your anger; however, I support Cardinal Sean in his efforts make our diocese a place that safe for all our people. Over the past fifteen years he has offered us the leadership that is necessary to rebuild trust among us. This yearly appeal for funding diocesan wide pro-grams directly aids Sacred Heart parish in Roslindale.

• These monies provide formation and resources for deacon services in our parish communities. Mr. Anto-nio Perez of our parish is training now to be ordained a deacon.

• In honor of our 125th parish anniversary, we are using the diocesan program for building and construction as we plan to provide elevator access to our upper church and to improve our bathroom facilities in the lower church.

• Our parish school has been just designated a HEA-LEY Foundation school for the next 3 years. This is an investment of over $100,000.00 in our school’s growth and development. This is possible only with the assistance and encouragement of our Catholic Schools office.

These ministries enrich our parish life, educate future generations, strengthen families and advance our Church’s mission. And we are called together in this Our church is facing challenging times to be sure. But times of crisis test our resolve and the current challeng-es we face are no different. The fact remains that the Cath-olic Appeal provides more than half of the funding for these important ministries. Without your support of the Appeal our parishes, schools and those in need will suffer. The need for these important ministries continues.

Next weekend March 2nd and 3rd will be our

Catholic Appeal Commitment Weekend here at Sacred

Heart parish. Your donations will help to sustain the 51

ministries that support us…and support our Church. The

generosity of those who have come before us planted the

seeds of these ministries. It is now our turn to help sus-

tain and nourish their future growth.

Even though many of you may have already re-

sponded to Cardinal Sean’s letter, next weekend all of us,

as a parish will be asked to make a commitment to the

2019 Catholic Appeal. Please take-home today’s bulle-

tin. There you will 0ind more information about the im-

portant work funded by the Appeal and the impact it

makes in our lives.

I ask you to support the Catholic Appeal, as I do,

because the Catholic Appeal supports us. This is our

Church and every gift makes a meaningful difference.

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus’ words today make it very clear how we are to live as his followers. “Love your ene-mies”…”do good to those who curse you”…”pray for those who mistreat you”…”give to everyone who asks of you (and) don’t demand it back”… “Stop judging”…”Forgive and you will be forgiven.” Jesus doesn’t lighten our responsibility, rather, he restates his teaching emphasizing that the extent to which we are willing to follow/live his words is what will be returned to us. As Christ to help you this week to put his words into action in your life. Notice the differ-ence it makes in your relationships.

Today’s Liturgy

People tend to criticize or give advice to others before examining their own lives. God doesn’t condemn us for our failures so why should we find the need to do that to others? In this parable, Jesus wants us to judge ourselves first and recognize our own faults before we find faults in others.

In today’s world, people tend to criticize polit-ical leaders and focus on the negative influences around us. Instead, we should look for positive influ-ences. We should look inside ourselves and determine what is bothering us. Maybe we are blinded by the unacceptable things that are happening and not seek-ing the opportunity to discover the positive acts that God has encouraged people to do. People are very quick to judge one another for faults and failures. God doesn’t do that to us. Instead, God sees the good in us.

This scripture reading is telling us not to criti-cize and judge others for we are not above being criti-cized and judged. As scripture states, “let me remove that splinter in your brother’s eye, when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye.” We need to investigate our own flaws in life and not spend time judging others. We don’t need a world of hypocrites. We need to pray that we will be able to see God’s positive works and blessings in the world around us. We don’t want a world of judgement and hate but a world of acceptance and love.

Sacred Heart School: A STREAM Innovator What is STREAM? STREAM is an integrated curriculum encom-passing Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics. Scholars at Sacred Heart, from Pre-School to 8th Grade, incorporate skills from each of these areas in their work. In the spring, the school showcases this effort in an all-school STREAM night, where each grade presents collaborative projects that represent their studies and bring together level-appropriate examples of the various disciplines. The STREAM curriculum focuses on critical thinking, a resilient learning through failure and success, and collaboration—all skills for a 21st century citizen. Come by and see what STREAM learning does for our young scholars!

MISSION STATEMENT Rooted in the universal call to discipleship, the mission of Sacred Heart and St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Roslindale and Forest Hills is to preach Jesus Christ. Proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ takes many forms: preaching, wor-

ship, education, service, works of mercy, and evangelization. The staff and the congregation are guided by the overall mission to proclaim the victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death in this time and place.
