Precious containers for precious contents, be it for an engagement ring, a coin collection or your favoured swivel knife. The art of making leather boxes has been around for centuries. I had the chance to see originals from close, study them and learn a few tricks. Using ancient knowledge combined with new means of making I propose to lead you step by step into the architecture of building a 100% leather box without any stitching. We also discuss different options. Examples of 15th Century cases will be shown for close examination. After this class you will not only bring back home an original mini leather casket, but also the keys to a wide range of new project ideas based on the principles acquired during this class. Attention, basic skiving skills are required.

Furry and cute alpacas from an Arnhem shop were quite popular with ELWATS visitors in 2018! This year, you can make your own alpaca! Turn your talents loose on a piece of leather to create the fuzziest creature on your wall! Carving, tooling, hairing, texturing, embossing, coloring and more! You’ll be taking home your own 3-D alpaca, ready to frame. (Approximate size: 8x10 inches / 20x25 cm)

€165Student Limit 12Intermediate to AdvancedWhile there is a lot of reference material on how to learn the basics of floral tooling, there is very little designed to help take it to the next level. Bobby designed this workshop to do just that! General topics covered are: leather selection, casing the leather, carving solutions, controlling stretch and swivel knife/stamping tool selection. He will talk about a variety of the techniques that he utilizes on his own projects. This is where he will share the techniques he has learned over the years to create depth, dimension, texture and highlights to the tooling. And with the aid of close-up cameras and a large screen Smartboard, each student will have the opportunity to observe these techniques first hand. Instruction will also include: the cutting sequence, tooling sequences, beveling without cutting, petal lifting and undercutting, back-beveling and the use of modeling tools. The class will have an opportunity in the afternoon session to apply these techniques on a practice floral tooling pattern. As this is not a project class, there will be no emphasis or pressure to complete the practice patterns. There are so many products available to the leather worker that it is difficult to know what to use or when to use it. Bobby designed this three hour demonstration to address the use of a variety of those products. General topics will include the use of spirit and water based dyes, acrylic colors, liquid highlighters and paste antiques. Through the use of close-up cameras and a large screen Smartboard, he will share the techniques and sequences that he uses to produce professional looking finishes. Discussion will include: oiling, brush selection, dyeing tooled backgrounds, dyeing edges, applying acrylic colors, applying paste antique, finish coats and sealants. Throughout the demonstration he will address a variety of products from various manufacturers, alternative applications and the successful methods that he has learned to use over the years. When it comes to carving, the swivel knife is the most important tool we employ and undoubtedly the most difficult to master. Its use is the foundation for all styles and types of leather carving. With that in mind, Bobby is presenting a workshop dedicated completely to the attributes of the swivel knife and the techniques that I employ with it. The instruction will cover the pros and cons of a variety of swivel knives. Topics covered will include: specialty knives, proper hand fit, proper grip, blade types and selection, knife manufacturers and most importantly, blade sharpening and stropping. With the aid of close-up cameras live streaming to a large screen Smartboard, Bobby will demonstrate the techniques that he uses when cutting tooling patterns, performing finish cuts and when ‘free-handing” decorative finger carvings. Additionally, the discussion will cover: line priority, cutting sequences, tapered cuts, practice techniques, tracing patterns and leather preparation. Students will learn the fundamentals of making various cuts and have the opportunity to practice cutting one of his tooling patterns or a finger carving pattern. As this is not a project class, there will be no emphasis or pressure to complete a pattern. Crossed Horses in 3-DJürgen Volbach

Every detail of this workshop will be taught, starting with copying the horse heads onto the leather, modeling from the backside to the frontside, to bringing the embossing into the right form. After this, you will learn the right combination of leather dust and rubber gum/cement to fill the back side. Then you will use modeling tools to bring out the shape of the horses’ heads, add hair structure and learn the right way to undercut specific areas to give the horses a living “look”. From there, you can take the artwork home to add any color or antiquing that you wish, or just leave it natural.

This class will cover a variety of techniques such as carving, embossing, use of a modeling spoon and painting with acrylics – all combined in order to make a stunning piece of wearable art. The techniques learned in this class can be applied to multiple personal items such as : key fobs, brooches, buttons, decorative conchos, etc.

Hand Stitching TechniquesDanielle Roossien

Have you ever had the problem of being short a hand while stitching, or not knowing how to handle your needles? Then this will be a great workshop to improve your skills. The main focus of this workshop will be hand stitching techniques. Participants will learn the basics of hand stitching, such as how to prepare the leather with the required tools, and how to angle and handle an awl and needles. By making a so-called “technique-sheet” you will take home a self-made example sheet with various types of traditional, constructional and decorative stitching to apply in your own projects. Time permitting, the box stitch will also be covered. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels; even if you already hand stitch, you will have the chance to improve your skills by paying attention to detail and if you are a beginner, we will start with the basics.

