In the Catholic Church, devotion to the Sacred Heart referes to the heart of Jesus of Nazaret as a symbol of divine love.. This devotion had its origin in a mystical current centered on the person
of Jesus Christ, which conceives of the heart as the vital center y expresion of His surrender and total love. In this sense, the devotion to the Sacred Heart refers especially
to the sentiments of Jesus and his love for humanity.
Many saints were devoted to the Sacred Heart of JesUs: St Buenaventura,
St Alberto Magno, St Gertrudis,
St Catalina de Siena, blessed Henry Suso,
St Peter Canisius St Francis of Sales.

HISTORY OF THE DEVOTION TO THE SACRED HEART
"Religious worship is not paid to images, considered in themselves, as things; but according as they are representations leading to
God Incarnate. The approach which is made to the image as such does not stop there, but continues towards that which is
represented. Hence, because a religious honor is paid to the images of Christ, it does not therefore mean that there are

Although there have been many devoted to the Sacred Heart the modern day devotion is due to St Margarite M A of the order of the Visitation to whom Our Lord appeared in 1673. In these apparitions, Jesus said to her that whoever preayed to the Sacred Heart, would receive many graces.“Behold this my heart, despite consuming itself in ardent love for men, doesn’t receive from christians more than sacrilegious scorn, indifference and ingratitude even in the very sacrament of my love. The worst that wounds my Heart is the insults I receive from persons consecrated to my service”.
Fr. Matthew Crawley Boevey SSCC promoted a movement of renewal of
the familes and society through a moral cruzade, and founded the Work of Enthroning of the Sacred Heart in
the homes.
A In mid XX century the Italian Capuchine St Pio of Petrelcina and Blessed Leon Dehon
promoted and renewed the idea of prayer directed to the Sacred Heart.
in his papal encyclical Auctorem Fidei, Pius VI
mentioned the devotion to the Sacred Heart.
In the letters of Blessed Mary of the Divine Heart (1863-
1899) she made the petition in the namv of Christ, to Pope Leon XIII to consecrate the whole world to the Sacred
Heart of Jesus. In his encyclical Annum Sacrum (25 may 1899 ) Pope
Leon said that the entire humanity should be
consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and he made this consecration on the 11
june 1899.
Pius XII promoted in his encyclical Haurietis Aquas the devotion to the Sacred Heart “Jesus, during his live, passion and agony has known and loved each and every one
of us and he gave himself up for us.” The Son of God loved me and surrendered himself for me” Gal 2,20. He has loved us all with a human heart. Therefore the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pierced
for our sins and our salvation (cf. Jn 19, 34), “is considered as the principle indicator and symbol… of the love the Divine Redeemer has continually for the eternal Father and for all men” (Pio XII, Enc."Haurietis aquas": DS 3924; cf. DS 3812).4
This devotion invites those who practise it to have in the words of Paul of Tarso “the same
sentiments as Jesus Christ” Phil 2,5
is it remarkable that love, which is the supreme law of the Christian religion, the surest foundation of true and perfect justice and the
chief source of peace and innocent pleasures, loses its warmth in the souls of many? For as our Savior
warned us: "Because iniquity hath abounded, the charity of many shall grow cold.“ ( Is 32, 17.)
Since then, alas, one can see that the number of those whose
boast is that they are God's enemies is in some places
increasing, that the false slogans of materialism are being spread
by act and argument, and unbridled license for unlawful desires is everywhere being
praised

Spain and Latin
America
This is an example of the Spanish coat of arms in which
Carlos VII, claimant to the
throne incorporated the Sacred
Heart
One of the most spectacular celebrations or the Sacred Heart in Spain is in the town of Alhaurín in Malaga, where the brotherhood of “our Father Jesus Nazarene” make
many processions on Saturday and Sunday after Corpus Christi
King Alphonsus XIII consecrated
Spain to the Sacred Heart in Getafe, in Cerro de los Angeles,
the geographical centre or the
Iberian Peninsula
During the Spanish Civil War, many soldiers of the nationalists carried Sacred Hearts cloth badges tied to their clothes. They called them “detentes” praying that they might “detain” the bullets of the enemy.
Ecuador was the first country in the world, officially consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate heart of Mary. The Governor ordered the building in Quito of a basilica of the
“National Vow” in honour of this consecration.
In Peru, the Church of St Peter of the
Jesuits is the national
Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of
JesusEach year during
June there are celebrations and finally procession
of the Sacred Heart, since 1878.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is the patron of the Navy of Chile and also of the train workers.
Colombia was consecrated
to the Sacred Heart 22 June 1902
in the “National
Vow Temple”.
MEXICOThe expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart
is in Leon Guanajuato. The Sacred Heart is also patron of the
cathedral of Ciudad Victoria in Tamaulipas
The Jesuits helped spread the devotion to the Sacred Heart in America and the Phillipines
In Africa
The true devotion to the Sacred Heart
requires making an effort to know Him in prayer and
study, to imitate his
virtues, especially humility, and
identify fully with Him in thoughts, in order to think like Him and not like the world
in sentiments, loves and behaviour.
1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life.
2. I will give peace in their families.3. I will console them in all their
troubles.4. I will be their refuge in life and especially
in death.5. I will abundantly bless all their
undertakings.6. Sinners shall find in my Heart the
source and infinite ocean of mercy.7. Tepid souls shall become fervent.8. Fervent souls shall rise speedily to
great perfection.9. I will bless those places wherein the
image of My Sacred Heart shall be exposed and venerated.
10. I will give to priests the power to touch the most hardened hearts.
11. Persons who propagate this devotion shall have their names eternally written in my Heart.
12. In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.

Another most precious gift of His Sacred Heart is, as We
have said, Mary the beloved Mother of God and the most
loving Mother of us all. She who gave birth to our
Savior according to the flesh and was associated with Him
in recalling the children of Eve to the life of divine grace has
deservedly been hailed as the spiritual Mother of
the whole human race. And so St. Augustine writes of her: "Clearly She is Mother of
the members of the Savior (which is what we are),
because She labored with Him in love that the faithful who
are members of the Head might be born in the Church."