Many projects involve different ways of braiding with various types of lace. This workshop is the right one if you want to learn how to make your own lace! The main focus of this workshop will be about lacemaking and braiding techniques. By making a “technique-sheet” we have time and can concentrate on technique only. Participants will learn the basics about lacemaking and preparing the lace for braiding as well as the braiding principles itself to apply to your own projects. We will be using our self-made lace on the “technique-sheet” to learn various edge and applique braids for constructional and decorative use. Also we learn about how to prepare the leather with an eye for detail and how to use the required tools. This class is suitable for all skill levels, and if you already braid, you will have the chance to improve your skills by paying attention to detail; if you are a beginner, we will start with the basics. (If you have any, you can bring some braiding work to review). This workshop is a great choice if you plan to take Isaac Romero’s workshops.

Leather Molding with SandPepe Pereira

Learn a very practical method to mold leather at home or in your workshop using sand from the beach or from a home improvement store. This material will allow you to get irregular shapes that could be almost impossible to make with a mold of other materials. We are going to build a leather vase (although this method is useful for many other shapes/purposes!) which will also be hardened, thanks to the sand and will have the consistency of other materials such as wood or even ceramics. We will also get to know other materials that we all have at home that can also be used to make this type of molding.

Motorcycle Tank BibArmin Dobstetter

You will build a stiff and functional motorcycle tank bib with an old design of Ken Griffin’s. First, you will learn the construction and fitting of a tank bib for various motorcycle models. After cutting the leathers for the top and bottom and doing the stitching line, you will trace the design on the top leather, do the floral carving and learn a new, easier way of embossing the lady. The coloring will be block-cut coloring, antique coloring and shading with airbrush technique. After drying and gluing all single pieces together, and after sewing, you will bevel the leather lace before lacing the edges with a special double loop. The costs include all necessary materials.

This pictorial workshop will explain, demonstrate, and practice the techniques and procedure for creating a belt buckle frame that can fit any belt size or buckle design. We will be carving an American Southwestern scene, with real turquoise, on a custom belt buckle. This will include the techniques on how to carve, emboss, color and assemble this project. Braces, suspenders, pant hangers...In this workshop, we’ll be making a set of leather braces, or whatever you’d like to call them. Chris will cover fitting the customer, making an alignment jig, and the assembly of your braces.

Smart Phone CaseAkiko Okada

Akiko will teach the techniques to construct a beautiful, 5-card pocket phone case, carved in the Sheridan style. This case will fit any smartphone/iPhone. You will attach a slider (provided by Akiko) on the case to make it easy to take pictures with your phone, eliminating the need to cut a hole in the case for the lens. Akiko will explain the Sheridan style, show you how to carve her design, how to dye the background, oil it in, apply lacquer and antique.

Kathy Flanaganstarted her leathercraft career when she was very young with a 4-H project, not knowing what it would lead to many years later. She has become the recipient of prestigious awards, such as the coveted Al Stohlman Award and Master Leather Artisan of the Year from the Academy of Western Artists. Figure carving has become her primary focus, and she is determined to share everything she has learned.

INSTRUCTORSChris “Slickbald” Andreis a professional leather artist and maker in Longmont, Colorado. Chris works mostly in cowboy action and concealed carry gun leather while dabbling in saddles, cowboy trappings and motorcycle gear. Chris is also an active and competitive member of SASS and Cowboy Fast Draw, and is a lifetime competitive shooter. Chris authors a variety of instruction and pattern packs for gun leather and other items as well as offering workshops in holster making and carving and has traveled extensively in Europe, teaching workshops.

Aurélie Avesque-JouanAurélie Avesque-Jouan has been a western saddle maker since 2010. She was taught by Dale Moore in Belgrade, Montana, to build saddles that show concern for both the horse’s and rider’s well-being. She has also been making cinches since then, while keeping the same goal in mind: healthy tool and materials selection and respect for the horse. Since 2016, she has offered (through EQUIMOHAIR, based in France) mohair cords, yarn, hardware, and tools for cinch and tack makers with the goal of developing the awareness of the mohair tack market in Europe. She speaks French and English.

Robert Beardowns Pro Series Tool Company in Farmington, New Mexico, where he specializes in designing and crafting custom leather tools. He is a world-renowned carver, instructor and tool maker and has been a leather artist for over forty years. He was awarded the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 1987.

Michael Daleis an American expat living in Rhodes, Greece. After a 20 year career in law enforcement, a significant portion of which was spent as an instructor, Mike found a passion for leatherwork. Combining leatherwork and education was only natural, and in 2014, Mike founded www.learnleather.com. His mission is to bring quality, affordable leatherwork classes to everyone who wants them, on demand. And drink good coffee.

Armin Dobstetterstarted leatherwork during his 14 years at a local reenactment American Indian Club. With his first Harley-Davidson in 1980, he started to create useful things for his bike, then for the bikes of friends. In 1990, he started his business and today he is one of best leather artists in Europe for seats, saddlebags and various motorcycle gear, working not only on leather with his own designs, but also creating base plates and doing the upholstery. Akiko Okadahas taught three types of leathercraft classes in her city for 28 years, and a workshop in two leather companies in Tokyo every year for 7 years. She has taught in the United States, Australia, Taiwan, China and Germany. A regular visitor to Sheridan, she built a full-size and a 1/2-size saddle with Clint Fay in 2007 and 2008. She entered the World Leather Debut every year from 2005-2012, winning blue ribbons seven times. In 2013, she received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft, encouraging her to stay with leathercraft for life. She speaks Japanese and English.

Natalie Orfanidiis a Greek physical therapist/leatherworker living on the island of Rhodes. She began leatherwork in late 2013 in the area of archery gear. Since then, she has found a passion for many different styles of leather work, including historical reproductions, belts, wrist cuffs and other personal items. However, her greatest passion is comic and anime art. Natalie combines fine tooling ability and exquisite paint work to bring these characters to life. Bob Parkis a leather tooler and gear maker from Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A. He has developed a unique floral carving style in the western tradition, earning numerous awards at national shows and exhibitions. In 2015, he was awarded the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft. His book, Creating Western Floral Designs, is a highly acclaimed tutorial on western tooling patterns, distributed in over 40 countries. He also produces a variety of innovative products designed to improve and enhance leather working for novices and professionals alike.

Barry Kinghas made Sheridan, Wyoming, his lifelong home. From his first leather project as a third grader to an artist in his own right, Barry King has remained true to the Sheridan style of carving. Though the majority of his time is spent developing and perfecting tools to carve and stamp leather, Barry, the 1994 Ann Stohlman Youth Award recipient and owner of Barry King Tools in Sheridan, Wyoming, still finds time to put his own leather tools to work.

Jose (Pepe) Pereiradiscovered leathercraft 20 years ago. He was self-taught, but later took classes from local artisans. He’s been teaching leathercraft at the School of Arts and Crafts (EMAO) in Vigo, Spain, since 2009. Pepe is instrumental in conducting leather art exhibitions in Europe. He lives in Pontevedra, Spain.

Julie Piercehas been sewing by hand for as long as she can remember and on a machine since a 1970 home economics class. In the years since, Julie has made everything from bridal gowns to rodeo royalty wear. Julie first began making leather clothing in 2009, when she completed a leather jacket to wear at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Currently, Julie operates JJ Pierce Co. in Lewiston, Idaho, making bespoke leather garments.

Jürgen Volbachis a leatherworker from Cologne, Germany, who had his first lessons 30 years ago with the famous boot and saddelmaker, Don Atkinson in Kerrville/Ingram, Texas. He worked with leather every day, making leather designs and toolings and carvings for clients using old and new leather skills. In recent years, he has used modeling tools more and more in his leatherwork, especially with 3-dimensional pieces. Jürgen teaches many workshops in his work space in Cologne and other countries/towns to teach students the different techniques. He speaks German and English.

Gerda van der Stroombegan to work with leather in 1982, focusing on making useful and functional leather art. She does custom work such as designing wall decorations, saddlebags, saddles, cases, belts, jewelry and more, incorporating the individualism and uniqueness of the customer. Serge “Bigfoot” Volkenis the 2017 Al Stohlman Award Laureate. He has dedicated his entire adult life to leather, be it as a craftsman, instructor at vocational schools and design schools or a researcher in leather archaeology and explorer of techniques and applications of the craft. The quality of his teachings is based on a thoroughly researched basis and structured to be easily understandable. Danielle Roossienhas always been fascinated by leather. In 2010, she discovered the wonderful world of leather crafting and started working with leather, jumping in with “both feet”. She now has a studio in Arnhem, The Netherlands, where she enjoys giving workshops and making custom projects. She also travels quite a bit, giving demonstrations about the art of leather crafting. Danielle speaks Dutch, English and German, and has been instrumental in organizing this show with the Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal.

Isaac Romerowas born in Madrid, Spain in 1979, and began to play with leather at the age of 14. For about 8 years, he was self-taught. In 2003, he studied leather at the School of Arts and Crafts of Córdoba (Spain), learning techniques such as embossing, incisions, round bulge, guadamecil, and polychromies. In 2005, Isaac became a full-time leather craftsman, returning to his studies in 2013 to earn his Master in Leather Design with the Loewe Foundation.

Paul Zalesakis an award-winning artist who began tooling leather in 1974 under the tutelage of Jimmy Resley from El Paso, TX. His passion for finding a high-performance swivel knife led him to extensive research in the technology and science of metals and metal alloys. In 2006 he started Leather Wranglers Inc. and developed the SK-3 swivel knife. Paul was a college professor for more than 25 years. He authored “On the Edge”, a compilation of articles written for the Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal, about best sharpening practices.
